Sweet 4-series. So much better than a 3-series. I'm going to have to buy special M-sunglasses and M-gel for my hair when I drive it.

Sweet... but calling it a "4" will take some getting used to.

Except for the diesel part.

I don't like this 4 series nonsense one bit. What was wrong with 1, 3, 5, and 7? No one liked 6 series anyway.

I don't understand BMW's naming strategy anymore.

Yea. THAT will be hard to get used to.

I think when Mercedes Benz made the CLS and called it a 4-door coupe, it set off this German snowball of model redundancy and ridiculousness that BMW has been late to embrace. Though they did seem to go the "Gran Turismo" hatchback route with little provocation... what a nightmare those are.

Default BMW 4-series Coupe Concept to Debut at Detroit Auto Show

Before we begin this article, we’d like to point out one thing. Word on the street (for quite some time) has been that BMW plans on changing its nomenclature for the next 3-Series Coupe and will call it the 4-Series.
While many media outlets admit that BMW has never confirmed such a move, we’ve asked BMW on numerous occasions if that was what the company was planning. The answer we always received was that the 3-Series badge is so important to the company and that giving the next-generation of the coupe the 4-Series badge has never been discussed.
Either way, new reports suggest that the next-generation BMW 3-Series Coupe will make it world debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January.
The model will make its debut in concept form at the show and will enter production later that year.

Quote:
The current-generation BMW 3-series sedan has been out for a year, and the 3-series Sports Wagon already is on sale in Europe and will hit U.S. showrooms next spring. What’s missing? The coupe, of course. After all, the 3-series started out as a two-door in 1975—a four-door wasn’t offered until 1982, when the second-generation arrived. The wait for the F30-generation 3-series coupe is coming to an end, however. At January’s Detroit auto show, BMW will unveil a 3-series–based two-door concept, previewing the next-gen 3-series coupe. However, we’re hearing from European sources that the Bavarians finally will change their nomenclature and call this car the 4-series, although BMW hasn’t confirmed that.

Not only will the 4-series coupe be previewed by the concept, but the next-gen 4-series convertible will take styling cues from the concept, as well. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. market is very important for both variants. Technical details are scarce at the moment, but don’t expect major changes from the F30 sedan’s turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and turbo 3.0-liter straight-six. And as far as the M4—are we the only ones struggling to come to terms with this moniker?—be prepared for a return to six cylinders, albeit boosted. Expect further details on the 4-series concept closer to the start of the 2013 Detroit auto show, which kicks off January14.

Official: BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept (F32) Revealed!

Quote:
Munich. BMW presents the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe.

The latest generation of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible leads the way worldwide in the premium mid-range coupe and convertible market. Indeed few, if any, rivals have made such a defining impact on this segment in terms of design, dynamics and efficiency.

Now, with the unveiling of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe, BMW is looking ahead to the fourth generation of its sporty mid-range coupe - and reasserting its global leadership credentials in the process.

The "4" - a sign of greater exclusivity and presence.
The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe adds a new dimension to the qualities of the BMW 3 Series Coupe in terms of aesthetics, dynamics and elegance. The "4" doesn't just mark the start of a new cycle, it represents the zenith of a development curve. BMW has given the new model its own individual character and a standalone design - and, in so doing, has turned "4" into segment shorthand for aesthetic and dynamic appeal. The latest addition to a nomenclature that sees BMW building on the fine tradition of its large BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series Coupes, the "4" stands for greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation from the BMW 3 Series range.

The design: a development curve reaches its zenith.
The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe allows the driver to experience the essence of this new, sporting and elegant generation of car in the lap of contemporary luxury. An array of high-quality details provide an exclusive showcase for the car's perfectly balanced coupe proportions. Inside, the expertise of BMW Individual, skilled handcraftsmanship and carefully selected materials combine to create a supreme interior. The role of BMW Individual in the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe's development clearly underlines the brand's commitment to challenging itself constantly in pursuit of perfection.

Lower and wider stance sharpens dynamics before a wheel is turned.
The dimensions of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe imbue the car with a dynamic presence even when it is standing still. The wheelbase (2,810 mm) is 50 millimetres longer than that of the existing 3 Series Coupe, while 45 mm has been added to the front track (1,545 mm) and 80 mm to the rear track (1,593 mm). At 1,826 mm wide, the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe is 44 mm broader than its predecessor, its roof line is 16 mm lower (1,362 mm) and it is also longer (4,641 mm) - all of which makes for exceptionally dynamic proportions.
The article is pretty long, so I only pasted the first part.

Look how far out of his seat the driver needs to get to see where he is.

Default BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept Photos Leaked

Quote:
Providing the very first look at what the new 4 Series will look like, photos of the car as a thinly veiled concept have leaked. The pictures are also the first confirmation that from now on BMW’s 3 Series Coupe will wear the 4 Series badge.

While similar in style to the 3 Series sedan, this concept model sports more aggressive body work, including dramatic sculpting on the front bumper that works with the more pointed front grille. Also notable are the gills on the fenders, while it’s easy to see that style elements have been adapted from the 6 Series.

The series of leaked photos also provides a first look at the car’s interior, which shares cues with the 3 Series, though is expected to get a 2+2 seating layout.

Few surprises are expected under the hood, with both a 428i model and 335i model planned, with the former delivering 240 hp from a 2.o-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, while the latter will make 300 hp from a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six.

The 4 Series Coupe Concept is expected to make its official world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show on January 14th.

Yeah, I wonder who doesn't get a cringe when reading a marketing BS like that. Who is it really for? What idiot would read that press release and go "oh yeah, now that the number is one larger, it IS more exclusive! I want one now!".

What they really meant was of course 1. name it '4xx', 2. increase the starting price to $45K, 3. exclusivity!

Exactly. They're doing the same with the 1-series coupe/convertible. The next generation 1-series coupe/convertible is going to be known as the 2-series and they'll charge more for it.

I couldn't disagree more. Looks better than I ever would have thought given the stinging blandness of the last generation and the mules that have been spotted.

I'm not too worried about the naming convention because who cares. It's just the GT hatches and actual physically weird ass stuff they're coming out with that bother me. This will be a stunner in person. The sedan already makes me drool.
