Sport Manual Trans and Diff - Fluid Change
I'm at about 33k miles now in the 3 years I've owned the my Sport M/T Baja.
Looking over the maintenance schedules I've done everything required so far, including brake fluid and coolant changes. Now if I'm reading the schedules right there is no recommended replacement interval for the Transmission and Rear Diff oils under normal duty service, but there are 15k mile replacement intervals under severe duty. Traditionally severe duty services are usually about 1/2 of normal. So I was thinking of replacing both just for good measure. Thoughts on that? Too conservative, no big deal, I'm nutz you guys have all changed it already? I was just going to go with the M1 75/90 (not to start an argument over that either). Thoughts?

my dealer said to do the rear diff and let the trans go. So i did the rear diff at 30k (along with the other 30k stuff) and I kept on driving. I am at 44k and my fluid still looks new. I am going to revist this at 50k and if it is still good then 60k is most likely where I will draw the line.
just my 2 cents. |

Thanks for that input.
Turns out I'm heading to my little bros place tomorrow - about 100 miles each way so I don't go often. And with the forecast calling for rain and some snow, I'm figuring on taking the Baja instead of one of the bikes. Why is this significant - cause he's got a 6 car detached garage with lift. See where I'm going with this? So I have to decide if I want to change one or both of those fluids. I guess I could CHECK the trans fluid and see what it "looks" like, not that it would tell me much if it's clear - doesn't mean it's not starting to break-down viscosity wise. But sounds like 1 vote - DO THE DIFF! (easy enough, hell, I'll feel guilty throwing it on the lift for JUST that. Thanks for the data point though. Anyone else? |

On my turbo I change the trans and diff every 30k.
On the recommendation of the tech who rebuilt my trans, I am now using Amsoil. I had been using Royal Purple. Does the Sport 5sd need the large torx bit for the drain plug? |

You know, at around 120k miles (?..) or so.. I had to replace my radiator. Up until then I had been keeping check on my ATF fluid levels/smell/color by the sticj. It looked fine and smelled fine - like new!
Now, upon removing the radiator I had to disconnect the ATF cooler lines. When I did so, a brown icky sludge drooled out. Yuck!! Definitly not the same quality of liquid I was seeing on the stick. Fluid + filter was promptly changed that week. Not flushed, only changed. If I had 60k miles or less and I had the extra cash I'd go through with a flush (flush will run you twice the amount in fluid costs, and they ain't cheap @ around $10 a quart! what is it - 8 quarts? 11? yeah. ouch) Just some advice. My turbo'd 2.5l 4EAT tranny was fine before and after. Personally I think you're going overboard. I'd consider changing them after 60k miles. Somewhere between 60-100k miles. But that's just me. |

Dunno on the torx bit haven't crawled under to check yet, you know what size, I've got some pretty big Torx head monster bits in my kit? Quote:
2 votes to change diff - 1 vote to leave diff alone? Damn, I don't even NEED a lift to change the diff, I'd feel stupid pulling it in JUST for that. Thanks for the thoughts guys, leaving soon. |

^^ IIRC the Torx is a T70. I had to order it as it was not available locally.
