Default Wider wheels and tires in the rear

what does everyone think about wider wheels and tires in the back on a wrx? i was thinking about it but not too sure, does anyone have any pics? i was going to put 17x7.5 in the front and 17x9 in rear. the other thing i thought about too is that i wouldnt be able to rotate my tires.

What about the Porsche 911 Turbo? It runs a staggered setup on AWD. I think as long as you kept the diameters the same you'd be okay.

its almost impossible to get the tires to match up in side wall height. and running different side wall types is bad.

sidewall is affected on tire width. crazy huh.

i even think in the owners manual it warns about this.

I suspect that it's because the engine (most of the weight) is at the rear of the car.

If anything, you would probably want the wider tires in the front. Our cars handle more like FWD cars with all the weight in the front, and some FWD guys have good success with a staggered setup where the wider tires are in the front.

I don't have the manual with me, it has specs on how close the diameter needs to be. It might be interesting to do the math, something like a 245/40-17 and 225/45-17 are actually very close in diameter.

I know there are guys that run larger front than rear for autocross, in the setup listed above, 245 front and 225 rear. This was on a GC8 where it's hard to fit much in the rear without modifcation and only for autocross. I don't think you'd want to run like that for street use. You would never want to run larger tires in the rear on our cars.

I'm guessing that he is primarily concerned with appearance here.

I personally don't think you'll get much appearance-wise with wider rears - it's not like we have a 911 that has huge rear fender flares. You'll probably just end up with rear wheels that stick out more than the fronts. Our cars were styled/designed with equally sized wheels in mind, so it probably won't look right with un-equal wheels.

Also, I don't know who makes a 17x7.5 and a 17x9 in the same design and the correct fitment for a WRX. You may have to try 17x7 and 18x8, which could look dorky.

i am aware my car is not RWD, i was asking opinions i do know of a wrx with a set up somehwhat like that but its pushing like 500 hp. the wheels i was looking at came in those sizes so it crossed my mind, but im not going through with it. ive got some upgrades, just the basics...up-pipe, downpipe and catback exhaust....the wheels i was looking at are 5Zigen FN-01R.

911 turbo is predominantly a rear wheel drive 5/95 torque split by default. I'm not sure what kind of tire setup a skyline have.
and yes it is also due to the weight being in the rear as mentioned by another poster.

I wouldn't recommend having different sized rims front to rear, but chicks driving a rex, now there's a winning combination!

with the understeer you got already with the awd, i would opt to have less traction on the rear so that you car can actually turn.
