Default Is oil on spark plug boots normal?

This is the third time I have changed my plugs and I noticed a bit of oil in the spark plug hole. The plug boot seems to be sealing it away from dripping down into the plug itself, however, I don't remember this much oil the last two times I changed plugs.

I have not noticed any symptoms of burning or loss of oil, or any change in performance of the motor in general. I have seen pics other's engines and it looks like there may be oil there too, but I can't really tell.

Is this just a side-effect of having a flat-4 engine?

dstan nailed it. when you redo your valve cover gaskets, take care that you get the little rubber o-rings seated properly, or you'll have to do it all over again. Lesson learned on my old Accord. I'd HATE to have to do this twice on my subie--since you already have to do it twice

While you're in there, it might be a good time to check/adjust valve lash... Just a thought.

Upon researching, valve cover gasket makes a lot of sense. I didn't realize that there was also a spark plug gasket, so thanks!

This looks pretty easy to do, thanks for the link dstan!

Got the valve cover and spark plug gaskets at the dealership, but they say there are no rocker cover washers for a MY06 2.5i. Hopefully the rest of the writeup on rs25 is accurate to my model year.

Thanks again for the help, guys! On my 2.5i there are in fact no rocker cover washers, because the bolts are outside the gasket, thus there is no need for them.

Getting everything out was pretty easy, but I ended up having to remove the fuel rail guard to get the valve cover back in. Otherwise it was a straightforward process. Cost about $65 in parts total (from the dealership).

Just to let you know, Rockauto has a little kit with valve cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets, and the little rubber grommets that go into the bolts holes. Got it for something like $30 shipped. Quality Felpro gaskets. I would highly recommend.

I just saw the same thing today. I took the plug boots off to see if there was water in them. Instead I found oil. It was just at the top of the boot. There was enough there to drip.

I was looking in the first place because the car(2004 Impreza) just went through a flooded street, and now it does not run. It turns over, and will run for small bits of time, but acts like a cylinder isn't firing. If I put it in gear it dies.
