Default Oil Change question: Something's not right here?

I got my first oil change at 3000 miles. The car now has 6000 miles and I'm taking it in tmrw for an oil change. Out of curiosity when I stopped at a gas station to fill up I popped the hood to check the oil level and nothing registered on the stick (yes the car was off )

Does the oil sit in the turbo for a while before it hits the pan or something? I freaked out and added 1 quart now it shows full. From empty to full in 1 quart I dont get it

Out of curiousity how many quarts is the WRX supposed to take 5 or 6?

it should register something, unless you are down to 4 quarts.

i think its 4.7 quarts. Read the owners manual that they give you when you buy your car cuz its in there under oil change.

I dunno. All I know is I stopped the car, shut off the engine, filled up gas, checked the oil and the dipstick was clean. Added 1 quart of brand new oil, dipped it, came out full on the stick but dirty in color.

You should be fine. 1 quart is all it takes to fill up the remaining oil. The engine has to settle... Besides, you are getting an oil change tomorrow. I'd switch to synthetic after 10-15k.

So you burnt a quart in the past 3k miles. Some cars do that when they are new, some continue to do it until they are crushed.

I switched to 5-30w mobil1 at 5k miles and my car doesnt burn a drop. It does leak out the drain plug though

I run 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. Well atleast I did when I lived in a place that had seasonal weather changes.

Still running 5w30 though.

the dipstick doesnt register anything up untill 4 quarts i believe. so even if you are at 3.9, for example, it will show as bone dry. i think.

NO... Don't use it.... That's weight is more set up for diesels....

you could over pressure the engine and blow seals...

Also might kill the warranty...

15w-50 is what you use when youre going to do an all day road course.

The euros use it for daily driving though.

You car, like most turbo's when driven hard burns oil, no worries, but do check it often. It will burn oil, even on the Mobil 1. I am seeing about 1 qt per 4000 miles.

In regards to the 15-50, I use it only when the weather is warm enough. Right now since we are hitting overnight temperatures in the 30's and low 40's, I have switched to 5W-30 (Motul). But come spring, rest assured the 15W-50 goes back in. I am not sure how many folks have pushed there cars' hard up a canyon road, to reach the top, and then pop the hood. Just look at the pretty orange-red glow of the turbo, and tell me honestly, you think 30 wieght is not getting cooked in there. The problem with running too light of an oil (and the same applies to some synths), is that the oil literally burns up on the walls of the turbo oil galleys, called coking. It is basically like eating a high colesteral diet. You can see the same thing happening to a stainless steel pan, when you burn oil in it. It leaves that really hard to get rid of brownish-yellow film on the pan (actually good cooks love that, as it is called seasoning a pan). The same is going on inside the tubo charger. Eventually the galleys clog. The heavier wieght oils are less resistant to coking.

So to dircetly answer your question, save the 15-50 for spring/summer, and use 5-30 for the winter.

If it was the peak of summertime, and you were going to be racing around Death Valley, Vegas or Palm Springs for 3,000 miles, then you might consider the 15w-50
