If people are putting in brand new oil....why the need for an oil change sooner??? I remember on my Chevy Cavalier that did "consume some oil". I made a few trips to Florida from Ohio... nice long drive, LOL....anyways....before I left, I got new tires, oil change...and I was on my way. Everytime about in West Virginia I think I was always a certain amount of oil down and the oil was always pretty clean from what I remember.

If the oil filter is what you are concerned with, then I'll bite....but as for the oil itself, why do you need to change oil sooner that you are essentially cleaning yourself by putting in new oil or at least making it last a bit longer. Imagine you needed to refill 1 quart every 1k. So you put in 5 new quarts of oil....you just changed your oil basically.

Sediment in the bottom of the oil can build up quicker than you think. Remember when you read your dipstick you are reading the top layer of oil.

I would change the frequency of oil changes so that i wouldnt have to put a quart or more if that was me.

My oil level light came on yesterday at 6961 miles, 3747 miles from oil change.

What makes my case particularly interesting – I checked the oil level fewer than 200 miles before the light came on, and the dipstick read at the top mark. As such, according to the dipstick – my oil level dropped one quart in fewer than 200 miles. There were no problems with oil level up to that point.

I added one quart of 0W20, and the light turned off after a few miles.

Wow, that really sucks!

Just an fyi, I've had my oil level vary by a quarter of a quart when checking it while parked in two different areas back to back.

on my older outback there was two sets of marks for full and low. And I was kind of confused what to use to measure. When i asked a mechanic he explained that unlike a standard 4 cyl engine that has the oil pan directly below the cylinders and which drains back quite quickly the boxer motor has to drain horizontally as well as vertically. At the pump you were supposed to use the lower pair of marks and overnight, the higher low mark and higher full mark. since it would have had time to completely drain down.

for what it's worth, i ended up about 1/2 qt over full and had to suction out the extra 1/2 qt tonight. luckily i have a suction pump and some sample bottles so that wasn't too difficult.

I emailed the dealer today and the gallon of subie 0w20 is 26.96 and 4 individual qts are 27.66 however he would rather not have to deal with ordering the gallons so he would give me the 4 qts for the price of the gallon. so that is what, eventually I will do.

planning on checking with blackstone on if what i pulled can be used for a UOA or if it would be better to wait since i overfilled and had to suction the excess. My first UOA was pretty decent and i'm sure this one would be also.

LOL...good one.

That dude above with the oil light coming on after 200 miles....shouldn't that garner some serious attention from the guys at SOA.....he is indeed breaking the barrier by losing oil within such a short amount of time...not even close to the 1200 "acceptable" limits.

Anyone that loves their 2012-2013 FB engine sounds like a lucky SOB to me. However...I'm not looking at stats...I'm just feeling sad for those that cannot get help while their engines have gremlins in them.

Correction- anyone who owns a 2011-2013FB... The 11' Foresters have plenty of reports of oil consumption with their FB25.

Damn I love my job. The maintenance mgr hooked me up with a few bottles of electrical contact cleaner. I have lots of chemicals, but I was out so kudos to danny! Gonna spritz the driver side intake cam position sensor cover and the injector bodies with it.
Anyone else have BLACK fuel injectors?
As often as I have the hood open, the engine has stayed very clean except for the injectors. They have an oily residue, but none in the surrounding areas.

Well I've been driving my old truck more lately. 770 miles and my current diptick reading is down a half inch since I changed it. Castrol Edge 0w20. $8.99 a quart. Will report back at 1000mi on this oil. This is my second check since changing it.
Just cleaned off the oily residue from the cam position sensor cover and injector bodied.
No one with a $20,000 new car should have to be this hassled.
Thank goodness the Golf R32 is gone from the used lot at the corner VW store.

I think so.

Before leaving on my trip I somehow lost 8-12oz of oil in less than 1000 miles. After my trip (2000 miles) I was only down 3-4oz (definitely normal imho). We didn't hypermile, but we weren't racing it either.

I need to go and actually verify the oil level as they last time I checked it was at the last fuel stop upon reaching home, and it was warm but I don't usually see much difference between hot/cold readings

Neither do I. 99% of my driving is 50mph and under and definitely not what I would deem harsh driving. I have taken it down several dirt roads fast, but never redlined or anything.
Even cars that I have truly "beat up" on havent had oil consumption problems. Only oil-related failure I ever had was a Sentra with lots of miles that burned a quart a week. But I only paid $400 for the Sentra.

