Does anyone have experience with how the Xi3's do crusing on the highway? Based on the treadwear warranty, I feel like they'd be one of the stiffer snow tires, almost comparable to a performance winter tire on dry roads.

Some Xi3 are H reated and some are T.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....odel=X-Ice+Xi3

I would expect better highway manners from H rated ones than T rated ones.

leaning towards the general Arctic's (non studded), but wondering if I should be looking at the x ice or the conti extremewinter contacts?

Anyone have experience with 2 or more of those chime in on ice performance?

Thanks
Ended up ordering the General's.

Tirerack is out for the season, but discount tire direct has them for $109 shipped (205/55/16) if anyone is still looking for them this year.

I have the Xi2's and they seem just fine cruising on the highway.
225/45R17, lowly T rated ones. Can't say about treadwear as they only have a couple thousand miles on them.

So my '13 WRX is being delivered in 2 weeks, a bit sooner than expected (not complaining though!). I thought that I had more time before delivery to pick out winter wheels, but I'm getting nervous about riding on summer tires since I drive to Ohio and Pennsylvania from MD every month.

I've looked at the tirerack.com packages and found some 16 inch X 7.5 wheels (+48 offset) here. Just wanted a sanity check before ordering, but that size would clear the brakes no problem right?

Also, any first hand accounts on how the treadlife is on the X-Ice Xi3 is compared to the Firestone Winterforce?

I suspect Xi3 are too new for such comparison.
I would not expect people who buy winterforces to cross shop studless Xi3 (or 2).

It is rather late in the season to have good selection of winter tires. You may need to buy what is available.

Just put 255/45/18's on the 2008 STI.

GREAT Fitment on stock suspension, little rubbing on Full Lock and heavy acceleration but love the aggressive look. IMHO STI's should have came with 45's instead of 40's

The only issue with this compared to a narrower tire is driving in deep snow. On packed snow and ice, he will be better off - more sipes per sq inch of contact. I run the stock sizes 245/40/18 and they are awesome. We've had over 200 inches so far this season and no issues at all here.

Huh/

First of all staying at stock size is definitely more optimal and what I was laughing about he put 255/45/18, then stated this is the size that Subaru should had put on for oem size while mentioning about the tires rubbing on the fender wells. If he had done his research that most people going to a 255 will put 255/35/18 to make sure the tires don't rub being a wider tire they will be also taller to begin with.

As for a wider tire u only gain traction in wet and dry conditions cuz the less weight displaced across the contact patch will give the tires less bite in compacted snow and ice.

Here is a picture of MY setup I just took, the above pictures are of a members ride with the same size tires on stock suspension

255/45/18's they only rub the inside of the fender well under hard acceleration or full lock a TAD bit. But not too much.

In short - they do rub - no manufacturer is going to put tires that do this on any vehicle.

Krzys

PS I find it amusing that you bought 255/45/18 and one of your concerns is wet traction. I bet they hydroplane worse than OE Dunlops.

I have the XI3 in 215/55/16 on my 2012 WRX.

I find them excellent for crusing the highway. Suprisingly quiet, excellent(improved) on centre feel, don't want to squirm around in groved/tractor trailer worn pavement. a bit squishy under cornering loads.

Above remarks are relative to stock Dunlops in 17" OEM configuration.

Cheers,

Nichi

They have also done very well in the snow we have gotten.
+1 The Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds are awesome - great grip even in the dry.

Very smooth on the highway commuting even at 80mph.

Wrecked my front end sliding in the snow on the stock hockey pucks. So I had Blizzak LM 60s installed yesterday.

You have no one to blame for that buy yourself. Why were you using summer tires in the snow?

finally got my front tire replaced (had a broken sidewall with a large blister) only to get told that there was a very small blister on the rear tire same side. its such a new tire that i should be ok to drive. its just annoying that i didn't notice it sooner i could've gotten an replacement for it too. now i gotta wait till next season to find a replacement. oh well. only need it to take me between boston and nyc then and now so i should be ok lol

Depending how much tread loss u have cuz don't forget being AWD having one taller tire than the rest can be hard on your center diff so keep this in mind.

Michelin X-Ice Xi3's are absolutely HORRIBLE in slush or anything close to slush. Steering felt exactly like driving in the snow with summer tires.

Rain, super cold temps, and snow, they are very nice though.

Just something I noticed.

ok. yea tread wear is pretty even. all tires are only weeks old. so tire wear should be balanced. just annoying i didn't notice it before.

lesson from all this is buy road hazard and be thorough in checking the wheels.

Ice tires tend to have tighter tread blocks than snow tires to compensate for the greater number of sipes. In some conditions, particularly at slower speeds, the smaller gaps between the tread blocks will clog up with snow and your tires become big snowballs. At faster speeds the snow/slush will the thrown out for effectively.

but that's the thing....
It's a studless snow & ice, not an ice tire.

They do awesome in the snow, and i have to actually try to break traction otherwise its just easy driving.....but when it gets slushy is when it gets sketchy.....like understeering and trying to turn but just going straight. Braking wasn't bad (that I noticed) but turning/steering was

Again this is only with slush, and they are still great tires. Also they are pretty good on gravel compared to the summers I had, and the all-seasons I had before them.
