Default Azenis Vs. RE070s Vs. R Compounds

Hey all,
Starting my shopping for an Auto-X tire. Looking to go for a dedicated one that will last me the season. I'm looking at the Azenis but I'm worried that they will only be marginally better than my old RE070's.
Does anyone have any comparisons between the Azenis and the RE070's? The other set that I'm looking at is going all out for a set of V700s or Victoracers. Will I see a huge gap between the performance of the Azenis/RE070's to a set of true R-Compounds?

Thanks all,

-- Steve

Steve, the general rule of thumb that you can use for approximating the performance comparison of Max performace tires (S-03, Pilot sport, etc), autox r-compound (Kumho, Hoosier, RA1, etc) and Azenis "cheater" type tires (Azenis, BFG KD's, etc) is:

Max perf < Azenis < R-compound.

Generally, most people will quote that azenis will net you about a second on average above max perf tires. R-compounds will net yet another second above azenis.

There are also disparities within a group as well. Take the R-compounds or example... Hoosier is generally faster by a slight margin than Kumho (and some people prefer the Kumho ecsta's to the victoracers and vice versa).

That may be true looking at the average for each category, but at the boundaries, there's virtually no difference. For example, there's not much between an Azenis and a 'slow' R-tire, like a Yokohama A032R-H. The Falken may even be faster. From what I've seen, there also isn't much between an S-03 or Kumho MX and an Azenis.

disagree! The S-03 is lightyears behind the Azenis. Unless of course, the Falkens get hot.

Great info here, still have so much to learn with all this stuff. I think what wistful meant was that the Azenis are better until they start getting greasy.

I think my choice is going to go to a set of heat cycled V700's.

Thanks again

I'm surprised no one has mentioned classing here.

Azenis' are an STX tire and one of the best. If you're concerned about the greasyness, take a bug sprayer with water in it and spray them off between runs.

For SM or Prepared class, get a better R-Compound tire and be done with it.

Scott, good points, and I'm still not sure what class I'm going to run. Debating between STU or ESP.

And Nino, you know you'll get a chance, just gotta get her ready for the season.

Of course you will! I use V700s (btw I purchased a slighly used set of v700 from jetfan8178, thanks!). Its definitely different! You don't have to push the car hard to get better times (compared to the RE070)...you just need to stay within traction limit. Go for 'em! Just be sure to stay smooth at first until you learn the tire's behaviour.

Heat cycling and shaving adds up to the price. Do you really need those? Me thinks that if you don't require 100% performance right from the start and that you pay attention to some basic recommendations, then you need not purchase those and may gain more usage.
