Default Keep & Fix OR Sell?

I haven't had my 2000 Impreza Outback Sport for very long. I bought it about 4 months ago from the original owner, got a pretty good deal on it, and fell in love with the car.

2 months after purchase I started hearing my brakes squeak and then later, crank-crank-crank when I applied too much pressure too soon. It's winter so I don't know if that has any effect but as I live in San Francisco, the temperatures here aren't too extreme. I took it to the shop where I had the original pre-sale inspection done and they replaced the rotors and brake pads. Good as new. But my pockets were empty.

A month later, the noise (squeaks and cranks) came back. I didn't take it back to the mechanic who'd done them before because I didn't want them to do the same repairs, and I didn't like their service to begin with.

Then, just over a week ago, I started hearing a noise coming from my 2.2L engine. I took it to my mother's trusted mechanic and he diagnosed it as faulty pistons and quoted me $3000+ to put in another used block. I took it to another mechanic (subaru specialist) and he recommending building the engine and told me it would cost roughly the same (parts are cheaper but labor is more). In both cases they would be putting in new accessories and replacing the timing belt (I'm due for it). My mother's mechanic could do the replacement in two days (I'd be paying for 12 labor hours); and the subaru specialist recommended by a co-worker of my boyfriend's said I'd have to leave the car for two weeks for the engine to be rebuilt.

I have a pretty modest-paying job so I'm trying to decide what my best bet is. Do I invest the $3000-$3500 and hope that'll be my last visit to the mechanic? Or do I sell the car at or slightly-below value (KBB minus repair costs) and then look for another car? I really do love my Subaru, but love, boy is it expensive!

What would you do in my scenario?

Sell and buy a new '06 Outback Sport, or it may be time for a WRX swap. But hey, im 14 so the WRX swap may sound abit far-fetched

Remember seeing advertisements on TV for car dealerships that say "$2000 minimum trade! Push it, Pull it, drag it IN!"... You might want to try one of those. Since the engine is still running, a trade in might be your best bet. You can get a good deal on left over '06 Subarus right now. My girlfriend just went through a similiar situation when her car's engine died just out of warranty. We traded the car in with the dead engine and got her into some new wheels. She only makes about $20k/year so I would guess you and her are in a similiar income bracket ie modest. Having the piece of mind of a new car with warranty is worth a lot to certain people (myself included).

I personally would not put any more money into the car. I would also not give it away to a dealer who had a "$2000 minimum trade" scam. The $2K they give you is already in the price of the car they are selling, unless it is new (then they sell at full MSRP). If you got a pretty good deal on it, then sell it for a reasonable price and cut your long term losses.
