That's the plug to make the CE light freak out... Okay, actually, I don't recall what it's for, but what I understand is it's supposed to be disconnected, and that's one of the things they do as part of the pre-delivery inspection.

Wait, this plug is a way to reset the ECU without the usual disconnect-battery-for-30-minutes-idle-car-for-20-more-minutes way? Is this too good to be true??

That freak'in plug is a total pain in my A--!!!!
Following some obscure advice I found while doing a search I pluged it together to whre it snapped together. Of course the whole car seemed to freak out! And since the plug was in such an akward position and because it was snapped together so tight it took me forever to get the thing apart. My poor car freaking out the whole time. The theroy at the time was that you could plug it together and the cd light would blink in a certain sequence, giving you a code that would basically tell you what is wrong with the car. Wrong. It turned out the reason I had the ce light to begin with was the o2 sensor, so it may or may not have recet the ecu. But I tell you this, I will deffinatly disconnect the battery everytime rather thatn mess around with that freak'in plug! I had to break it btw. |

ECU clear memory procedure is as follows:
1) With engine at operating temperature, turn engine off and place gear shift lever into park (auto transmission cars) 2) Locate the two ECU check connectors, for most cars they are located under the steering column and consist of a black plastic male and female connector, and a green male female connector. The exact location of the connectors varies with the different year models, but generally they are located under the steering column on the drivers side. With the ignition OFF connect black to black and green to green. 3) their exact location varies depending on the year model 4) Turn on ignition and cycle the gearshift lever from park to neutral and back to park (auto transmission), depress the accelerator pedal to full throttle and hold for a few seconds, and then release. Start engine and then drive for at least one minute, keeping road speed above 11 Km/h. (Ed. don't have to do the gear shift cycle in a manual car, only the auto) 5) At this point the check engine light should start to flash the all clear signal (steady 1/2 second interval flashes). If the check engine light does not flash, or indicates some other sequence, there is a fault present in the system, and should be professionally checked for necessary repairs. 6) the ecu is now clear and re set! |

So is there a way to get the code using tis method? Perhaps plugging them together and turning key to on and counting flashes?

Adrian, those instructions you have are for UK spec cars. As far as I could tell, there is only 1 black connector, not 2, so we can't do it that way.
My understanding of the plugs is that it causes the motor to go into an extreme lean run condition for short runs (i.e. loading onto/off of the ship for shipping the cars) to prevent gunking up the engine. This theory is confirmed with readings I got from the O2 sensor when I hooked the green plugs together. |

The dealer ship uses the green plug to trouble shoot your car for any problems. The blinks are codes. When the cars are ship to the usa its plugged in. When it gets to the dealer the look to make sure there are no problems. Dont plug it in to reset you ecu. Unplug your battery (-).

yeah that plug is to reset the ecu without disconnecting the battery. I saw it working under my dash and almost plugged it in but decided the plug looked too robust for it to have come unplugged... so i left it
