Default 86 GL-10 questions about tranny and air suspension

okay i just picked up a 86 gl-10t sedan for $175 off ebay.

now the problems the ring and pinion is bad and i guess i could just throw a tranny in, now what years are interchangeable with the car.

and second it has a buttom for air suspension. nothing happens when i press the button and what is it for.

JEff

PS anyother info about this car would be cool too. it has a sunroof, digital everything, so i'm guessing it was a top of the line for 86

The air suspension is probably shot, best bet is to unplug it (I think there is a module under the drivers seat or something.) Then just swap to normal GL coilovers/struts. I would probably just stick a new tranny in it. The 5 speed dual range trannys with a 3:90 ratio are a dime a dozen, just make sure to install a matching 3:90 rear diff.

Edit:

DONT trust the digital temp guage, you will overheat it a blow a headgasket... the question is just when. Install a secondary analog (autometer) temp guage.

G'Day,
1),take a white rag/cloth and pull the dipstick and give it wipe...
2),take a telescopic magnet, jam it down the d/stick hole.....
3),take a lawyer

Cheers

I would just make sure it goes into all the gears without too much work, but also not too easy... grab one out of a car with 250K or less and odds are its good. Its usually the autos that fall apart, not the 5 speeds. Mine has 296K on it

Thumbs up 80s Trim Lines

Hi,

I noticed you were questioning if your GL-10 was top of the line. It is

Here's the breakdown for 1985-89 (or whenever Subaru started using the name Loyale for this bodystyle):

DL - Base model, differentiated from GL and GL-10 by having regular old fashioned double square (high beam/low beam) headlights. It came mostly as a strippy, but you could get options for it, too.

GL - Mid-grade model, differentiated from DL by having the "newer" bigger solid composite headlights (like yours on your GL-10). It came with more goodies than the DL, and perhaps more color choices. I can't remember.

GL-10 - Subaru's high end trim, had power everything standard, nicelooking metal wheels (don't remember what they were - alloy or steel), same headlights as GL; it's kind of like saying a GL "plus" a lot more.

Note: This is based on what I remember - my parents' first Subaru was a 1985 GL wagon in Grace Beige. There isn't much difference between the 1985 and 1986 models, so if you want to do an engine or tranny swap, the two are very similar, if not the same.

sounds good guys i like any info i can get about the car. i'm goin to be installing the tranny this weekend.

then the next step for me to do is the inside. the guy that had and used the car was a dry waller so theres that white **** all over inside. i think i'm just goin to pull the seats out and steam clean the carpet and then the seats. if that doens't work i'll go find another set of seats from the junk yard in better shape

JEff

PS i have to get that rear sail side window, the idiot is too cheap to pay for a locksmith to get his keys out that he locked in

Hey Flowmastered, do you have any pics of your Grace Beige car? Is it a sedan or wagon? I'd love to see them. Ahh.. the memories

I was never crazy about Grace Beige myself, and wanted the folks to get a blue one (either Marina Blue or Midnight Blue), but they really liked that color, and it matched the trim on the house we lived in at the time. Our across the street neighbors had a brown one, same year. It was a really nice car though (until something happened and got totalled - years later Subaru recalled the car for the same reason it crashed).

Old pix and new pix are both good Wow yours is a 4WD? That's right... you've got the fancy GL-10  My parents' was a 2WD. Just to give you an idea, back in 1985, they spent $9100 on it new. The sticker was something over $12,000. Yours must have been $13-14,000 on the sticker at the time (I'm guessing). Them Subaroos was expensive!

i have a few parts that i am wanting to get rid of from an 87 gl10 wagon. i have 4 airstruts, 2 of which seem to work (front two) and I have an auto trans that seems to work well. if anybody needs a trans, let me know. i'll sell it cheap + shipping.. the struts might take a while since i haven't finished stripping the car yet..

you could use any 5spd tranny, it will fit the same on the mounts and the motor, but the non turbo units have a different axle spline, but you can switch axles to match. subarus are like legos
