Default 2.5 RS engine idleing not so good

hey iwas looking at a 2000 Impreza 2.5 RS with 41,000 miles on it, i almost bought it but the engine when it was idleing at low revs, it was sputtering and didnt sound good at all, almost stalled out, is this just a problem that can be fixed with a good ole tune up? (spark plugs changed, etc..) or is it a major problem, im thinkin it might be a burned valve but is this thing common with the subie engines? cause i talked to a dealer and the guy said he had the same thing on his outback sport and said that it could be the valves and stuff but i dunno, just curius

Default valves

come on now,i ve never heard anything bad about the valves, before you start condeming an internal engine problem, look for some more obvious things like plugs, fuel filter and or ****ty gas, it could have a burnt coil or a bad plug wire, look for basic stuff, to me it sounds like you got a miss somewhere, does the check engine light come on?

Start with the little stuff...
If you haven't had a tune up in a while that can certainly cause your car to run poorly. It's pretty much the first step I recomend to everyone who's car just isn't running right...

Maybe an O2 sensor, it sounds like that to me. Check all the connections on you spark wires, make sure it isnt dirty or corroded.

I can almost guarentee you it is a bad o2 sensor. I got the 40,000 miles and guess what? After $250, and a rip-off auto repair place, I took it to subaru, and they confirmed my last suspician. Bad o2 sensor. even though it was not throwing the code for it. But in the 3 months I drove it like that, it threw every other code in the book. check here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=422964

It will confirm it for you. $80 shipped from www.subaruparts.com.

$100 from the dealer and around $80-130 for them to install it. Took me 20 minutes and 1 wrench. (and some anti-sieze)

it could also be something as simple as a loose, or disconnected vacuum hose. Mine have come off before.

I wouldn't garentee anything...
symptoms can appear differently to different people, and describing them is a whole different ball game. Do you have a CEL?
