powder coating
I have a 2001 Birch White Legacy GT. I love my wheels but I really want to get them powder coated in the same color as my car. Does anyone have any suggestions on where and how much this should cost?

I was going to say "Do a search in your local Forum," but your local forum is my local forum.
I know we've talked about it before, I'll dig it up... and I turned up nothing. I know a couple of guys have done it here in the Sound area. Ask over there, we'll get you hooked up. PS - Welcome to the club. A |

Powder coating is very simple. It doesn't require nearly the prep, or expertise, that painting does. I'd just call a few local paint shops and go with whoever gives you the best price.
Be aware, however, that the colors are limited. You won't be able to match the body color exactly and a not-quite-right white is much more noticable than a contrasting color. |

I looked in to having my wheels powder coated and I found a powdercoating shop in Mukilteo WA that has over 100 color choices and they quoted me $12 per wheel to sand blast off the original paint, $32 per wheel to powdercoat them in any color. That is less than $200 including tax for all 4 wheels. They said they must receive the wheels only, with tires and weights removed. They said about 4 day turn around. Or, for a charge of 40% more, they will do it in 24 hours. Very professional place, and much, much cheaper than buying a new wheel. I can't remember the name of the shop, but, like I said, it is located in Mukilteo on the Mukilteo Speedway. Good Luck, and I hope to see all you Legacy guys at a local Auto-x sometime soon.

I used to work at a powder coat shop, and those prices sound right. As for colors, they can get and match anything. There are thousands of colors.

Ken's Powder Coat on South Hill. I think he's on 76th Ave by the Fredrickson Plant. Does great work and is cheap! Did four wheels for me in black for $100.00.

I always wondered what happened if your wheel had a plastic center cap. Is that powdercoated to or does the item have to be metal?

I haven't had a lot of stuff powder coated - just my valve covers. I had them done at Art Brass in SoDo. They came very heavily reccomended to me from multiple sources, i-club, body shops, insurance agencies to name a few.
I'm not sure if they took to long, or if I was anxious b/c my engine was in a million pieces when I dropped them off. I was prolly anxious - it just felt like they took a little longer than I wanted (2 days if IRC). What I reccieved back from them was imaculate however. This is a very large production they have going, and they do a lot of custom work, lots of Harleys and car enthusiasts like us. They do _tons_ of metal work too - chrome etc. stuff you could probably care less about. But it adds a tremendous amount of creditability to the operation. In short these are very experience people you are working with. I would reccomend using them again - b/c the quality of what I had in the end was absolutely perfect. It would have been nice to get them back a little quicker (5 working days total turnaround on my covers), but I was very pleased in the end. My $0.02 -Sambo P.S. if you want to come up to Kirkland and look at the work they did on my covers you are welcome to. Just PM me. Or join us at the Wingdome on Tuesday (PM me, I might not make it there this week). See the NW thread for details. |

has to be metal - it's an electrostatic coating until it's baked.
I still contend you are going to have a bitch of a time matching a paint color with powder coat, especially a white. The pigments are totally different. |
