Default speedo problems? How do you check it? Looking for a “official” check

I think my speedo is messed up. It got me into some trouble the other day and either the cop screwed me royal or I am having an issue. Are there any shops that are board friendly who can “check” it out for me? The documentation is what I'm after, a 3mph discrepancy would put me perfect. Hit me up with a PM, I have some time to get this sorted out so… please help

I need whatever it takes for VA.
I was in a 70mph zone, cruze control on 76, cop wrote me for 82 which= me f'ed.
I didnt know that anything over 80 was such a big deal or I wouldnt have risked it.

I've spent many days in many different rental Subies in which we've installed a rally odo/computer into to generate Jemba notes. Each car errored exagerating speed (going slower than speedo reading). Being low milage rentals, these were the factory equipped wheel and tires.

Why would a judge accept any speedo calibration error document when it is so easy to get whatever % of error you want (practically) by just swapping tire diameters?

Its better than going down to court with just a (formerly) clean driving record. All the judge has to do is drop the mph by 2, or 3 to get to 79. Sigh, such a hassle for 12 over, especially when I wasn’t even going 12 over.

Virginia Defective Speedometer Defense
Virginia is one of the few states where a defective speedometer is a defense if you have received a Virginia speeding ticket. You can check yours between the mile markers on an interstate. If you think it is defective have it repaired by a certified mechanic and present his statement to the court.

However the judge has the authority to still find you guilty depending on the circumstances. The clerk of court may be able to tell you how he has ruled in similar cases.

before you bother going to a "shop" just check it yourself to see if it's "Off" or not. You can do this on any interstate with mile markers (all of them).

Time yourself over several miles at a steady speed and see if it matches your speedo. If you do 60, it's easy. One mile per minute.

Borrow a good GPS.

Mine STi reports 4-5 MPH "fast" compared to my garmin.

Like meridock says, borrow a GPS. If you can get one that has WAAS capabilities it should be VERY accurate. My garmin PDA says it's certified to +/-.1mph. In my STi at 60 MPH speedo reading I am really doing ~55, and 80MPH speedo reading is really ~73mph.

I used my GPS...

I'm off by 5mph at 65...

Speedo reads 65, but I'm really doing 60...
