Cleaning now that heads are off? And Valve adjust question?
Okay I have my heads off and they have been sent to be O-ringed. Now that the heads are off I see that there is alot of buidup on the pistons. How should I clean this up so that evertying is nice when I put it back together. I don't want a higher compression ratio due to deposits on the pistions.
I also have to adjust the valves when I put my cams and such back in (DOHC) and I woudn't mine some advice or pointers. I do have the Haynes manual to help me through it but any addition tips would be apprecited. Joshua

when I took off my heads, I bought some carb cleaner, and spray it on the pistons, let is sit for a few minutes, then scrub them down with a soft wire brush to make sure you don't scratch them..

Carbon buildups are normal. I think I've understood that if you use a misting spray bottle of water and spray the intake charge as it is running, you can actually cause the carbon to burn/come off.

I use break cleaner. That stuff gets anything off.
But honestly, you don;t need to worry about it uping your compression. Just get on it real hard a couple times and it will clear a lot of that away. |

Both Brake and Carb cleaner will work fine for the job. I prefer brake cleaner. Go ahead and spray it down best you can and wipe it off. Should get it good. I would even put a little motor oil back into each piston, just because that brake cleaner might take alot of the initial oil off of the cylinder wall.
As far as valve lash goes, I believe that you need to use an angled feeler guage. Unfortunately if you dont have one, they cost almost as much as the adjustment does itself. I suggest bringing the heads to any repair shop and having them adjust the valve lash there. I dont think they should charge you more than an hour (about 60 bucks) to do it, since you have the heads off, and the valve covers off. Hope that helps -Jake |
