Replacing Rear CV shaft rubber boots
I plan on replacing the CV shaft rubber boots on my Outback. I have downloaded the service manual and read through the instructions.
They outline the usage of a special Subaru tool that resembles a flat pry bar to separate the cv shaft from the rear diff. Is this tool absolutely necessary? Also, any special procedures, etc for removing the wheel end in order to begin pulling the cv shaft? I have basic tools, all sockets, breaker bar, etc., but I'm not sure if I will need an impact wrench of not for some of the bolts on the wheel end. I looked at the metal clips that are crimped on the rubber boots to seal and hold them in place. Would I need to get a special set of pliers or some some other tool to properly crimp the new ones? Thanks in advance for any insight, I'm trying to do all of my homework before I order the parts. Wes

You just need a really big flathead screwdriver or a prybar to pull the inner CV flange off the rear diff. I pulled mine like this when I replaced the
rear diff side seal . To tighten the boot clamp, you might want to check out a local auto parts store. Autozone has been great for me on my VW's AC compressor pulley repair. Here is a link to the loan-a-tool page for Autozone |

IMO don't even bother replacing the boot. Go to Autozone, Advanced, or whatever parts stores you have in your area and buy a remanufactured axle. They are $60 after you return the core. By the time you buy new boots, grease kits, have the axle torn apart, cleaned, and put back together, it's just not worth it. I got the boots and grease kits the first time I ever did this and it cost almost $40. If you spend $20 extra, you get a warranty. Well worth it.
http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37121 These are my instructions. It's basically the same thing between all Subarus. Note: When buying a reman'd axle, make sure you get one for ABS if your car has ABS. |

Oh, you are doing this with the rear axles...I just saw that. Replace the boots in that case. There are no remanufactured axles for the rear. New ones are over $400.

Rear REMFG half shaft assy As well as MWE Good call on pulling the assembly rather than picking away at the boot/joint. For the amount of hassle to take apart and reassemble, you will be much happier replacing the unit instead of wasting time with circlips and several pounds of grease. |

huh...when I worked at a Subie dealership we got reman'd front axles all the time. You can't beat the $55 pricetag. But they always told me that they didn't make reman'd rear axles for some reason. I never had to personally buy one so I don't have first hand experience.

I had a torn cv boot and just replaced the boot, grease and clips ($40 kit from subaru). I had been driving with it ripped for over a month (probably more!) and even in the snow. SUbaru and a few other mechanics said the axle was ruined, quoting $400+ qoutes. I ended up doing it with some friends and when we removed the axle to inspect it, it was fine.
It was about a year ago, but I do remember that its a PITA to clamp/band it back on the boot, but doable. My buddy has an extensive garage so we did it, having the banding tool would make it easy(cant rember exactly what we used). Hope this helps |
