All -

I have updated the first posts. I have reformatted them to be easier to follow and I have added the correct reassembly steps and the programming instructions. Please read through this and let me know if anything needs to be changed.

Thanks!

Ben,

I would change the title or at least the headline in your first post to say this mod will work with the 2011/2012 WRX (just to clear up any possible confusion). Other than that, I like the new flow of the DIY. Everything makes sense and the pictures looks good.

And on that note, here is my completed key:

Shell: $25 (xluben)
Legacy Donor Key: $30 (eBay)
Laser Cut Blade: $40 (local locksmith)

Total Cost: $95

Overall I'm incredibly pleased with this mod. Even though I had to hack up my valet key to get to the transponder, I'm perfectly fine with it since I now have 3 working master keys. Also, I highly recommend shopping around for a local locksmith to cut the flip key blade. I didn't trust myself with a dremel and a cutoff wheel enough to mess with modifying one of my keys and the $40 price to have the key cut was totally worth it.

Thanks for the great write up!

So I'm attempting to do this for an 08, I realize this thread has been beat to crap by dumb people who don't read and hope I don't come across as that. I want to buy the ECM, from an 05-09 legacy and then I have to get an extra key for each key I want, because none of my current ones will work, right? So two keys will put me back $200+? Is there an easier way to do this?

You're correct. For the 08 you'll need all new keys (remotes) to work with the new module.

Has anyone had any luck with a local pick'n pull? Is it cheaper on eBay if you have looked?

I was able to find the keyless module for $25 on craigslist, legacy key for $36, shell for $25, and cut for $25, bringing the total to $111. If you want 2 keys, yea you're getting upwards of $200.

What you could do though, which I may in the future, is buy a key fob from an 05-08 legacy like the ones we had originally and use that instead of making another flip key. You can find those on ebay for ~$20.

You don't need new keys, they will still work, remember you are only replacing the remote keyless function here.

The absolutely cheapest way to do this is get the legacy keyless, one used legacy key, a new housing/blade, and one used old legacy teardrop fob. Swap the keyless units, make your all in one key by hacking the valet key for the transponder, and program the old used legacy teardrop for use with the other stock keys. When done you now have one cool key, a remote and key set, and a spare key. You could even sell your impress keyless unit and remotes on eBay..

Just got my eBay legacy key, awaiting housing. I noticed the trunk button and it made me want to hook it up to a mechanism that pushes my hatch open enough to keep opening by itself. I think my only challenge is hooking the mechanism up to the correct sedan trunk wires.

Just buy it from a dealership if you want it so bad, IMO.

They'll never be listed like that. You need to search the FCC ID. Then confirm that it is the correct one visually.
