I took my banjo filter out on the passenger side and put my car back together and the code is still up after a short trip around the block. Guess I need to check the OCV next.

I just took the OCV out today. It's clean with no build up of any sort and a 9v battery opens it to its full travel. I'm at a loss. What's next?

Two days ago I had the P0021 code come up on my '06 WRX. I just bought the car a month ago, I figured I would change the oil and remove the filters in the banjo bolts. I took the banjo bolt that goes to the turbo out and there was no screen in it . Also when I went to remove the two filters for the OCV I could not get to the banjo bolts! There is some sort of shield in the way (I took out the 2 bolts holding the driver side shield on and could not get it out for the life of me), all of the videos and DIY threads I have looked at were for '04 WRX and various years of the Legacy, they both do not have these shields.

So my questions are, does the '06 WRXs have a filter in the turbo banjo bolt and how in the world do you remove the shields to get the the banjo bolts of the OCV?

I'm also wondering if I should clear the codes myself or wait for them to clear themselves? I don't really want to drive it if it's not getting oil somewhere. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Has anyone come up with a more reliable filtration modification option for these lines, or perhaps different lines with a bigger filter in them? It would be nice to have filters, but obviously a bypass is needed.

I still have the filter on my 2005. It's been out and cleaned many many times and I have an aftermarket oil feed line. I run a Blouch 18g-xt and it's been fine. However, i think the screens from the older GD models are not nearly as restrictive based on these pictures but I could be wrong.

Mine has always come out clean.

I will say, when you pull the turbo, I strongly advise going ahead and replacing the turbo's oil return tube (rubber hose). Those things fit on very tight and are exposed to gobs and gobs of heat so removing them to get the turbo out is about all the trauma they can handle in many cases. If you want to avoid leaks just replace it every time you pull the turbo for something.

I had done that for years and then I had to pull the turbo to replace my turbo inlet, after re-installing with the existing oil return hose I now have a pretty bad leak down there so I'm going to have to do it again....

Update: I'm 5 drive cycles in and still no cel. I got a P0011 a week ago and I change the oil, removed the banjo filter from the passenger side and made sure the OCV was working. Then I unhooked the negative terminal to clear the code. If the Cel comes back on or have issues with my turbo in the near future I will update again....

My 08 had a TSB issue regarding these..dug it up and it doesn't say much. Just to inspect and or replace the screen after a turbo or suspsected turbo failure. Here is the .PDF

Default Filter screens

I had a turbo start to "sound dry"
Limped her home, pulled the block to turbo oil feed banjo and found METAL!
I think I saved the turbo but now I am having a low boost issues.
Is the car in a limp mode? Will a turbo car run with a seized turbo?
The next step is a leak down and pull the down pipe to check for seized or shaft play.

Sounds like the turbo is done. I'd check that first.

Update: 40 miles in and my turbo is squealing at 3500-4000 rpm. Looks like a vf52 is in order...

[UPDATE] - Changed my oil for the first time after getting it from the used car dealership I bought it from. Only 1300mi on that oil but I changed it anyway. Rotela t6 and a OEM Subaru filter. 500mi in and the light has not come back.

Cool Filters not the issue.....

My 2011 STi Limited has been running a Cobb Stage 1 OTS map, Cobb intake, and T1R catback exhaust since 50,000kms. This weekend doing my timing belt at 142,000kms (so late due to budget crisis), and I must say my oil is still clean and full all the time and I have checked all 3 of my filters just recently and none have any metal whatsoever. It's true that proper care and maintenance completely avoids this supposed weakness. And yes, I have tracked my car many times......

Here are the factory TSBs about this!

I was bored at work browsing identifix for common issues on the EJ255, and came across a post about these screens. Had never heard of them, glad to see there is some awareness on the forums about it.

Has anyone ever removed them "mesh oil screens" and damaged turbo from sending gunk through the turbo or turbo bearing oil alley ways?

On well serviced vehicles using high quality oil and filters, it is just not necessary to remove the filters.

Ok, noted. Unfortunatly I purched 06 wrx at 84,000 on the ODO. No records of maint. I have heard of others blowing turbo using good oils frequently and you can aggree that every motor is different, every driver is different in their habbits, and conditions vary for every car.

I had both banjo filters removed from my 05 Legacy GT back when I put a ej257 in. 90,000 miles later the vf52 has zero shaft play. Had the dp off a few day's back.

I use Amsoil European Classic 5w-40 and their filter doing 7000 mile OCI.

Blackstone Labs did a sample at 7000 miles, they said leave it in till 9000 miles and send in another sample. I just change it. Most of my DD is highway miles, 32 miles to work.

The vf52 has 100,000 miles on it. vf52 was installed 10,000 miles before I elected to swap out the ej255 for a ej257. The ej255 was using oil and I plan to keep the car.

I had encountered the same problem getting a CEL: p0021 camshaft position timing over advanced bank 2, and code p0011 camshaft position timing over advanced bank 1, I took a good look at the banjo bolt filters, and sure enough that was the problem, my advice would be just to remove those filters. (I removed all 3 filters)

I had a rod bearing failure a few years back and by having the turbo oil feed banjo filter still installed, I didn't have to rebuild my rather new turbo.

Just clean 'em. They are there for a reason.

Yea, I see your point, but there are a lot more stories about those filters causing oil starvation, which takes out the turbo, which takes out the engine.

If you have a good tune, and maintain good oil changes you should not have bearing issues.

There is a old saying, "it's all in the tune"

Was there a point at which Subaru stopped using these filters in the banjo bolt? My '17 STI now shows OCI at 6k miles recommended by the owner's manual...so I'm wondering if they abandoned them entirely or ?

Is it a problem if a prior owner removed the banjo bolt filters?
