thought it was the timing belt, what can it be???
i have a 98 legacy outback with 83000 miles and it s a 5speed.
i bought the car 4 months ago with 75000 miles. at that time it had no oil leaks or problems. since then the valve cover gaskets are leaking and prob the rear main seal. so this morning i go out to start the car that has been sitting outside overnight in 40 degree weather. i try to start the car and it sounds like the timing belt slips or skips. it did not sound like a dead battery since there was a decent amount of juice. i did not think that it was a starter since after a while it started but was rougher than normal. i automatically think its a timing belt since there was that constant whirling noise. i figured well, maybe i got oil on the belt or some other parts and it slipped, so i didnt drive it. i get home and take apart the belt cover and compare the lines with endwrench.com's page. everything looks fine, but since it's apart i may just change the belt myself. there is no oil at all coming from the front of the motor and the timing looks fine. is it possible somehow the timing just got loose and messed up and is making it run rough? i noticed that the passenger side of the coil pack has some discoloration on the copper end. so i just sanded it clean. i changed the fuel filter a couple months ago also. is it just the timing that may be off? or do i have other problems

It sounds like it was just a rough start. Hows your air filter and spark plugs? How old it the battery?

I suppose it's possible that it skipped but you said that you checked it and it was fine. You can't set timing on it. The whirling noise you described, does it go away when the car warms up?

harmonic balancer maybe. if it picks up crank signal 180 off, it'll run, just all messed up like a timing issue. i actually have this problem right now on my impreza outback 2.2. your 2.5 is different tho, so im not sure if it's possible on yours. but it'll stumble, then be ok, then stumble again. if i gas it hard it stumbles, if i decel hard it'll stumble, but drive smooth and stay on the gas it's ok. it's really weird. if you want to read my post in this forum to match symptoms be my guest!

well, i put it all back together and started it up and ran a few miles to get it warmed up, and no problems.
now i am used to asian cars and their quirks. maybe it's just a starter or cold start sensor or something bazaar. i will keep everyone updated. these crazy subarus |
