Looks like a US WRX engine and upgrades to speak of? I'm guessing your running samco hoses at minimum.. hopefully better than stock exhaust too.

I'd like to see some pics of it installed in the car!

Thanks - Jon

I love it! If I had the money, I would do the same thing, and if my RS ever go totalled from behind, I want the 2.5L going into an OBS. Good job, can't wait to see the dyno on it, and good luck with the smog police.

mods now:
samco hoses, jdm upipe, FP turbo, Exedy clutch and flywheel, Prodrive GT suspension, 18mm rear sway, and '99 RS rear disc brakes.

After smog:
willwood front 4-pots, 565 injectors, walbro fuel pump, our own turbo back exhaust and LINK.

After I buy my house:
a new paint job (grey or red haven't decided), top and bottom rear spoilers, front and rear wrx/sti seats, and running boards

Looks like someone forgot to get a Turbo transmission while they were at it.

Sorry to dissapoint you. I left the 2.2 tranny in on purpose.
I have already used a 2.5 tranny in another conversion plus a 2.0 tranny. I want to see what this one can do. So far, this tranny suit my neds best. Short 1-3 gears(rs style) and long top 4,5 (wrx style).

This is a happy medium for now

are you telling me that the ratios for 1-3 gears on the outback 2.2 tranny are same as the RS and 4,5 are the WRX?

NO not all gears are the same. the first three are closer to the RS than the WRX and the last two are closer to the WRX then the RS.

Here is the tale of the tape:
2.2 manual tranny gear ratios
1st - 3.545
2nd - 2.111
3rd - 1.448
4th - 1.088
5th - .780

Final 3.900

damn maybe i should put that tranny in my car.... i always hit the rev limit JUST at the beggining of the end of the 1/4 so i lose a lot of time trying to chnage into 5th which i never get in anyways cause i miss it... i tried even changing each gear earlier and still was just done letting the clutch out and the 1/4 was done..

HOK you could change your final drive. Since your profile says you have an RS, then your current final drive is 4.11 so change your ring and pinion gears to 3.90. However your in Hong Kong so I'm confused if you have an RS (didn't know they offered them there).

either way go up in your final drive

4.44 --> 4.11
4.11 --> 3.90

and if you're at 3.90, then I think there are some 3.65's out there somewhere. If you've got standard gear ratios and you're hitting 5th with 3.90 final drive in the 1/4 mile.. your car is damn fast!

I was under the impression that these are the 2.2L N/A gear ratios

1st - 3.545
2nd - 1.947
3rd - 1.366
4th - 0.972
5th - 0.780
final drive ratio - 3.90

What you have listed is RS gears, except for the final drive.

1st - 3.545
2nd - 2.111
3rd - 1.448
4th - 1.088
5th - 0.780
reverse - 3.333
final drive ratio - 4.11

Have you proven that maybe the OBS gears are different than standard 2.2L impreza's? Where did you get your info?

My info comes from here: Gear Ratio Reference Thread

The SVX uses a 3.54:1 final drive ratio.

tire size helps, but what your looking for is more gear, not less so that wouldn't really work out for you. final drive would be where I'd start and put it to 3.90

Tell you want I'm looking for 4.11 ring & pinion set, if you have someone in Canada who can pull them out for you they can send them to me I'll swap them in and send back the 3.90 ring & pinion set from my car.

Then we'll both be happy! and withought paying $600 to get new ring/pinion sets.

Heh, there is also 3.70's, but from wha tI can tell the 3.70 & 3.90 use one pinion and the 4.111 & 4.444 use a different one. SO I imagine going from a 4.111 to a 3.90 would be the most expensive since you would need a new pinion and ring gear.
