Default Arial Atoms now available in the US

..with the Ecotech.

The company has just finished testing the Yankee Atom in Arizona at General Motors’ proving grounds with a 2.0L, 245-hp Ecotec engine. GM engineers were on hand and reportedly mighty impressed by the little car’s trip to 60 that took only 2.8 seconds.

That number was apparently confirmed by Brammo Motorsports The available motors are:

GM Ecotec 2.2 Liter 140hp 150ft/lbs (Avail Q3 2006) $33,299.00
GM Ecotec 2.0 Liter 205hp 200 ft/lbs Supercharged $38,790.00
GM Ecotec 2.0 Liter 230hp 205ft/lbs Supercharged $39,950.00
GM Ecotec 2.0 Liter 245hp 215 ft/lbs Supercharged $41,110.00
GM Ecotec 2.0 Liter 300hp 250 ft/lbs Supercharged $46,500.00

Honda iVTEC 2.0 Liter 210hp 115 ft/lbs $37,140.00
Honda iVTEC 2.0 Liter 245hp 143ft/lbs Hondata ECU $39,140.00
Honda VTEC 2.0 Liter 300hp 163ft/lbs Supercharged $43,640.00

even though the GM motor will get you an extra 100 ft-lbs of torque for ~$3,000 more, i would still opt for the honda motor...

Hell, none of the engines should cost much...

And without the engine, how much for the rolling chassis? Probably a mint.

I'm just waiting for someone to put a 1,000 hp Ecotec in an Atom. That ought to be interesting.

not if the SRT has the factory boost button, that causes it to be lighter than hte Atom.

Talk about pointless.

I can't imagine it being able to use all of that power at ANY speed.

500 hp would be pushing it, too. The thing doesn't weigh jack.

For $42k I'd buy a new ecotec and con some Chassis-fab guy into building me a lightwieght rail with a steering wheel then paint it a funky color.

Which is why I said it would be interesting and didn't say that it would be smart or useful.

Yes, but it doesn't come with 300hp.

I like this move, I also find it funny that the GM 2.0L supercharged is faster than the Honda 2.0L Supercharged...

But, this car would still be alot faster than you'd ever need with the 2.2 eco

I'd rather have the Atom prototype's (and European Elise's) Rover K series motor. But since the machinery to make them is literally on a slow boat to China, the Ecotec is a good choice. It's common enough in Europe and the US to have some performance options available.

I wonder if the ecotech engine is a lot heavier then the Honda.

I doubt it.

GM *is* a car company. We lump a lot of criticism on them, but if Ariel decided to offer that engine line it's not because they SUCK. GM does know how to make some quality products... they just choose not to exercise that knowledge in pursuit of most of their retail models.

For some reason I used to think they'd be using a Toyota engine in the US version...

Although I like Honda engines, the Ecotech is pretty impressive. GM did their homework with this one. GM engineers even published a book on how to build a 1000 bhp version. The November 2005 issue of Racecar Engineering has a decent article about the Ecotech, though it does not mention the weight.

Did anyone else notice the torque discrepancy between the two top motors with the GM having nearly 100ft/lbs of torque more?

GM Ecotec 2.0 Liter 300hp 250 ft/lbs Supercharged $46,500.00
Honda VTEC 2.0 Liter 300hp 163ft/lbs Supercharged $43,640.00

-Biggly votes Ecotec

Yea, I'm not saying they suck or anything, I am just wondering why the Honda one would be more expensive then the Chevy one.
