Default 05 LGT oil light-opinions?

Soo heres the story bought this 05 LGT 100k miles small oil leak coming from timing cover havnt cracked it open to see wheres its coming. After driving for an hour and getting car up to temp after coming to an idle the oil light starts lightly flickering u until i tap the gas a little. Prior owner installed killer b pickup tube hoping that was problem and that didnt fix it ( he told me it was fixed) unfortunatly i test drove it from cold start at wasnt an hour test drive... So whats my best option for finding out what has failed and if the block is even gonna be worth doin a new timing belt and all that

A new oil pickup won't fix anything leaking from behind the timing covers. You're looking at a bad front main seal or intake/exhaust cam seal and/or a PCV issue

As far as the flickering light is concerned, it could be a faulty sensor but since you're obviously leaking oil I'd run the he1l outside and check the dipstick immediately.

In my opinion, the best way to tell the general 'health' of the motor is a series of data logs and a compression & leak down test. If you don't have a means of logging data, do a compression & leak down test - this will tell you quite a bit. If it fails you're looking at some $,$$$ because it means you're rings and or bores are worn out

Actually, replacing the pickup b/c the light flickers makes a bit of sense. If the OEM tube was cracked it would pull in air and therefore have low pressure. Unfortunately this didn't seem to fix the problem though

Yeah also has new oil control valves. But ya i check oil frequently 5w30 royal purple i assume oil from timing cover is from cam seals or something ( was gonna have timing done soon anyway) but just wanna make sure motor is good before i put all the money in for everything in timing cover including oil pump. Just would like to know if there is anything between oil pickup and oil pressure sensor besides pump that could be the cause of the low pressure. Im going to change oil pressure sensor too. What sucks is is has replacement motor and tranny with who knows how many miles from who knows how many owners ago. It barley flickers at idle at 650 or 700rpm i feel like if i turned idle up to 850 it wouldnt even happen altho i feel like thats just hiding the problem

Also curious i contacted my local subaru specialist and talked to him he said low oil pressure could be result of rod bearings going out or main bearings. Just curious how those bearings would effect the oil pump isnt it driven off the timing belt or would metal particals possible jam up the oil pump so much where its blocking oil flow?

The bearings don't affect the pump - there could be shavings, however the particle size is so stinkin small the impact on the pump would be negligible. The pump is keyed to the main crankshaft so if it binds the crank will force it to spin regardless and it will fail catastrophically, or your crank will bind along with it which I imagine is unlikely.

I seem to recall that most of us Legacy GT guy's don't recommend that oil for our cars.

Shell Rotella t6 is very common.

The oil light will flicker at very low oil pressure, most say to low and to late, the damage is all ready done.

Not to take away from this forum, but www.legacyGT.com is where you want to be with one of these cars. Everything you need to know about the car is there.

What's the build date on your car ? Seems late 2005's and early to mid 2006's had cracking oil pick up tubes.

My May 2004 build date wagon is still running the stock oil pick tube.

It has a brand new killer b pickup! Now instead of light flickering at idle it just comes on for a second when it drops down to idle from driving and goes away immidiatly any chance i have a faulty oil pressure sensor?

Confirm oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. The light doesn't come on until oil pressure is at 2-3psi, which is way too low.

I would replace whatever needs to be fixed. I had a similar issue on my Neon SRT4 and I had thought it was the sensor since it seemed common on the forums especially with 130,000 miles, but it turned out to be an oil pump failing. While just cruising on the highway, the oil light came on for a second or 2 but even just cruising it was too late, engine was starved for oil and spun a rod bearing. Needed a new crank, piston, all new rings, bearings, oil pump, and I just replaced everything I could afford to at the time, luckily I got a discount from Dodge and my friend who just got out mechanic school did all the work and I spent around $1,500 incl. labor.
