06-07 Impreza Trunk Debadge Rebadge DIY
Photos and Text by: Kevin (DaWhiteScoob)

Special thanks to Drew (yesitsdrew5310) as I took some ideas from his outline as it was easy to read and follow.

Disclaimer:I can not be held responsible for the modifications you consciously decide to undertake nor for the results of doing so.

***Before attempting this "06-07 Impreza Trunk Debadge Rebadge DIY" please read the notes carefully that is located at the end!***

This modification was made to a 06’ Subaru Impreza.

I recently bought a Subaru "rabbit" badge to replace it with the OEM badge,

Tools Needed:
  • "I" Badge or Subaru "rabbit" badge (***Must be 3inches or larger in width to cover the holes*** see i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu132/DaWhiteScoob/Hood%20and%20Trunk/holemeasurement.jpg)
  • Fishing Line
  • Goo-Off or any other adhesive remover
  • Paper Towels
  • Micro-fiber cloth (recommended, easier removal of adhesive)
  • Painters tape (recommended, guide to put on new emblem)
  • Razer blade (optional, adhesive removal)
  • Hair dryer (optional, heat adhesive to remove easier)

Step 1: (Prep work)
Leaving your car out side in the sun or use a hair dryer to apply heat around the trunk badge.

Step 2: ("Cutting" the adhesive)
Take some fishing line and cut it about a foot long. Use the fishing line to "cut" the adhesive between the badge and trunk. You will not be able to "cut" all the adhesive only the areas that are in green and red in the picture below.

Step 3:
(Pulling the emblem off)
After "cutting" most of the adhesive between the trunk and badge, you will notice that you cant rotate the badge as it has two "spokes." Take the fishing line between the trunk and badge, put it on one side of the badge (green line in picture above) and slowly pull it towards you until you have enough room to grab the emblem's corner. While doing this, grab the edge of the emblem. While using your other hand grab the other side and pull gently towards you. You will see the adhesive stretching. Just keep on pulling until the adhesive rips off and the emblem is free.

Step 4: (Removing the adhesive)
Now that the emblem is off, you will see that some of the adhesive is still on the trunk. Use a hairdryer and blow it for 2 minutes until its hot
then use your finger to rub it off. Or using some goo-off or some other sticker/adhesive removal, spray it on the spot. Let it soak on the adhesive for a few seconds. Then take a paper towel and try to remove some of the adhesive off. Then repeat until it is completely off. (Has BALLS? If you have a steady hand and good eyes, a new razer blade can remove most of the adhesive.)(Taking a micro fiber cloth and scrubbing it off worked the best for me as it is rough and will not scratch the paint.) It is not any different than removing other badges

Step 5: (Clean for new adhesive)
This step is very important. In order to prepare the trunk for the new emblem, clean the trunk with clean water and new paper towels. Also check the inside of your trunk! Make sure the the area is completely dry and that there is no residue left behind from the goo-off or other sticker/adhesive remover. Skipping this step may case your emblem not adhere properly.

Step 6: (Setting a guide)
Using the painters tape as a guide. This will be easier to apply the emblem strait and in the center of the trunk. Take a long strip of the painters tap and put it below the green line. Then remove the tape where it is inside the red box. (Note: On my emblem I remove the tape so it was a 3/4 inch away from the holes.) This will show that the horizontal middle of the badge should be lined up on top of the tape to ensure that the badge would be centered and that it will cover the two holes in the trunk.

Step 7: (Apply new badge)
Take your time as you only can do this once! Using the guide, remove a little of the backing of the adhesive on one side. Using this side as the starting point, check your guids and apply it to the trunk. Then slowly remove the remanding of the backing and push it to place. Finally apply pressure to the whole emblem to ensure the adhesive is "flush" with the trunk. Step back and enjoy.

Note:
1) The badge that is used must be 3 inches or greater in width! If it is less than 3 inches, It will not cover the holes that are exposed from the original emblem.

2) This badge that was used in this DIY, "Subaru rabbit badge", is a little flexible (carbon fiber material) making it easier curve to the trunk.

3) Believe it or not, not all i emblems are the same size or shape! Some eBay sellers sell "front" and "rear" set of i emblems. The small one is 74mm x 45mm and the larger one is 84mm x 54mm. The larger one would be more similar size of the original emblem. It will cover the holes more and has a greater surface area for adhesive, but it may create larger gaps than the small one.

