Default 18G and 20G owners need help w/ shifting

Hey guys,

I'm heading to ETown tonight, and was wondering if you guys can help me a bit.
I was just wondering at what rpm range you guys shift at the track.

I still have the stock 5spd and stock slipping clutch. I don't know what I am going to trap today.
(My car is running on the 20G w/ external gate set up. )

I was thinking 1st till redline, 2nd and 3rd till about 6200's. My expectations w/ a slipping clutch w/out a launch, mid 13's at 106mph. What do you guys say?

you'll have to launch high to keep from bogging +5.5k. Not sure of your exact setup but for my car making peak hp at redline(& still making good torque as well), I'd shift at redline in every gear.

Let me post my detuned dyno plot. I was thinking to launch at about 5k. I have successfully launched well on 5k till I've decided to launce a bit more aggressively (close to 6k) and burned my clutch from slipping it too much. ARGH>

on 93octane you should be running 21-23psi depending on which intercooler you are running.

Your horsepower stays pretty flat all the way till redline, could use some more boost though (I'd say no less than 23 psi with that FMIC and turbo). Don't shift until redline with the current tune. During drag racing the guy with the highest average horsepower wins

I'm running stock tranny and clutch on my Greddy 18G w/ 2.5L and I shift at redline. Since I still have the stock drivetrain I just eased off but I was trapping 113-115 consistently!

I did try launching around 5k in 1 run but it was useless, clutch just slipped in 1st and 2nd

See~ I'm no expert in any kind of tuning. Basically you take the car to someone you think you can trust and have it tune. This is basically what happened to me. I don't know if timing is being pulled. I would expect my tuner to tell me this and say, hey listen this is what's going on w/ your ride.
I guess I got to talk to my tuner.

I would talk to him. also those numbers seem really low for a dynojet. i did a million times better than that with my 18g. look for yourself.

Its really not that choppy, look at the smoothness correction, its only set at 1. Most graphs you look at are set between 3 and 5. And the "dip" would not look so terrible had the smoothness been set higher. Did Junior tune your car? If so then I really wouldn't worry about it too much, he does great work.

I did [email protected] with a VF22 shifting at redline at a slower track (NED) You should get higher traps than that.

I ran like crap. My clutch couldn't handle the launch. Tried at lower RPMs and bogged and gave up on the run.
Second attempt launched, bogged, clutch slipped, ran a bad 60' trapped 102 w/ a 13.82.
I was shifting very slow, next week will try a different settings.
I'll try w/ higher RPM launches w/ fast shifting. I think I'll be at high 12's.

What bothers me the most is the previous tune done at "The Shop" my car came out w/ 347whp and 1 month later when I take my car to the Dynoday @ ICS it only ran 309whp.
I will take my car to the track again and see if I can improve my time. After that is done I'll talk to my tuner.

Normally I would agree with you but Ive been tuned on this dyno and with a smoothing of 0 my graph is flat. Go get your car checked out.

You cant compare dyno #'s from different dynos. I dyno'd 375whp at one place, then 205whp at another place less than two weeks later.

Thats funny. You seriously think you are gonna go out and run 1 second faster? You dont have the trap to run a high 12.

You will need to trap 104-106mph and hit at least a low 1.8 60' to get a 12.9.

We'll have to wait and see next week. My shifting was not the greatest. will practice my launch and will shift faster next time. Hope my clutch will last.

First off "the shops" dyno is jacked up big time, especially back when AL was tuning there. so you werent making 375whp . Second, your trap speed is not gonna change because you are not making the power you believe you are. thats why you are confused. its not the shifting or the launching, its the tuning and the car.

I do not understand why you are tracking the car when the clutch is slipping. Doesn't it just keep getting progressively worse over time, meaning that you cannot compare results?

FWIW, on my 18G setup I go to redline in 1st and 2nd. 6,750 in 3rd.
