I just went wit the assumption of 175lb weight and 50lbs per person for luggage/gear. Could definitely be less. I have not seen GVWR for XV but assume it would be higher than Impreza?

I guess the other issue is whether one could tow two snowmobiles with a trailer in addition to the above at elevation. My guess is the XV might not be the best choice for that.

Snowmobiles are like ~500 pound each when dry. You would need an extremely light trailer/tools/extra fuel setup to haul two of them without exceeding the 1500 pound tow limit. Aside from adding all that extra weight, you would be adding a tremendous amount of aerodynamic drag as well. I wouldn't even try it at sea level if hills were involved.

how many of you have actually driven an impreza? One of the most common things people say is that "wow this only has 148 hp?" The crosstrek has a slightly higher curb weight, but the gearing in the transmission has been changed to accommodate.

While i haven't driven it personally, the Subie rep I spoke to has driven it all over the country, and three of the other salesman at my dealership got to drive it pretty extensively, NOBODY complained that it had too little power for daily driving.

Yes Im sure we would all like another 30-40 hp (BRZ anyone? anyone? Bueller?), but most of the people that buy Subarus, want a safe, reliable car, that is awd and gets good gas mileage and that is affordable.

Given that the vast majority of Crosstreks will ship with a CVT, changing the gearing does little unless you are on the extreme ends of the ratio spread.

It just always amazes me how little weight over 4 adults you can have, considering it is advertized as a 5 person vehicle.

Do you honestly think that people who's job it is, to sell whatever Subaru builds, are going to hammer on a new product that is getting a push into the market?

And also... one person alone in a car is different than several people, or cargo... or an emergency maneuver.... things become more evident about how much capability a car has.

And part of that, is the ability to get up and MOVE instantaneously when the situation demands it, even when loaded near it's max rating, not just when empty and driven by a 110lb driver.

No the guy that just dropped +$23k is going to regret his purchase.

This XV might be a good option for a customer that lives in an urban setting. But I am skeptical it will meet the needs for someone with an active lifestyle. Otherwise it would have come with the diesel or the new 2.0DIT.

Why does he want two more then? He's coming from a diesel Ram and isn't complaining of the power if anything he's saying the XV has surprising getup for its power ratings. I live a fairly active lifestyle and think it would suit me just fine. Actually contemplating selling my Saabaru to get one. Would I prefer the diesel with a 6-speed manual yes but the likelihood of us ever getting that is slim to none. A premium with the manual would be just fine for what I need.

Anyone contemplating purchasing three of the same vehicle is in a bit of a different demographic than a lot of people who need one affordable vehicle to "do it all". Fact is if the XVs let him down, he could simply just buy something else without a problem. Right now he seems to be in fanboy mode, but glad he likes the car

Also he says the car "stops faster than any car he has ever had" which is probably true when you are comparing it to a Dodge Ram Diesel...

In the late 90s I knew someone that bought five Ford Escort Wagons for their family business (a karate training and outdoor learning place). They were all different colors, everyone with a license got one. The master plan was to simply maintenance by having identical cars, and have people drive whichever cars had the lowest mileage to balance out the odometers. That didn't work out well for them, turns out Ford Escorts were not very good cars

Riiight because we're (salesperson to salesperson) going to lie to one another...

dude, hate all you want, we (my family) are coming from a 122 hp kia soul (2700 lbs) and going to 148 hp crosstrek (3200 lbs) - pretty equal comparison - the only gripe we have on the soul is that it needs a taller 5th gear (new ones have a 6th). - we didnt buy the car to race and haul boats or trailers

the car has 30k miles on it, and has been loaded and taken on family trips.

we are getting the crosstrek, because my wife loves the impreza 5 door, but she just wanted a higher ride for shopping and child seats...

for that price, we are getting alot of car for the $

Im sure if the crosstrek is as successful as i think it will be, im sure we will see different trim levels and engines ala Forrester and Outback, but for now, this little beast will surprise ALOT of people

You have a higher level of expectation of adequate power than 20 years ago, or the rest of the world currently. My friend's early 90's nissan sentra in college could barely get up a small grade hill with 4 college aged adults riding in it. You literally had it stomped to the floor and it would go slower and slower as you reached the top of the hill needed to get to the dorms. Many cars of that era were like that.

