Default GM's Future Product: 2012–2014

Quote:
General Motors got high-fives from investors in November after its oversubscribed initial public offering raked in $23 billion and taxpayers got a partial repayment. But the successful stock sale says as much about the tuneup GM got from bankruptcy as it does about the General’s ability ***8197;to nearly hold its share in an intensely competitive market.

First, some well-publicized background: Following the ouster of CEO Rick Wagoner in March 2009, GM declared bankruptcy on June 1. At the urging of ***8197;the Obama administration’s automotive task force, the court put the automaker on a crash diet. When GM emerged on July 10, it left behind four brands (Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn), 12,000 employees, 1500 dealerships, and $3000 in per-vehicle costs.

Newly downsized GM is a profit machine with a much lower break-even point: a U.S. market of 10 million versus 16 million for the old GM. Put another way, GM needs to sell about 1.9 million vehicles in the U.S. to break even. With 2010 sales running at a roughly 12-million pace, GM has been making lots of money: $4.8 billion through October.

Companies don’t usually sell stock so soon after bankruptcy. But Uncle Sam was eager to recoup part of its $50 billion investment, and GM was eager to lose its “Government Motors” nickname. ***8197;A recovering car market combined with a dose of American patriotism enabled GM to hike its IPO price from $26–$29 to $33 per share. The government stake has been reduced to 33.3 percent, but taxpayers lost $10 billion.

The stock market now ***8197;values GM at $51 billion, a little shy of Ford’s $58 billion. Whatever GM is worth depends on its future earnings stream, and that will depend largely on new product. The company sells a lot of Buicks in China, but demand there is expected to slow when government stimulus programs expire. GM promises to make European arm Opel profitable, but it remains a money pit. In the U.S., GM’s market share has fallen only slightly, from 19.8 percent to 19.0 in 2010, despite being down to four brands (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC). Product development got squeezed when GM was losing money, so new-model introductions through 2013 are skimpy. With industry outsider Dan Akerson—GM’s fourth CEO in 18 months—now at the helm, the company will have to dig deeply to maintain its IPO momentum.
So what exactly does your GM stock buy you? Here are a few of the upcoming vehicles that will determine whether you can retire on your investment or if you’ll be using GM stock certificates to line your bird cage.

2013 Chevrolet Corvette (C7)

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport The Corvette continues as front-engine, V-8–powered, but GM is reportedly working to reduce mass (or at least hold the line) to maintain C6 performance. Slightly longer than before, the C7 will have styling allegedly inspired by the split-window ’63 Sting Ray. Interior quality, not a Corvette strength, is now a high priority, and GM has set Audi as the benchmark for materials and fits. Three versions will be offered: base, Z06, and ZR1 (base versions may be called Grand Sport). At launch, the V-8 portfolio will mirror today’s, ranging from 430 to 638 horsepower. Later, all three engines will undergo displacement reductions to improve fuel economy.

2013 Cadillac ATS

2013 Cadillac ATS (artist's rendering) GM’s new rear-drive platform will be the basis for Cadillac’s BMW 3-series competitor, the ATS, as well as the next-gen CTS. Three versions of the ATS will be spun off the platform: a sedan, a coupe, and a convertible. The ATS will probably get a 2.8-liter V-6 and 3.6-liter V-6 at launch, and all-wheel drive should be optional; a 2.4-liter turbo four will come later. An ATS-V is planned—there’s room underhood for a small-block V-8, but a turbo V-6 has a better chance.

2014 Cadillac CTS

2011 Cadillac CTS sedan In addition to switching from the Sigma platform to the lighter Alpha component set, the CTS will likely come only in sedan form. GM is hedging its CAFE bets by preparing the CTS for a four-cylinder turbo, but on arrival, a 2.8-liter V-6 is more probable (a larger, 3.6-liter V-6 should still be an option). The CTS-V continues with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.

2012 Buick Verano

2012 Buick Verano Buick’s version of the Chevy Cruze goes on sale in the U.S. later this year. Unlike the Cruze, the front-drive Verano will offer a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower. Prices are expected to start at $22,000 and rise to $27,000 for a fully loaded example.

2013 Buick Crossover

2011 Buick Crossover teaser Buick’s compact, Delta II–based crossover is due at the end of 2012. Standard versions are slated to come with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder; a 1.4-liter turbo engine may be optional. Though it will have a sporty look, the Buick’s diminutive dimensions, odd proportions, and rakish rear end have earned the little crossover the nickname “Glamorous Potato.”

Previewed by the XTS Concept at the 2010 Detroit show, the front-drive XTS (all-wheel drive may be optional) replaces the unloved STS and the long-in-the-tooth DTS. A 3.6-liter, direct-injection V-6 will be the sole engine for the first few ***8197;years. Later in the ***8197;product ***8197;cycle, a plug-in hybrid version will make use of the two-mode system from the Saturn Vue hybrid with lithium-ion batteries; the base engine should become the smaller, 3.2-liter V-6; and a turbocharged V-6 with more than 300 horsepower may slot in as an option.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

2013 Chevrolet Malibu (spy photo) Built on the same Epsilon II platform as today’s Malibu, the next version may shrink from its current 112.3-inch wheelbase to the 107.8-inch length of the Buick Regal’s. The justification? GM wants to make room for the larger, Epsilon II–based Impala. The first few years of production will get a 180-hp, 2.4-liter four that may be replaced by a 2.0-liter four; a 3.0-liter V-6 should be available initially, but in the interest of fuel economy, it may be supplanted by a turbo 2.0-liter with about 220 horsepower.

