txs RFL muffler is just a "l i t t l e" short....it fits fine...but is awefully close to rear bumper skin even with extended Kartboy hangers...It sits behind the bumper about 2 in...maybe some High temp tape will help...

I think Kartboy makes one specifically for the Forester now. KB- 001-XT

The console on the Forester is higher than the WRX/Impreza so the OEM shifters are about 2.5" longer on the OEM Forester levers than the Impreza. The KB shifter specifically for the Forester still has a short throw but the shift knob is only about 1/2 lower than stock. I'm guessing the KB shifter for the Impreza on a Forester sits pretty low. I just mention it because some people may not like it down that far but then again they may prefer it

Here is my install for the F-XT
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...&threadid=2198

And a pic:

As you can see it's not exactly all that high with the longer lever. Do you have a pic where the Impreza one sits? I'm curious.

Default Just to add to this...

I installed a Kartboy SS in my WRX the other day, took all of 15 minutes.
Yesterday I thought I would see if my WRX lever would fit the wife's FXT (before I read this post ). Holy Cow! It took me 20 minutes to get the bolt out! It's like working in a coffee can compared to the WRX.
I'm going to order a Kartboy Forester SS for her and get it done right.

I've been thinking really hard about getting a SS. My fear is that I willl not be able to install it myself. I know absolutely nothing about turning a wrench (dont even have a tool set). Is it really as easy as it's depicted? My B-Day is a month away, and would really like to get this.

Thumbs up

It is most likely the simplest mod you can do. And, as a bonus, I really don't think you can screw it up in any way.
I just ordered the Kartboy Forester-specific short shift from Kym at Aerosim Research. [email protected]
She has a batch on order and I think, other than Tom himself, is the only vendor that has the Forester SS.
Make sure you order the harder bushings too, they make a world of difference and are just as easy to install.

The only problem I had was getting the bolt out, and that was just an exercise in patience.

Not so Kastle actually was the first vendor other than KB (Tom & Mark) to carry the shifter. Direct link to KK for the KB FX-T SS:

Did the install this weekend. Hardest part was getting the damn shifter into the socket. I hit it with my palm on the shift knob and a hammer on a piece of wood. It would not go in. The stock shifter would go in and out easily. I ended up taking a dremel and slightly grinding down the ball. Still had to bang the heck out of it to get it in. I haven't done the bushings yet, but like the shorter throws of the shifter. The shifter itself takes some of the rubbery feel out of the linkage.

I did have trouble getting my SS ball in too (on my wrx install), until I figured out that I needed to firmly hold the SS's ball against the nylon socket while I smacked it with the mallet. Popped right in.
Before it was just bouncing back up off of the socket.

A lot of the problems with getting the shifter in the socket is people are reluctant (and I can see why) to give it a really good firm hit to pop it in. I use a plastic dead blow hammer and after much practice (I've done a few dozen) it can be done in one shot. The first few times I installed them I had a heck of a time thinking I would snap something. Having the shifter at the proper angle helps a lot too. I describe this in the install page I did.

The width of the spot the bolt goes through is the same so yes for that part it's the same but the lever is much shorter for the Impreza putting the shift knob pretty low. This is why I worked w/ KB to get something that wasn't way down in the console.

I wasn't worried about the good whack, I just didn't have a big enuff FH Maybe since I've only got 500 miles on the car it hasn't loosened up enough. I almost gave up since the stock shifter went back in so easily. Oh well, it's in now and my palm and other hand are nice an bruised. I missed with a couple whacks .

"FH"

I smacked the snot out of it the first few times and, like I mentioned, it just bounced up and out. Push down with the hand that is holding the lever, like you are trying to push it in, and then whack it.... the lever that is.

so i can put that abandoned unused incorrectly ordered 98-01 RS shifter to use after all

i recall doing it on my impreza and it would not go in any which way, even with a rubber mallet. then, when i started futzing around with the positioning, it just slid in with a gentle but forceful push with bare hands. its all about the angle of attack i reckon...

I've installed one of those before, they are nice too. Lots of adjustability:

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=402

Not sure if at it's highest setting it will be the same level as the stock F-XT shifter though. It was intended to replace a shorter stock lever.

~11" per Cobb's site, that's compared to the ~9" stock Forester height. So, you should be able to go even higher than stock for that WRC car feel.

I myself like the cobb to be very short. And the shifter bushings make is feel so nice.

Default Installed!

Installed the Bartboy lever in the wife's FXT this weekend. WOW!
I have the Kartboy in my WRX and it didn't make the difference that it did in the FXT.
I did do one thing differently though. In order to make install a little easier I bolted the fork to the lever before I pushed the ball back in the socket. In the process of tightening the bolt I noticed that there was still a lot of slop with the bolt tight so....
I kept tightening the fork bolt until the slop was gone but BEFORE it started to bind.
I think I'll pull the lever out of the WRX this week and do the same thing.