Also i spent some time in europe last year and drove plenty of diesel econo cars. I was able to merge with a 5 speed manual just fine, though it was really sluggish with the pedal to the floor. However, the on ramps were plenty long enough to get up to highway speed. I even drove a fiat punto on the autobahn in germany. It had 3 guys in it and was plenty "slow", be it was still a blast even though it maxed out at about 150kmh(90mph).

There's a reason why america is only 5% of the worlds population, yet we consume over 50% of the worlds resources, namely oil. For some reason america's level of acceptance has shifted to believing that the car needs to get up and haul ass instead of just get up and go when you step on the pedal. The situations where you need to use the accelerator in an "oh crap" maneuver are quite rare. Most of the time you simply just need to veer off in a different direction or use the brakes to save yourself. I've been driving with slow and sluggish cars for many years, never a problem. Drive a big rig, a dump truck, or tow a huge RV and tell me you need to accelerate at mach 1 or a car is total crap.

You drive a 2008 Impreza which has quite a power advantage over the current car, especially when loaded down. The new car is more zippy for city driving, but has problems on the highway and higher elevations. So if you think your car is slow and sluggish now, the new one is even worse for highway cruising.

That is like saying you don't need a car with AWD because there are many drivers that do just fine with FWD.

I never said my current car was slow or sluggish, it has way more power than i need. I said i've driven them for years, particularly when i travel overseas for weeks on end. Also other cars that i've owned in the past. I had a 1.8L 97 impreza brighton for example. It had 115hp. Before that i had an 89 jetta with 105hp and a 3 speed auto. Yes, it was slow!!

In fact i think subaru power to weight ratio's are simply scaling back to level's they were at in america 15 years ago. Many car companies will start doing this as EPA regulation push them towards better corporate fuel economy ratings. It's just that with the CVT, you get slightly better ratio's than you could with a 5 speed manual so you might get a little better acceleration but that will only get you so far.

Rightfully so. AWD is a preference, not a necessity. Engine power above a certain adequate level is also a preference, not a necessity.

I drove through snow in FWD cars before and never got stuck. I did have trouble with a hill in which i had to go around, but i made it home. If i lived more north than i would think AWD is a must, but i live in PA and we get harsh snow like 5 days out of the year on average. The rest of the days the snow is fully plowed and RWD cars do fine so that doesn't count. So no, AWD isn't needed, but it's preferred by me.

And i wouldn't say "MANY" drivers do just fine with FWD, i would say "MOST" drivers do just fine. Fact is, a large percentage of people around here all have FWD, if i were to guess i'd say 90% of drivers in a 200 mile radius drive FWD cars. We are excluding trucks and large SUV's, only talking about economy class. Trucks and SUV's are rarely ordered in 2WD and usually specifically bought for towing or work when purchased in 2WD. Many drivers drive their trucks in 2WD in snow unless they get stuck or the snow is deep. If it's plowed and there's a mix of snow and pavement, it'll be in 2WD mode.

There are always exceptions. My salesperson is always keen to point out what has been added, what has been taken away (i.e. number of "steps" on wiper intervals and seat heaters), and what would be nice to have that isn't offered. One of the many reasons he earns my repeat business.

I tried to do that too (with an Impreza)... Balck interior with a white exterior is pretty standard, I've had three previous white cars with dark interiors. I ended up with Marine Blue Pearl to get a black interior.

Now for 2013 models Marine Blue Pearl only comes with a white interior

I agree. Not enough good color choices with the black interior. I ended up with safe silver as I'm a tad too old for tangerine. Sigh.

Apparently the dealership where JustyWRC works had a 2013 Outback in white with black interior. I almost flew down to buy it just for the rarity.

It still floors me that Subaru, a company known for being rugged and outdoorsy, would allow anything lighter than tan for their interiors. I know lighter helps make the inside look more spacious, but come on! It just looks tacky to me.

The 2012 Impreza loaner I had only stayed clean for about 1 day. Then my buddy just lightly touched the seat and door handle and it was over. Before that moment I thought, "Maybe I could live with an ivory interior?" Then reality rushed in. No ivory for Chano.
