Formula 1 - 2013 v2.0
This time with less poll!
Test one has been completed at Jerez and the teams now move to Circuit de Catalunya for three consecutive tests to finalize their preparations for the first practice in Australia only 28 days from now. Who looks good? RBR: Pretty much flawless. Anyone surprised? Mclaren: experienced a fuel pump failure early in Jerez, which is the third since Monza last year (Monza, Abu Dhabi, Jerez) Ferrari: Their statements indicate they're much happier with the car than this point last year, and Felipe Massa set an excellent time that stayed near the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of the first test. Lotus: The car looks fast and reliable, and Kimi appears happy. Thirty percent of NASIOC Motorsports voters thought he'd be the surprise of the season. they may be right... Mercedes: Their test started poorly with an electrical loom problem on the first day and Hamilton's brake failure on the second day. The team recovered to rack up a ton of laps for each driver the final two days, but Mika Hakkinen feels the Merc is off the pace, despite the knowledge that they were using last year's front wing. Noticable heat discoloration could be seen on the sidepods of their car adjacent to the exhaust. Sauber: Their car looks excellent with its narrow sidepods and dark grey livery, and Team Principle Monisha Kaltenborn has high expectations. Williams: Chose to run last year's car to get to grips with the tire changes. Will introduce their new car before the tests in Catalunya start. STR: Going well. Caterham: Lighter green on the car this year and promising realistic expectations after finishing 10th again in the constructor's championship. Marussia: Running a pair of rookie drivers after Timo Glock's departure. They struggled with electrical issues the first day of testing, but accomplished a decent program. Bring on the development parts! |

the surprise would be if kimi did not do well this season. i don't think 30% of voters understood the poll question, but that's just me

Agreed. Even though I voted for him because...iceman. The surprise was more last season's performance after being out for years. As for this season even if he wins the WDC I wouldn't say it would be a huge surprise given that he is consistently mentioned in the top 4 drivers (Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Kimi). If Lotus gives him a car to qualify with he could be tough to beat.

my favorite driver is button, but i voted for hamilton because i think he will do great things with a subpar merc. much like alonso did more toward the beginning of last year with the ferrari.

My favorite drivers are Perez and Alonso but I can see Hamilton winning 2 or more races.

I really don't like that they test so much at a circuit that hosts a GP.

Why should they not test there?

They test at a track that they know the exact set-up for the track and have the most data for it so when they take an unknown car with unknown updates, they can see exactly what needs to be done.

I would normally agree with you, but the last couple years the team that was fastest in testing was not necessarily the fastest during the Spanish GP (with the main exception being 2011 when Seb won everything). The best example was last year. Because the race is later in the season teams tend to find speed they didn't have during testing.
Catalunya was a boon for my photography, since so many cars were running flo-vis. I got to see lots of development parts being tested. I even got back-to-back shots of the Mclaren low nose vs. high nose upgrade. It's a great track for the fans as well...lots of parking, cheap tickets, great facilities, an outstanding main grandstand. About the only thing it lacks is really exciting racing. |

its the damn chicane (14,15) that really ruins any chance one might have at a run on the front straight.

Super excited about this season. I hope it is again another close battle all year. I would love to see Webber win WDC but really doubt it.
Just hope Vet doesnt win again... |
