In my TDI, this ambient lighting came from above, so I was wondering if that's what you were trying to do.
They will be on all the time the key is on. The power I'm tapping is the power for the mirror, it is switched on with the key in the accessory position. I too have a jetta so I know what you are talking about. They will not be connected to the map lights at all other than sharing the ground. If I tapped the power for the map lights, the leds would be on all the time, even when the car is off

The rest of the lights I added will be on with the headlight switch.

Make sense?

^^ Yes, thank you. I'll look forward to seeing how closely you can mimic the very dim ambient lighting of your Jetta.

Wow. I just spent most of last night and early this morning driving through this blizzard and while the tires are not the best I was very wrong about the capabilities of this car. I had absolutely no problems in the snow and this car got through some very very severe conditions like a champ. I will definitely be getting different tires for next year but I am just wowed by the capabilities of subaru's. They have never let me down.

this is why i want to try to find something to hold the resistor, because instead of a 2.2kohm i might use 4.75kohm to further cut down the light. it has been a while since i have been in the jetta at night so i don't 100% remember how dim it is. even at 4.5mA through a 2400mcd LED (rated full power at 30mA) it is still a little bright, the larger resistor would bring me down to the 2.2mA range

They're bulldogs in the snow, but that's really ANY Subaru. The only thing cars like the Impreza and Legacy need to watch out for is getting high-centered. Roads are usually fine, but I had a close call having fun on a big hill and I drove through a deep drift that could've been trouble. Luckily momentum was on my side and I was able to power through it.

The thing I like about VW's ambient lighting of the cup holder area is that you can't even tell where the light is coming from. It's almost like the LED is recessed deep into a hole, so you can't see the source of the light, yet the cup holders are dimly illuminated and easy to find in the dark. Very subtle, but very effective.

Will have to agree about these cars in snow and ice. I was pulling into a few parking lots to see what it could do in snow with ice under it.. The answer is not get stuck. haha

Getting back to my "issue" yesterday though. All everything was, was simply two blown fuses. There was one in the underhood fuse box, and one in the cabin one. So if anyone else has that problem, that's it. Car is back to normal now.

which could be possible if i mounted the LED's up higher and I might still try that, as it is now you can definitely tell where they are (i can in the jetta though too)

I am getting sick of working on it, they are in now, and I think I am going to drive it like this for a while and see if it bothers me or not. if it does, it won't be that difficult to add another piece of plastic to mount them in so the are further recessed and then find some sort of diffuser to put in the hole

as it is right now, the light is subtle, you don't know it is there until you put something in the cupholder, then it is lit up.

pics later

Sounds great.

As I was thinking about ambient lighting a few weeks ago, I was wondering if it would be possible to mount an LED behind the four slits that are already there, between where you put your overhead LEDs. Did you consider that? What are those slits for, anyway?

haha Yes. These new cars are so computer based that one small fuse can literally paralyze the car. It's quite ridiculous.

In other questioning, for those of you that are running Rally Armors? A friend of mine is selling some one week old RA's from his 2012 style STI. Will they fit? Or should I just go on the site and get the ones FOR the 12/13 Impreza? I plan on doing the aero splash guards and the RA's at the same time.

Also, has anyone with a 12/13 Impreza gotten the black STI lip yet? I can't find anyone with pictures of one. Only the "normal" Subaru optional front lip kit..

the microphone. w/o removing it I can't do it as I still have a factory HU, albeit from a forester.

after much more testing today to see what brightness I want my LED's at i have settled on 1.5mA, rather than 4.5mA. which means I don't have the proper resistors w/o putting 2-3 in series. so I will get some new resistors and then finish it up. at 4.5 I think they would be distracting at at full brightness (30mA) they would be obnoxious.

the overheads I might leave at 4.5 though because once the other lights are on they blend in pretty well, need to test the jetta tonight and see how bright those are again. I do have a 4.75kOhm i could swap into those and make them 2.2mA and I might still do that.

I also added some spacers for the overheads so now they are recessed even more and really don't bother me at all.

you need the ones for the 2.0i, they are different

I don't think the 3rd Gen STi's Rally Armors will bolt on to your 4th Gen Impreza.

I haven't seen anyone with an STi lip for the Impreza and at the price they're asking for it, I'm honestly not surprised. I think the body-color front underspoiler kit looks much cooler than the STi front lip anyways!

Hmmm, I've already replaced my HU with a Pioneer, so my original mic is non-functional right now anyway. If I decide to follow your overhead ambient lighting lead, I might try shining my LEDs through the existing mic slits.

And for those of you running the Rally Armor mud flaps who have the factory Subaru aero splash guards, did you have any issue with install? The listing I was reading seemed rather sure you couldn't have the aero guard extensions.. Is there a special kit needed if you have them?

Some people have already done it here in the forums...4 or 5 possibly. It works, you just have to dremel or drill new holes. Search around, you will find it.

Excellent! Thanks!

In other words, order the 12/13 ones and with a bit of massaging, it'll work no problem?

I want it exactly like the white one in question on 148

Yea I think if you have no problem with doing a little customization work then it should work out fine. There have been other examples and pictures around as well but you might have to use the thread/post search to find more, it's a lot easier then searching page by page...or just contact MACamillion and I'm sure he can answer some of your questions

While I'm thinking about it.. It doesn't seem like it, but.. Is there any way to make it so that the map lights also come on when you open the door like the done light does? Even with LED's inside, I still find myself needing to switch on the map lights as the dome is too far back to be able to illuminate most of the front..

4.5mA is too bright for the overhead lights, so I added another 2.2kOhm resistor (4.4kOhm total) and now I am at 2.2mA and it is a little dim. if you do it I suggest 3mA total power. assuming you use the same LED's I did.

i suppose i could take it back down for a 3rd time today, but I really quit now. I will try it for a while and see how I like it, if it is just too dim, I will unsolder 1 resistor and replace it with a 1kOhm so i have 3.2kOhm total and the 3mA rating.

i tried to get pics of the completed project but the only areas that show up well are the cupholders and the cubby under the radio, everything else is so subtle I just can't get a pic of it. pretty much all the other lighting i added is similar brightness to all other lights in the car, so it matches really well, just not photographable.

Edit: 2.2mA for the overhead is perfect when out driving, I'm not changing anything. And 1.2mA for the rest of the lights is good too. The footwells are very subtle, the cubby is perhaps a little bright, but no brighter than the radio above it. And the door cards are barely noticeable before putting something in them

i haven't taked the dome light apart, is there a reflector in there? if not make one up like i did for the hatch out of aluminum foil tape, that doubled the light output of my hatch light.
