Yeah I agree. This is my first 4 banger coming from v8 vehicles so if I must deal with no power I really want fuel economy in return.

Side question is it okay to put seat covers in the '12 impreza or does that interfere with the side airbags?

So for AWD it's still better than what I had, but I was hoping for more.

My subie is only getting an avg of 26mpg as a DD (3 mile city, 27 mile hwy commute) and I was really expecting to be at 30mpg or just barely over.

I recently read there's an ECM update available for the manual transmission, which I'll ask for during my 7,500 mile service next week and hope I can see some improvement. The only other factors I can see are the car just doesn't like cruising above 65mph, and the WV hills vs flat roads in OH, VA, etc.

I still like the car, but if I can get up to the 30mpg mark, I'll be happier.

Do you have any more info on this ECM update?

Ok, this one made me mad. I drove super conservative all week, light throttle starts, no AC (on a very humid week), cruise control when i get up to speed, 69 on the highway.
My computer said 31.4mpg

In reality it was 282 miles / 10.001 gallons

28.2 versus 31.4 is off by 11%, if i did my job with 11% inaccuracy, I'd be in jail.

Subaru, fix your stuff!!!

Default mileage

My 2012 Impreza is overly optimistic on mileage as well.
The dashboard ticker says 33 mpg when my plug in Scan Gauge says 30 mpg. The difference is you can calibrate Scan Gauge when you fill up and Subaru doesn't have a way to calibrate that I have found.

Question

I hope the low numbers posted here are not typical - I'll be finding out, as we just put down a deposit on a '13 Sport Premium CVT. I have an '04 Corolla with 200 kmiles that still gets over 40 mpg at 75 mph, but I use Amsoil and Tufoil throughout, and pump my tires up about 5 psi above recommended. My commute is about 100 miles of wide open interstate. I guess I'll be finding out. Has anyone done a comparison of the Subaru oil and Amsoil?

Additional note: Salesmen said the '13 gets "a couple of mpg" over the '12, but I haven't seen anything about engine mods - they're supposed to be identical in that respect, as far as I know. Since Subaru still has '12s to sell I'm not surprised they haven't announced if there has been a change, but we will see.

Interesting discussions here. I have not checked the "real world" MPG against what the computer is saying. Everything is pointing to "break in" period from what others are saying. Next week I will be doing a 700 round trip vacation. There will be 3 adults 200 pounds of gear, mostly highway with a mountain at the end. This is what I had purchased the car for, I will be sure to report any difference in my math VS the cars math

I am surprised that the mpg is not calculated off the engine diagnostics, like a ScanGauge does. All the other factory mpg gauges that I know of are. I was counting on the mpg the demo read out...

In my 2012 Impreza Sport Premium, Fuelly has me averaging 29.3 mpg, while the dashboard computer has me at 32.4 mpg. Who should I believe?

Fuelly will be as accurate as your odometer is.

The dash computer is overly optimistic.

This thread is filled with quite a few different findings. My wife's 2012 Impreza on about a 80mile trip, very few hills between point A and B and on cruise control at 70-75. I reset the Trip thing and it had me at 35.7ish by the time we got home. Including driving it like my WRX once we hit city streets. Thats just what the dash says though, dont know how on point it is. But I know she drove from el paso to Vegas and spent much less than the trip with my wrx a couple months prior. Thats all I really cared about lol

I've been concerned that it might actually be using the 99.9mpg that I get when coasting down hills in the calculations....with the amount that I drive the hills of PA, I've been getting 32mpg, but assume it to be closer to 29/30.

Subaru, fix your stuff!!!
The % off is apparently completely random in my experience. We've had 2 of our best tanks recently. The 2nd best, the gauge read 35.7mpg while the actual was a paltry 32.2 (over a 288.2 mile tank). Filled up yesterday with the gauge reading only 33.6mpg, and the calculated amount was 32.9! (over a 360.5 mile tank). The discrepancy is pretty astounding; between my first and second oil changes I didn't reset trip B - over about 4500 miles it read 31.2mpg - the actual calculated was right about 29mpg (added up each tank mpg, then divided by number of tanks - filled the car up both times immediately following the change).

