Default Car is down for a year, Time for a build

Well what would you recommend? here is what I have done

Rallitek AP With a Custom tune by Airboy in Calgary
Grounding kit
CAI
UEL Headers custom mid pipe and a 40 series flow-master muffler
Perrin 25 mil sways
Tanabe 210 springs
Spherical End-links in the front and cobb (?) End-links at the rear.

The car has 107,xxx km on it and will need a timing belt soon and I was thinking of having the cams re-grounded at the same time.

I don't have a pile of money kicking around but I do want something fun and reliable to come back to.

recommendations???***********

Well, suspension you should ask in the correct forum.

Since you live up in America's Hat, you should be talking to Tom at Techworks Engineering. You definitely want a set of his 4-2-1 HO EL headers. If you want to get fun, you should also get a set of his Stage II cams and 11.5:1 pistons. That'll pretty much finish as much of the engine as most people can afford to do.

I'm thinking of doing this too - just wanted to throw it out here but will certainly call TWE and talk to them...

Should one stay with the HO (1.75" primaries) TWE 4-2-1 headers if you are not going to do cams or stray from the 10:1 stock pistons? or is the SS (1.65") a better option at that point?

Also, is it worth getting the heads mildly (or properly) ported/polished when staying with stock cams and pistons, but certainly going with one of the TWE headers and a tune?

any opinions are appreciated.

thanks,
M

I asked Tom about which headers to get. He said that if you're going to raise compression on any of the EJ25* NA motors, you need the High Output rather than the SuperStreet ones. For the 05-07 cars, the intake manifold was improved enough that you can pick wither you want the SS or the HO design. The SS will make a little more torque a little sooner than the HO design. The HO design will wait a little longer before it starts making more torque but the it'll hold it longer (means considerably more power).

Personally, with an 05-07 car, I'd use the HO header. The 05-07 needs more help holding torque into redline than it does picking up torque sooner. I have to say that I'm extremely happy with the way my car drives with the TWE 4-2-1 HO EL header and the Delta 1000 Grind cams. I had to drive a stock 05 recently and I was actually very surprised how slow it felt in comparison.

You've already done crap headers though

I picked up 20hp at the wheels over the OBX headers when I switched to the TWE headers. The OBX headers were already considerably above the UEL Borla reps. You also won't be able to safely raise compression on a UEL header due to the poor scavenging increasing knock.

True but I don't have 1200$ for headers, and wasn't consitering hi compresion pistions but should I??? i was thinking more along the lines of bushings, cams, and maybe a LSD

As I said, with the TWE header and the Delta 1000 cams, I'm actually really happy with my car. I'm MUCH happier with it than when I had cams and the UEL headers, much happier with it than when I had cams and the OBX headers. I really think the TWE headers are the single best power mod I've done to the car. They're more than worth the price increase over the UEL or OBX headers.

Ty, do you have any other head work done besides cams?
- valve seat work, valves themselves?
- springs (upgrade from oem)?
- P&P?

Also, out of curiosity, how is your setup for DD & fuel economy on longer road trips?

cheers,
M

This was all planned, then I got laid off. So, no.

Not very good but I blame that on the gumball tires as much as anything. Fuel economy has been poor for much longer then I've been playing with the engine. City-only driving gets about 22-24MPG, mixed gets me 24-26MPG, and all-highway gets me 28-32MPG depending on the wind.

That's quite respectable given the mods. I'm averaging 28MPG on a 90% highway commute stock. Could probably get a little better if I could do between 65 and 70 instead of 70 and 75... but traffic won't allow me to go that slow. At 65 I am getting passed by everybody and have semis riding my ass... at 70 I am barely keeping with traffic. I suppose the highway speed limit is just a suggested speed.

No reason to, unless he wants to significantly raise his redline. For a budget street build, I don't see that being very helpful.

Honestly, the TWE header plus a mild cam is going to give you 90% of what there is to get on a street motor. Assuming you get it tuned of course. You can do a few other little things, but there's little to be gained. 5, maaaaybe 10hp on top of the header and cams. If you can pull the motor in your garage, you can add both for something like $1500 US, and that's not bad for real gains. If that's past the budget, I'd start with the cams and wait until you can get the header later, since it's a very easy install.

Edit: went back and read the OP, and you already have basically all the minor stuff for engines. There's really nothing left for you but cams and the better header... except for going FI.

The stock cams and stock springs will survive 7000-7200RPM. The problem is what happens when you toss cams into the mix. With the Delta 1000 Grind cams, the stock springs are only safe to 6500RPM. The sad part about that is that the engine will keep breathing another 500RPM or more above that. If a valvespring set were less than $600 for the SOHC heads, it would be worth it to upgrade just to get all the cams have.

True. I don't think I paid $600 for my spring and retainer set, but I didn't get TWE's either.

AFAIK, the only set out there is Supertech's. Distributor cost on those is like $550.

OK, you made me curious enough that I went and checked my notes.

$550 is for the springs and valves. Springs alone is cheaper by a fair margin.