4)For users that are using the "hard plastic" I badges, there might be a very small gap between the trunk and emblem.

People that apply these to the front of their cars will layer the 3m adhesive to make full contact to the grill. I do not recommend layering 3m adhesive, I would sugest going to a hardware store (Lowes or Home Dept) and buying a 3M "foam" type adhesive tape or something that is thicker than the adhesive that comes with the emblem.

Or you can take some sand paper and match the curve to the trunk. Take a sheet sand paper and tape the edges to a full un-open 3liter cylinder shape soda bottle. Using the curve of the soda bottle, lightly sand the back of the badge in one direction until it has a similar curve to the trunk. This would be for someone that is really anal about details.

LOL Sorry, I merged multiple outlines together to make it easier to follow. Thanks Drew (yesitsdrew5310). I have his thread saved on my PC as I might do it future, but want to install a STi rear diffuser first as it's cheap $70 and looks awesome.

More pictures will come! You can even see it at the meet. I wished that I did not use the razer blade method as I have few very fine scratches but a little wax would fix that up. If you plan on doing this, I will tell you a method I learned with a micro-fiber cloth that works really well.

Also, Here is pictures from the behind of the OEM badge.

And, No the jig saw in the trunk was not required but was recommended! Just Kidding! LMAO

FIY: Those "spokes" that are behind the emblem are two different sizes and one is more oval than the other. I tried to put the OEM badge upside down, don't ask why because I do not know!

Size comparison OEM vs Small "I" (74mm x 45mm?)/Rabbit emblem.

Another picture for size comparison.

I'm not a fan of using goo-gone or any other cleaner like that on paint. What actually worked out quite well after razor blading most of the adhesive off was regular 87 octane gasoline on a microfiber rag. Cleaned it up really easy and as far as I know, doesn't damage the paint.

Thanks for the additional info... I was about to use some gas but was more scared about that ruining the paint than goo-off.

Have you tried paint thinner or any alcohol wipes on the paint? I used it on my old car and worked great for painting and adhesives but read that our car's paint is very thin.

Paint thinner is a huge no go because of the chemicals that it contains. A lot of them are/can be super harful to the clear coat if left on for more than a few seconds, plus the hard rubbing action that is taking place... Gas in my eyes is far better.

Not really that harsh from looking at the ingredients that make up thinner, but here is what happens after about 30~ seconds in a plastic drinking cup.

Do you want something that does that to a plastic on your clear coat? Yeah... I sure do not.

No problem!

I learned that thinner eats through plastic cups at work. I had about 200 bearings in a plastic cup and I poured thinner in there to clean them off before I repacked them in what I was working on. A minute later, I go to move the cup, the top of the cup comes right up and bearings go all over the shop floor. I was and then because I had to pick up 200 bearings by hand...

actually the easiest way for removing the adhesive is not using a towel etc. you will scratch the paint somehow

use a hairdryer and blow it for 2 minutes until its hot
then use your finger and rub it off
comes off smooth

You mean their is too much gap between the trunk and badge? Even with a thicker double sided tape? Can you take some pictures of the gap so I can add it to this thread, please.

^^^ That is what Im gonna try to do..The I Badge should fit perfectly in the chrome part of the oem subie emblem. Once I figure out how to remove the backing I will do it and take pics...I believe I have to drill some holes in the back of it.

Heat it up with a hair dryer and pry it apart.

Alright, what a process. I did the I emblem and it did not sit flush..you can see in attached pics. I then decided to paint my oem badge...I like this much better so I m sticking with it. It is sloppy in a few places but nothing you can see till upclose and it still looks better than the regular way..lol. If anyone is interested in my I badge let me know...there is some chrome flaking off, but you can paint it if you like. Just thought I d share...

Look good?? I just was not feeling the I badge...looked very cheap and "civic" like.

Don't like the I badge and don't like the sloppy stock badge. Props for actually doing it though. I'm too scared I'll eff it up even though I want my badge black and red.

Ehhhh i may consider doing it again, but Im ok with it. When Im bored I might redo the process again..LOL My badge was screwed up to begin with , had black marks in the chrome on the OEM badge so this is actually a step up! LOL

How did you remove the inner part of the badge? Our badge is two pieces instead of the one piece ones in the previous years? I want to paint the front badge as it is the right size.

Edit: Just read some posts above... I have to pry it apart. What would be the best "tool" to use to do this?

You have to drill a couple holes in the back,,,,heat up with a blow dryer, and push through.