Last time I checked on our new Fiat (about 4K miles on it) the discrepancy is 0.8mpg optimistic, or just a hair above 2%. Interestingly that car's EPA estimates are about 10% higher than the subaru (30/38 combined 33) and yet we are averaging 37.4mpg - almost 30% better than the subaru, and only a hair under the highway rating. We are still getting pretty good mpg with the subaru overall, but I wish it could be pulling similar results to the fiat.

If the comp is overoptimistic in mpg then im getting screwed. I commute 80 miles round trip for work daily and I avg per tank (according to the car) about 28mpg...considering I have put a little over 5k miles on the car I was expecting a bit better. If the car is telling me 28, I dont even want to know what im really getting -.- (25 or less? I do 75% of my driving on hwy, this is bullspit)

Individual tank calculations taken by dividing number of miles driven by the gallons needed to fill the tank afterwards can be inaccurate though too. The amount of gasoline put into the tank will vary by the speed the fuel is put in and the slope of the pad the car is sitting on, so you really have to average over a few tanks.

Yeah, if your computer says 28, you're likely getting about 25.4, which by any estimates, is unacceptable.

Please keep logging these, I'm mad the excuse given is AWD, my coworkers larger, heavier CX-5 AWD is getting 31.2 (calculated) with nearly my identical commute, and she pegs it at every light since she came from a V6 Lexus RX and was used to more power on tap.

You are not considering that the CX-5 is pretty much FWD almost all of the time and is only AWD if the front wheels slip. For all intents and purposes the cx-5 is fwd in dry weather.

I've been monitoring my MPG for ~8k Mi. (Currently with a roof rack)

The system MPG is always off, it seems to be based on a calculation that makes assumptions that may or may not be true. Some times I'm off as far as 4-5 MPG, but more often off 2 MPG.

I wish the system did a better job but it's not exactly high tech. Do I feel lied too? Not at all. MPG entirely depends on how you drive the car, I have gotten 36MPG actual but it did take effort.

Too many things factor into the MPG, so I stick to the simple fact that I KNOW I'm getting better mileage than I got in my old car. Even though I have AWD now.

I now have 4,500 miles on my 2012 Impreza Sport Premium. Took a trip with the family from Sacramento to Los Angeles. That's just over 800 miles round trip. With my family of 4 and our luggage that weighed about 75 lbs. I averaged 30 MPG. I drove at an average of about 75 MPH. I thought I would get at least 33-35 MPG but not even close. Maybe if I went 55 I would have done better but who drives 55 in a 70 MPH zone? Still disappointed in my mileage.

I recently took home a Impreza loaner. I have a 48 mile one way trip in rush hour traffic that sometimes take almost and hour and a half to get home.

Now, considering this vehicle has been driven by multiple people, with different driving styles, I still got 38 MPG. (It was 39 when I pulled into work, but I had to wait for the garbage truck to move so I could get in my parking spot and it dropped to 38 while I was idling.)

For about 25 of those miles, I was in stop and go traffic, going no more than 20 MPH for a few hundred feet at a time before stopping again. Once I was out of the rush hour section, my speed was between 60 and 75 MPH. I had a tourist stop dead in the middle of proceeding thru a light and I stomped on it to go around him. The MPG dropped to about 35, but slowly went up in the last 5 miles to home.

Getting the optimum MPG out of these cars greatly depends on how you drive. I am by no means a slow poke, and like to get on it once and a while, but can still maintain 25 MPG in my daily driver. (A 1996 Volvo 850 turbo with 200K + miles) My husband drives my car for 25 miles sometimes and it drops to under 20, and I can up his MPG when I drive his.

Also determining factors is the type of gas you use and what additives are added where you live.

I found that with the Impreza, once you get up to your desired speed, let off of the gas a little bit. You will still maintain the same the speed, but the MPG increases. If you constantly 'blip' the gas pedal or don't have a steady foot, the the MPG will suffer.

The same loaner has been returned with 21 MPG by a customer that drove it 200 miles. (We always reset it to show the customer what MPG they get.)

If you think something is wrong with your car, one way to check it is to let someone else drive it for a little while. See what gas mileage they get.

I go fishing by myself and get 31 to 32 at 65-70 MPH. Maybe I need to tone it down to 65. I can't drive under the limit, too many people give ya dirty looks.
