Yea i was burning 1 litre of oil in every 1000 km...about 620 miles.

I went through similar situation with VW, and if you really complain I think they will replace your car. Nobody is going to want to buy a car with a replacement engine.. Just my opinion. Good Luck either way
It was quite the struggle to get them to just do this. I dont plan on selling the car anytime soon, so I dont think that is the best route for me. I have already driven 34000 km in the 6 months I have had the car so Im not sure of the depreciation value of it anyway. Im just happy they have decided to do something about the problem, and once this is taken care of, I hope I can stop visiting Subaru every 1-2 weeks to get my oil levels checked and filled.

For precedent when there was an issue with forester engines a couple of years ago, that came from the factory with misbored valve guides, the recall fix was to rebuild the heads.

There is no way they will replace the engine, much less the entire car, when they can more cheaply fix the issue.

Of course first they need to admit it is a recall issue and figure out why some cars are consuming oil so they can implement a fix.

So if you have a car consuming oil, keep it filled so the rest of your engine is ok if they come through and replace the compression rings or whatever they determine needs to be fixed.
Actually they did say they are going to replace my engine...well I should correct myself, the service manager said they have ordered me a short block and will call me when it has arrived to be replaced. So not the full engine, but still something.

Do you really think that people will take the engine serial number and run it through the computer?
Yes you are correct. My car met the standards and then some. It was burning 1 liter of oil in less than 1000km (620 miles) They have ordered me a new short block.

I'm not at all saying that a new car isn't prefferable, only that after a year of empty promises, and a total dismissal of the issue at the corporate and dealer levels, any fix would be better than another year of the same.
I bought a NEW car to avoid these issues of constant maintenance. My 98 GMC is holding up way better than this car, and I LOATHE GM PRODUCTS.

That engine replacement in Canada wasn't the only one there, iirc. And there's a woman in cali who got a new engine. That's on a long thread about oil consumption on Edmunds.
More than one or two have been replaced!
I'm not sure if this had anything to do with it, or works the same way in the states but I purchased my car from Subaru of Mississauga that directly deals with Subaru of Canada. I was told that the other Subaru dealerships were just franchised from the main Subaru (Subaru of Canada headquarters are directly across the street from the dealership I purchased my car.)
So what im trying to get at is that maybe because there was a direct connection with Subaru of Canada and my dealership that my problem was more hastily resolved than I thought it would be. Or actually even resolved.
And i'm not even saying my problem is resolved yet, but they have told me a new engine (short block anyway) is on its way and will call me when it has arrived.

I haven't gotten around to asking Subaru yet, but does anyone know how the warranty works now with a new engine? do I get a new 60k warranty on the replacement?

Well im back to this forum, which I was hoping to really really avoid. I had an oil consumption problem, got a new short block installed my car after waiting for it for over a month and a half...and after driving it for just over 3 weeks and 5500km I can say that my oil consumption problem is back!!! F!!!!!! I went to Subaru with the Oil light still on, they checked it and it was .6 of a liter low after 5500km of driving. They gave me the same old routine of "its normal for it to burn .6 in that amount of kms. Has anyone had their oil light come on during the break in period and then it never returned?

I believe there aren't any. There is something related but not to the extent of a lemon law.

This is why new engines are scary.... I'm starting to believe not even Subbie knows what the full problem is.

Hah maybe. They are giving me the same run around as before so either they don't know or they don't care.

Here's a question has anyone used any weight other than the recommended 0-20 full Synth ?

So far (touch wood) we have had very little oil loss from ours so far but in the first 2 dealer oil changes we've had I battled the Dealer who put in 10-30 Semi Synth against my wishes in the first, I made them drain it and insisted they only use 0-20 fully Synth as specified in the Manual. The motor runs brilliantly after its first 10k miles so will continue to insist they only use 0-20.

I second that!

It's sad, but not surprising that a company like Subaru would try to ignore and make light of this ****ty situation. I'll probably stay that way until it gets to a point where it affects sales and / or consumer confidence and ratings. They can blow off only so many complaining customers for so long. Hopefully, someday, it'll get to a point where enough customers complain, that Subaru will have to come out and admit there is a problem and issue a permanent fix. Until that day comes, we just have to keep pushing and pushing for a solution and try to be patient. OR, another option is to sell your car and never buy another Subaru product... I'm strongly considering this option.

VWs have way more problems than Subarus, and VW doesn't care. If VW can be a business success with lots of growth and not care, then Subaru certainly can.

I agree that those who are dissatisfied with your Subarus should sell them and not buy another one. This is exactly what I did with my TDI, and I've sworn to never buy a VW, Audi, Porsche, or any other VW product (which is too bad, because I really admire Audis). I think it's only fair for consumers to vote with their wallets.

My Forester burned oil from 24,000 miles to 30,000 miles. The pcv valve was replaced at the 30,000 mile service as party of the maintenance and its not used oil since. If the pcv valve us stuck open your vehicle will use oil. Have you had the pcv valve checked out?

They replaced the pcv valve in my first engine and it didn't do anything

They aren't ignoring the problem. If you do a consumption test and you meet the criteria you will get your engine fixed. I don't understand the confusion?

Yea your right. It's just annoying when you get a new engine installed in your new car and it has the same problem as it did the previous time. Then you have to go through the same bull S as last time to get the problem fixed. Back to Subaru every 2 weeks to hear that it's normal for your car to consume oil even though they just put a "brand new engine" in your car for the same exact problem your having now.
