Question Question for the server-class hardware know-it-alls

If a sever has both 32-bit and 64-bit PCI slots, do the busses share bandwidth, or are they separate busses like 32-bit PCI and AGP? Googling hasn't been able to provide a straight answer. Thanks.

I kinda figured. They're Compaq workstations that unfortunately I'm not in front of at the moment, so their name and series escape me. They're pretty recent P4 Xeon-based Avid editing suites. I'm not sure of the mobo chipset.

I'm trying to figure out if the 32-bit gigabit NICs I installed in the last free PCI slots may be depriving the Avid encoder/decoder boards of needed bandwidth on the 32-bit bus. Before I suggest to the production manager that they fork over $200 for some 64-bit NICs to fill the Compaq's unused 64-bit slot, I wanted to make sure that doing so wouldn't make the problem even worse if the two busses did indeed share bandwidth.

the quickreference guide will show PCI buses on it. most likely are number of slots are sharing a bus.

Yes they are separate up to a point. They are on individual busses but then merger into the chipset.

Normally the 32 bit stuff is controlled by the southbridge, and the 64bit/PCI-E stuff by the north bridge.

Between the two is about 2GB of bandwidth. From the north bridge to the proc, is near 4gb of bandwidth.

So could you improve performance on the 32bit bus by moving your NIC to the 64Bit buss? Possibly. But NIC traffic is so minimal at best (100Mb about 12MB) Unless your on a GB network working with large files....

Yes, and yes. These A/V files range from a few megs to a few gigs, being moved back and forth from the Avids to the file server.

All the switches were upgraded to GB, then new NICs were put in the servers, then later all the workstations that got rolled out came 'stock' with GB connections. The Avids weren't touched (until I did it), but were possibly the most in need of a faster connection to the network than any other machine there except for the servers themselves.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Yeah, I have a Tyan Tiger MPX, and moving the gigabit card to the 64-bit PCI slot def. showed improvement over the entire system.