I agree with fyboy about the readings, mine are virtually the same hot or cold too. It dont take long for the 0w20 to drain down. Hell youre supposed to check it when you gas up. no way to do that cold!

IIRC didn't you say that you drive 110 MPH for over an hour on the turnpike? Is that not done often?

Has anyone done a compression test and/or leakdown test on their oil consuming engines?

That's a really good question. From all the posts that I've read, I don't think I've seen anyone mention that they've had either one of these tests done. I wonder what it would take to get a dealership to offer these tests free of charge?

St- you dont recall correctly, and you are just the newest one to make pissing on me your hobby.
I commented on one ****ing trip down the florida turnpike. you know that though. If I drove 110 mph every day, or even week, I wouldnt have much gas money. prick.

As to your question about paying to have tests done to the car, which is quite fitting into the conversation-
I plan on getting spark plugs replaced next oil change, and after that I'll look into getting a leakdown test done.
Seems like someone would have gotten one by now, but with the FUDGED, BOTCHED, ETC consumption tests that folks have talked about on here, I doubt anyone has. Even folks on the verge of "qualifying" for warranty work havent reported Subaru doing any actual troubleshooting or testing of any scientific sort. After a slew of headaches and the repeated promises to fix things that went unfulfilled I dont think I'd want any florida dealers touching the car.
Maybe I'll see if the local Ford dealer will work on Subarus. My last visit to a dealer was an hour and a half drive each way for a six +++ quart "consumption test" . If that dealer were to send me a rep with a loaner car and take my car and actually do these tests to determine whats going on with the engine I'd maybe consider it. But I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Actually, the more I think about it, the local Ford dealer would be a great place to make my "this was worth waiting for?" mock commercial on youtube.
Ahhh I can see it now... the back window shall be painted with " Bill Bryan and Subaru wont fix this oil burning car".

Wow, ok man, it was just a comment that you had made previously, so don't get your panties in a bunch.

You calling me a prick? Is that really necessary when I am just reciting your previous post? If you really wanna play this game I can play it all day long. My comment wasn't to be a jerk, but now that you fire away you can expect the same.

Happy New Year, you should make it a resolution to stop being a jerk. Not everyone is "out to get you".

That said, can't we all just get along?

Peace, brother.
But you did misconsrtue (sp?) my post about 110 on the turnpike.
How bout we dont cast any more stones? Stop criticizing me and more or less looking to blane me for what many others are also experiencing.
My post youre referring to went something like-"well i dont ever get out on the turnpike much, and i hate driving in orlando and on toll roads, but I happened to finally get out on the turnpike and cruise at around a buck ten for a good hour of driving".
Not sure exactly how it was stated but there was a clear allusion to not getting out on the florida turnpike very often. I have no real reason to be out that way too much and its a thirty minute drive just to get on it. virtually ALL my driving is in lake county florida. Mostly 50mph zones.
fwiw I do apologize for the name calling. I am admittedly a bit defensive as I have a new car with a worthless warranty, no useable dealer network to speak of locally. And despite there being a growing number of "unique individuals" experiencing this oil loss problem it does seem that some of the subaru faithful find offense at my dissatisfaction as a consumer. As much as I dont wish this for other consumers, at least I'm not alone.
This car has strezsed me the goddamned **** out for a year now. I think your Happy New Year response was appropriate. I need to quit sressing over this headache of a car, but honestly its hatd to do. Had SOA ever followed through with ANY of their promises, everything would have been fine.
But yeah man, how bout this year, we discuss the cars, the company, and the problems/solutions, as well as inform other oil burning owners of where the situation has gotten?
Peace bro, and have a great year.

Got it - no worries. I agree to not disagree. I really was not trying to be malicious with the post about the parkway driving, I thought you drive that often. My bad.

I think when it warms up, you need to go to a dealership to redo the consumption test the correct way (obviously the first time wasn't your fault). Then drive the car hard for 1,000 miles, I truly believe that it will net the 1 qt loss that is the criteria for short block replacement. Then hopefully you'll enjoy the car more without having to worry about the engine.
