Default half axel dead after 43k

Well, I took my baja in today because I was getting a thunking noise when I was turning hard right under acceleration. I had gotten this on my old 90 Legacy sedan FWD when the half axels went out. They tested it out for about 4 hours and confirmed that the right front half axel is dead and needs replacement. Luckly I got the 100k warranty and it is covered. They have ordered a new one and will install it when it gets in.

Thats what mine is doing, but my mileage is around 16,800.I accelerate hard to the right alot more than the left.I started early on mine,i guess thats why it died so soon. Its hard to keep from doing it,i guess i'll have to slack off alittle so it will last longer but wheres the fun in that!

Well, they installed a replacement half axel last week, and it didn't fix the issue. They gave it back to me for the weekend so they can save on the rental. I brought it back yesterday and they gave me a ll bean 05 outback (dam that is nice, I really wish that they had a H6 baja. That would rock.). I was driving bythe dealiership, so I stopped by. They had been on hold with SOA for the last 45 minutes before I got there and SOA wants to do a lot more tests. But they were fairly positive that the tranny needs replacement. Just waiting to hear back.

the legacy outbacks make a clunking noise (at least mine did for the first 40k miles, and other posters had similar sounds) and it was attributed to the struts. Are you sure about the trans and axles? does it sound like a noise that should happen if you bootom out the car on railroad tracks or something? It would always happen in a turn with accel and was not a big deal. It just sounded scary, but i've never actually had a problem. It doesn't do it anymore though (60k miles now)...

on the baja it just started about a month ago (~40k) and never happened before that. It sounds a lot like what you are saying janikphoto. On my 90 Legacy the exact same noise and vibration in the petles was the half axels. And that is what the dealer thought it was as well and after replacing the half axel, it wasn't it. They checked the wheel berrings (all 4), and a lot of other tests on the system and they keep turning back to the trany. I have been having some other issues that I have been working with them as well on that, so that seems logical. I have been having problems with the trany over heating a lot. I have the auto/stick version.

well, trans shouldn't overheat. but a LOT of outback owners had that noise (i don't know if it's a lifelong thing, but i haven't heard it for a while), and it wasn't anything bad. But man, it freaked me out the first time I heard it. And hey, if you are getting new trans out of this deal, well, let them replace it!!! And the sound of dying half axles is more of a clicking noise than a clanking noise. At least if it is the bearings going out...

I've got a similar noise turning right under acceleration. The Service tech says "wheelspin" I say B.S. if so why do the tires squeal when turning left and front end thunk when turning right??? I am going to take a good look this weekend It sounds like something loose. Possibly motor mount? It sometimes does it from a stop going straight with hard acceleration, also from a hard turn with med. to light acceleration. The harder and faster the turn (the more the passenger side is unloaded) the more likely the noise. I think I hear it when going over bumps, but that could be my imagination.

Have any of you changed your transmission fluid? Some folks recommend it every 30k or so on automatics others don't -- just curious if the trans fluid might be at the root of some trans. issues. Subaru had notorious issues with the SVX transmission, perhaps they continue?

The issues discussed above, all automatics?

Trubobaja, they way you describe the soune sounds fimular. Do you feel thet vibration in the gas pettal? I feel it turning right under medeam to heavy accel now and when I hitt some bumpy roads here in the santa cruz mountians. I live up some roads that STI and other performance owners dream about.

02_forester, My fluid has been changed by the dealer at normal intervals. I am very familur with the SVX trany issues. Thay is why I had brought this up with the dealer so early, it started at about 7k and has been continuing since then and getting worse. The dealer I go to has the highest customer service ratings from owners in CA for the last 5 years. They really know their stuff about subies. You can ask them about any issues, and they will likely know about it already.

Yes, I do feel it there, but it has to be through the floorboard and not the pedal because the Baja is drive by wire throttle.

02_Forester:

Yes, sportshift automatic.

Wow! possible transmission failure at 14k miles

That is where I feel it. I thought it would be easier to describe as a response through the pedal. The throttle by wire was one of the major factors that I bought the baja for.

Bajanut, you must've been typing your last post while on one of those bumpy mountain roads that the sti guys dream about. I haven't seen so many unique spelling choices since I tried to write down a note while driving down the highway in heavy traffic (do NOT try this one yourself. I gave up writing after I decided my life was more important than my note).

I was always thinking it was either the body flexing and popping from a hard turn and that maybe a strut bar would help, or it was something in the struts that wasn't worn in yet. No proof tho back this up, but it was a heavy clanking sound that sounded like the strut towers or body panels around that area. and it is pretty thin sheet metal around that area...

Anything new to report? I'd really like to find the problem. I'm going to try another dealership service dept.

Well, I got a call yesterday and found out that they are now ordering a replacement transmission. SOA has had them jumping through a lot of hoops on it and they were getting fed up, so they told SOA to just make a decision and caulf up a transmission for me.

well, got the baja back today after they installed the new transmission. The car is so mutch smother than b4 and the thunking noise is now gone. Now just a wait and see game if the over heating issue is gone now as well. I would guess that it is because the tranny was replaced.

Are they going to troubleshoot the thing and let you know what the noise was?

don't know yet. My service advisor that has been working on this issue has been out, training and vacation and won't be back untill sometime next week. Last I heard is that it will be up to SOA for testing. But they are failry positive that it was the front diff that was binding up. I think that it was just a faulty tranny from the factory, that would explain the over heating issue. I think that it just over heated to many times.

Binding in the transmission can be caused by many things. Mostly it is caused by uneven tires and/or wear. (I am currently explaining this on another thread.) Usually what happens is the transfer clutches in the transmission start to bind due to lack of or thick fluid. Seeing your vehicle is new, they had the whole transmission replaced to test it out. On the older models, they can just replace the transfer clutches without replacing the whole tranny.

For those of you that have the same conditions, try this:

Get into an open area or parking lot. Turn the steering wheel ALL the way to one side and do about 5 complete circles. Turn the wheel so that the tires are straight and wait about a minute. Then turn the wheel all the way to the other side and do another 5 circles. Turn the wheel so that the tires are straight again. Drive straight a couple hundred feet. Then try turning like you would turn into a parking space. The condition should be gone or better. WHat happens is this heats up the fluid in the transfer clutches and it circulates better, helping the binding. (If it does, you can diagnose your own vehicle when you take it to the dealer)

The dealiership tried that and it didn't help, that is why SOA said to replace the tranny.
