Post Question on turbo for new WRX

So, I visited the official WRX site and the specs state that the turbo puts out a whopping 13.5psi! Wow, that's a helluva lotta boost for a stock turbo.

So, I'm asking since the stock boost is alread at such a high setting, can the stock EJ20 engine handle anymore when adding on a simple chip to increase boost?

Sure can...just make sure you tune everything else right though.

Remember there are guys in the club who are running STOCK high compression EJ25 turbos that are boosting at more than 14psi. Oh wait, is it only one person? LOL...

While I've never tested the new WRX, I would say that the engine is not your weak link here...it's the turbo. If you increase boost to say...20psi, you'll most likely be running in a very poor efficiency point on the turbo's compressor map.

High intake charges will result, and while you will make more horsepower, it will not be healthy horsepower. High intake charges lead first to knock sensors taking your power away and then to detonation.

Maybe 2-3 psi of boost would be a reasonable increase...and the engine can almost certainly handle that.

Sorry this isn't a very solid answer to your question...you'll have to wait until more people have tested the new WRX for a definitive response. See ya

car and driver said its a mitu turbo and not a IHI.

Hi guys..

Chances are its a TD (Mitsu) turbo...

Only the STI's get the IHI turbos... but who knows with the US WRX

The engines seem to be good upto apoint... But I agree with Sean.. the turbos are undersized.. the boost will drop off at high revs...

Now thats very interesting about the turbo selection. I have actually been trying to find out what cars used what turbos, and the Mistu turbo on everything but STI seems to contradict what I have found. I heard that it was just Ver. II and Ver. III that used the Mitsu turbo, then everything after that used IHI. Course now that I think about it, this info could be true as well, because it doesn't really address any of the non-STI cars or the Impreza GT's.

Any insight on this Jay_UK?

I Just ordered a 2002 WRX sedan today, and they told me that it is a mitsh turbo.

The new US WRX seems to peak at 13.5 psi and drop to like 8 or 9 by redline

Computer controlled wastegate I _think_. Less stress on the internals. Not quite sure.

That's one possibility, that the boost drops by design. The other likely one is that the turbo is undersized for the application.

Kevin -- Boyle's law (or something like that) ... Pressure is inversely proportional to flow. At higher engine speeds, the pressure drops because the turbo has reached its max rpm while the engine rpm increases.

It is also easier on the transmission, which is the weakest part on all of are cars (Over seas and here)

I had a 90 Eclipse GSX before the 2.5RS and the turbo on that car was good for about 16 psi, although it was only safe to go to 14 psi with out any modifications to the fuel system. I also know that many owners of 2nd gen Eclipses upgraded to 16G turbos and those were good for 18 psi. So, while its only a guess, if the engines are both 2L and are running similar compression, then IF the new WRX hits a max of 13.5 and tapers off near redline, then I'd guess its smaller than a 16G...but I don't know what that is.
