OMGHi2U DDM Tuning HID Review

DDM HID 35w 5000k H11 slim ballast:

This kit lasted for 60,000 miles before one of the ballasts failed. I did NOT use a relay harness. My headlights are always on when I drive. The kit is probably around 2 years old and I don't remember having any issues with the order at the time.

I just ordered a replacement kit (35w 6000k H11 slim) today and I will update this thread with the results.

I can also vouch for ddm tuning hid kits. I have had a set in my previous car and I also have a set in my street bike currently. They are great products at a great price!

i agree totally. i did have some issues with the slim digital ones working with my car and had them sent to ddm. they told me nothing was wrong but they gladly swapped them out, for FREE, for a different set. great company and great products

I'm thinking about getting a set for my '07 WRX.

What kit would I need?

Thanks

I've used the DDM slim ballast kit on my previous car and my current car. On my old civic i had the 35w kit with no harness for about 3 years and it worked great and never had issues. I had it on there the entire time i owned the car and no failures. Now on the other hand i baught this same kit but in 55w on my WRX. Heres where it gets kinda interesting. I used the wiring harness for this one and ive had nothing but problems. One ballast would go out, so i'd swap them around from the left to right side. This would fix it for maybe a couple days then the same thing would happen again with. So i decided to remove the harness and see if it would work. and what do ya know, it did work! So far ive been running it for almost a year now and i've had NO issues at all. Mind you these are the same ballasts. Weird.

Overall all, for the money i approve of them and would recommend them.

Here you go!

http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DD...ast-35W-or-55W

You need to select the H7 bulb. i would recomend doing the 55watt option and the 6000K color. I think it has the best light output, super white with a wee little hint of blue.

PS you will need to disable your DRLs becuase with the HIDs your lights will be on ALL the time. Disabling the DRLs will stop this from happening. Theres a few threads on here about doing this. Its pretty easy.

Your bulb type for low beams is listed in your owner's manual. I would recommend a 35w kit; they are plenty bright and I never needed to turn on my high beams for adequate visibility; old people and country bumpkins will flash you plenty. For color I would not recommend going over 6000K because they start to get too blue and might make you a target for the police.

After 7 days my current order has not shipped yet. There is a shipping "ticker" on the front page, but it has not been updated in 6 days. The "ticker" apparently lets you know what range of order numbers are currently being processed, but if it ticks ever 6+ days I am not sure what use it is.

Fyi this is not an issue with the 08+ models because, I am assuming--the difference between years--, we have a seperate bulb specifically for DRL use other than the low beam.

DDM has stopped selling the $30 Apexcone/Raptor kits on their Web site. I ordered a Raptor kit on 2/12 and it was finally delivered yesterday. They sent two e-mails with updates. About two weeks ago, I e-mailed and left a VM with them asking to cancel my order so I could get the slim ballast version of my 35W 4500K H7 Kit. I never received a response to either. Upon checking the contents of the shipment yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was the slim ballasts that came, and not the thick Raptor ones. The slim ones will fit underneath the headlights to my Protege5 a lot better.

I haven't installed them yet. Will probably wait for a week or so to install so my other mods come in. But I will check this weekend that both ballasts work and that the bulbs are matching in color. I've read many reviews of the bulbs not matching color. Still...for $40 shipped, it's not a HUGE waste of money. I personally wouldn't get anything higher than the 5000K kit.

Also, I came across this in the morning. Don't know how factual it is, but someone spent time putting the pic/document together:

my retrosolutions Digital brand hid's have been good for a year now and are covered for life. Anything ever goes out, I get a replacement; plus Todd over at retrosolutions is a stand up guy.

I got an email this morning:

Alert: backorder ddm (Record Created)
Dear Valued DDM Tuning Customer:

Thank you very much for your recent order.

As you may have noticed from our website, we recently received the DDM Slim HID Kits. All orders with Overnight, 2day, or 3day shipping should be delivered within a week. The shipping times for all other orders is 2-3 weeks. We sincerely apologize for the delay in processing your order. We appreciate your patience and for your having chosen DDM Tuning.

Sincerely, DDM Tuning

So 8 days after I order and they finally shoot me an email telling me the product is back ordered. They also reference this information being available on the website; it isn't. There is no mention of a back order or I would not have purchased them here.

In regard to the images above: I am not mad about the colors being wrong except that I hope my "6000K" kit isn't too blue :\ What's with those "coil overs" anyway? At first glance I thought it was some kind of pneumatic pump for heavy machinery.

Oh, and lol at the fact that the crashed car is a bmw; I pictured a civic in my mind. People with german cars can usually afford proper equipment.

Re: bcware

I wonder if that's why I received the slim ballasts instead of the thicker Raptor ones that I ordered. They stopped getting the Raptor ones all together because it's no longer on the Web site. I thought maybe they would get one last batch in since when I ordered on 2/12 it was still advertised. Fine with me...paid $30 and got a $40 kit

DDM Tuning was primarily a vendor for BMW aftermarket. They evolved into a huge aftermarket universal HID company, but they still do sell BMW stuff. IIRC, the coilovers were found to be crappy Chinese stuff that wasn't tested fully and had huge failure rates.

You're right; it's been so long that I actually forgot they specialize in bmw parts. The lesson is clear though; don't buy cheap, untested parts for your car that are responsible for control or safety.

Oh, and apparently I misunderstood the last email DDM sent to me because my lights shipped yesterday via fedex; they are not on back-order; they were on back-order.

Photos and such when everything arrives; I will see if I can eyeball a color temperature. The last set of 5000K still work fine and the difference between 6000k and 7000k+ is usually easy to notice.

Installed my DDM Slim HID kit this past weekend. So far so good. I can't believe how small the ballasts are. The bulb color (they advertise 4500K) are indeed OEM-ish color. Both bulbs haven't flickered upon startup although one side is a teeny shade off from another. I'd say they're about a 95% match. Can't really tell unless you stare at them for a while.

Haha, staring into bulbs

I got my kit today and installed it in 5 minutes. Everything looks identical to my 2-year-old kit. The color is about what I would expect from 6000k. My opinion doesn't mean much, but I can say that they are not too blue; nothing beyond what is seen on certain cars with oem hids.

Installed in 5 minutes!!? WOW!!!

I definitely need to pick up a set but will have to get my buddy to install them for me since I'm not good with wiring/electrical stuff.

It's all plug-n-play. Should take no longer than 10 - 15 minutes tops. And most of that time is spent on routing the wires and the placement of the ballasts.

I have a set of the h11 35w 5k HIDs. I hooked up the drivers side first and went to turn them on to see the difference from the stock halogens and the HID didn't turn on? Any help with this? Do both need to be installed to work? Help me troubleshoot fellas.

Try flipping the plug around on the ballast.
