wideband o2 location question
Are there any drawbacks/advantages to putting the wideband sensor in the uppipe since there is already a bung there for it? Or is it just a bad idea because of decreased life of the sensor due to heat? any input is appreciated, thanks.

What do the instructions to your wideband say?

Read post 2. Instructions trump internet engineer opinions and here's a hint....an uppipe is pre-turbo AKA not an exhaust pipe.

Yea read the instructions, also be sure to clock it somewhere between the 9 and 3 position, the closer to 12 the better for condensation reasons. Condensation can damage the sensor so you want it in a position where condensation won't pool on the sensor after shut down.
just to clarify (so as not to confuse the OP) an up-pipe is technically an exhaust pipe, the fact that it is pre-turbine doesn't change that it is still an exhaust conducting pipe. And you could technically measure the 02 there as the composition shouldn't change after it spins the turbine side (in fact i've seen narrow bands reading at the manifold on some turbo cars). However I highly doubt that it would be a good location to measure at with a wideband. Last edited by J-hop; 02-02-2013 at 07:37 PM. |

Put one in each exhaust runner on the manifold, that way you know the AFR of all cylinders.

Found the instructions: pre turbo could cause erroneous readings due to pressure and premature sensor failure due to heat. And yes the up-pipe would be part of the exhaust as it is connected to the exhaust manifold. Thanks for your input guys.