2014 Chevrolet Impala

2011 Chevrolet Impala LTZ The next Impala will remain a front-drive sedan and will share its fire wall, front floor pan, and much of its engine compartment with the Cadillac XTS. Expect a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and an optional 3.0-liter V-6; in later years, a 2.0-liter four should power base versions, with a turbo 2.4-liter possibly replacing the V-6.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 After the Camaro convertible arrives this spring, the 550-hp (estimated) ZL1 Camaro launches with the CTS-V’s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. Sometime after 2015, the Camaro is likely to migrate from Zeta to the lighter Alpha rear-drive architecture. The new edition may get a turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 2.8-***8197; to 3.0-liter V-6, and (don’t fret, Camaro fans) a small-block V-8 option.

2014 Chevrolet “PS”

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP The “PS” stands for performance sedan, and GM is still considering whether to build this Zeta-derived vehicle. Insiders think of it as a four-door Camaro. You should think of it as the spiritual successor to the Pontiac G8 but with Chevrolet styling. Engines would mirror those of the defunct G8: a 300-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 and a V-8 with more than 400 horses.

What? GM spent all that time and money developing the CTS wagon and coupe only to drop them a couple of years later? Doesn't smell right to me, maybe the coupe and wagon are just delayed until 2015. If true, way to show your commitment, GM.

Good to see a C7 in the works, and that they're committed to light weight and interior quality. Also good to see the G8 coming back.

Y'know, I am a little amazed that Gubment Motors still has the Buick line. Who still buys Buicks? Old people? I don't know a single person my age (30's) who owns one.

They're actively trying to change that. You gotta start somewhere. Often, industry politics, perception of the overall General Motors brand, and other factors make it difficult to just sack an entire brand from under their umbrella.

Release better cars, and that will change. People don't hate the name. They hate the cars that wear the name.

I love the quote of "and GM has set Audi as the benchmark for materials and fits"; what a joke..........Stop talking and do something. Setting Audi as a benchmark? How about trying to hit Hyundai's or Ford's level at this point and then go from there..........

I have stock in GM and I am a loyal GM fan when it comes to US Automakers and I think their new direction is GREAT! The lineups are fresh and I think the growing affinity to buy American will help them out. The few cars i would ditch my Legacy for are all GM's (Camaro, 05 GTO, CTS-V, Silverado Duramax 3500 HD )

Well they lost a customer for life in me, and my family, and my extended family. No reason to by GM when you can buy Ford. That is if your stuck on buying American.

I'm stuck on not buying anything after going to the Auto show on Tuesday night. All GMs seem to have the same steering wheel these days; the Regal, Cruze and Volt looked and felt exactly the same. And they all had windows too tall to rest my elbow on the sill. Only the Transit Connect passed that test.

I can't say I liked Ford much better, though. Everyone has windshields so steeply raked there was a massive amount of glare on the glass.

The Malibu and Impala look like crap. Nothing from GM that I want outside the Vette and Caddy.

I hate that. It's what made the solstice absolutely uncomfortable when i was shopping for a car a couple years ago.

I understand the sentiment about the steering wheels, but a lot of companies have that. Maybe a different material for the nicer cars, but since I don't mind the design of the wheel, having the same wheel on multiple cars doesn't bother me. I'm not opposed to commonization, parts bin stuff, as long as the part itself is a decent part.

If I didn't have a moral objection to buying a product from a government owned enterprise, when the US Government clearly should not be owning any enterprises... with the additional red flag of having on-board surveillance already built in with OwnStar...

The ATS coupe would be interesting. It will also be interesting to see what happens with the C7 Vette.

The G8 should come back as a Chevy competitor to the Charger, (perhaps "Chevelle" as another muscle-era coupe turned current-era sedan), and an extended wheelbase version as the Buick variant. China already has the extended wheelbase Zeta sedan as a Buick... it would be easy as pie to sell it here, too.

I don't see anything there that's going to help them meet the new CAFE standards. I'm sure they've got something planned though.

I'm excited that they're finally going to bring the Corvette interior up to par. Hopefully they'll offer sport seats too, which will address basically the only two concerns anyone ever has with that car.

Theyll classify more of their crossovers as trucks, which get looser CAFE standards. Voila, problem solved. If it isn't they'll lobby to have increased credits for the existence of the Volt until thr numbers line up magically.

i know the china part. none of my friends have buicks. i see plenty of old white guys driving them. some cars have a stereotype of being 'cars for black people', and a lot of the people who say it sorta mean it as an insult to both. years ago it was caddy. the caddy wasn't a real luxury car, and the blacks that like them aren't really upperclass either. i've never associated buick with any particular race.

for what it's worth, my dad used to love them, so in order in my lifetime, we have had: 80 Regal, 86 Century, 87 Riviera, 88 Riviera, then he moved onto minivans until he got a 95 riviera supercharged. my dad's black.

i've always loved that 88 t-type...
