Default programming key fob

I must be a retard. I have tried b4 to programme a key fob for my Impreza as per the owner's manual (02 WRX) with no luck. My salesman did it and made it look like child's play! That was a few yrs ago. Tried again today with a new fob and again, I don't seem to be able to do this! instructions are:
unlock with existing fob to disarm security. open door, sit down, close door. cycle ignition key 10 times between on and lock, stopping at lock, within 15 seconds. horn will beep once to indicate programming mode. open and close door within 45 sec of starting procedure, then press any button an new fob. horn will beep twice.

Doesn't look like rocket science, but no horn beeps happen, and no new working fob. Now I am a reasonably educated person who has done some pretty technical things and have been reading since grade 1, which was 50 years ago. I am embarrassed to say I can't do this even after numerous attempts. Anyone on here with experience have a clue about this?? I hate to go back to the salesman (great guy btw)and ask him to bail me out again.

the hardest part is the 10 cycles in such a short time

and you start from the on position, correct? that's the way i read it. i have tried it both ways, didn't work either way. pretty sure i was under 15 sec, but maybe i need a stopwatch too. btw, this seems like a ridiculous procedure imo.

Did you finish the whole procedure within 45 seconds of starting? That's how I read that. 45 seconds is not very long. Maybe you're just not doing it fast enough.

What if you don't have the old remote for the keyless entry? Is there any way you can disable that box (i.e. disconnect it, start car, shut down, reconnect), then start from scratch? When I bought the car, it just had a plain-old key, but recently checking under the dash there is a box labeled Subaru keyless Entry that seems to be plugged in...

per my comment above, the procedure is ridiculous and what's with the 45sec time constraint-could make it 2 minutes maybe?

Default did it!!

Subie Gal was right. You have to try this several times, eventually it comes together. doing it in the daylight might have helped

Subaru doesn't do anything simple. Otherwise, there would be a keyhole in my trunk.
