It would not surprise me if this is the reason manufacturers use softer bushings in the first place--noise reduction.
Put the car up on ramps today and inspected the shift linkages and bushings and everything seemed to be nice and tight, nothing loose to have been causing the extra noise/vibration.
So based on the stiffer bushing theory, I switched both front and rear bushings from the stiffer KB ones back to the stock ones and the extra noise/vibration went away!
I guess something had to be sacrified, either notchy shifting or quieter ride. I chose the latter since this is my daily. Lol

I would never go back to Auto myself. I've been driving an '04 WRX 5spd Maual for 2 years now. I just love it.

I've only had my Sport Premium 2 days but so far I'm really liking it. It is way more fun to drive than the F-150 (4x4 extended cab and long box) that I am coming from. I've not noticed any issues with shifting into reverse yet, but that could be because I keep thinking it's left and up instead of right and down (must be muscle memory from when I drove my ex-wife's 5spd Jetta). All in all the manual transmission is a lot of fun.

My only "complaint" is that the clutch is so incredibly light. And the 4000 rpm limit for the first 1000 miles. Every time I get close to that I can almost hear the engine saying "more...more..." At mile 1000.1 it's going to be like getting a huge free HP increase.

Wait until you install a short shifter. That makes it really fun

That is what I've heard. I think I will adding the 19mm rear anti-roll bar too.

Yes, I performed both of these mods within the last month myself. I went with the COBB short shifter because of its adjustability options (both throw and height). I did not replace any of the bushings beneath the car.

I did the perrin short shift adaptor because cost, ease of installation, and the stock height of the shifter was fine with me. I didnt install the bushings either.

Has anyone noticed that their trans rattles a bit when cold? When I start mine in the garage it rattles in neutral until the clutch is pushed in stopping the rotation of the main shaft. After its warm the noise goes away. I am getting ready to change to synthetic fluids but I want to make sure that this is normal. If it isn't I don't want them to try and blame the Redline fluid for a failure.

Paul
Mine doesn't do that either. At startup what I hear sounds like the flywheel scraping. It bothered me at first, but it didn't seem to hurt anything. I heard the same thing (but not as loud) on the CVT Impreza.

Maybe the clutch engage point was too low and needed adjustment?

High catch point? Not on mine. I rejected the Mazda3 due to it's high catch point. My catch point is only about an inch and a half off the floor.

Now you guys have me wondering if the clutch adjustment is being set inconsistently at the factory.

You're the first person on this forum who hasn't agreed that the clutch's catch point is high.

At least it's not super long.

The point isn't unusually high, I like it. I just wish there was more of a change in resistance around the catch point, like a compound bow.

Every car has a different clutch/transmission feel. If you mainly drive one car, like me, you get used to it and it really is not something I think about.

There is nothing wrong with the 5 speed transmission, 'except' the fluid and the length of the shifter throw (cures, Amsoil Severe Gear and a short shift adapter).
