Default anyone learn how to drive stick on a new sti?

just curious, I did. I drove a few different cars prior to it I knew what I was doing. Embrassing if you stall, happened once or twice haha. Only reason I learned on it was my dad sold his truck which was suppose to be my learner car. Then I couldn't afford to get a dumper to learn on then get an STi. Call me crazy but I did what I had to do. Anyone else learn on a new car STi especially?

i learned on the 5MT WRX...

it's an especially tricky clutch if you have little experience...but after 1 week i was comfortably driving around the neighborhood, and after about 3 weeks i was on the road/highway, and after one month i was nailing the toughest hills around town.

about a year and two months later, i can honestly say i'm an adequate standard driver and it'll be a long time before i buy another automatic transmission vehicle.

good luck, and take it easy until you're comfortable.

well, i didn't learn on an sti, but i did learn to drive stick on an '82 skyline when i was abroad. don't fool yourself, it was a straight 6 cylinder diesel that you could start while idling in second gear. the trick for me was making the jump from shifting with my left hand, to shifting with my right back here on the wrx. they don't flip the trannys there so 1st is up and away and you shift toward yourself. It's just nice to finally have something with a little get up and go now but God rest the soul of the skyline.

My Dad (he had a cast iron stomach) taught me to drive, many many, years ago, when I was 16 by telling me to bring it up as fast as I dared... when he saw I could handle it, without fear, he took me into Boston's Chinatown in a snowstorm during Chinese New Year... city driving is a piece of cake for me now.

I was taught stick 30 odd years ago by a boyfriend. He pulled over onto the breakdown lane of a major highway, switched seats and told me to go for it. I was never so scared in my life... I went for it... driving any car has never scared me after that.

This is somewhat off subject but I'm teaching my girlfriend to drive stick in my WRX. I'm teaching her stick so that when we make it home from the bar safe she can drive my stick.

It isn't any fun (teaching her). My WRX clutch just doesn't like her and I think she feels the same. Thought this was an amusing anecdote for this thread. No offense to our invaluable female members or anyone else (disclaimer).

yeah, I have learned on my STI... I've put 800 miles on it.. all learning stick.

I still stall it every so often or over rev it.

Mostly, I have the toughest time finding 5th gear. It is just so damn difficult.

The clutch on my o2 wagon has a tricky engagement, i thought it was unique to my car. Guess not.

My ex girlfriends brother did. Bought it new and learned standard on it. It was pretty funny. Always knew when he was coming/going. But he's got it down now I think.

Yeah the clutch is strange I've had it for a month only been driving it for about a week and a half I work a lot don't get a chance to do it everyday and it sucks but I try my best I figured it out just don't trust myself yet. Kinda new/scary experience so much to think about when you are learning haha.

Vampyr haha I know man, fifth gear is so far over you pretty much just have to throw it over there. I know exactly what you are talking about and sixth is down and to the right slightly. I have the shifting down just getting going is all I need to improve on.

I had 2 quick lessons in my friend's Altima before I got my STi, and what a difference. So for the most part, yeah I learned on my STi. I feel bad for my car cause it has gone through the abuse I did learning on it, and I taught my friend to drive stick on too before she picked up her Forester XT earlier this year.

Didn't learn on my STi or my WRX, but I will say shifting in the STi is a DREAM compared to the WRX. I always thought I was doing something wrong with the WRX. The STi is cake. The torque/synchros helped alot.

I give big props to those learning for the first time on a WRX. It has got to be tough.

I learned stick for the most part on my WRX. Originally I had learned it briefly when I was 15 and had my learners permit. But after 2 months, we sold the Toyota pickup with a 5 speed for a Fullsize Chevy, and I went for close to 5 years not touching a manual transmission until I got the 04. Subarus have the reputation of having a very tempermental clutch for those not used to driving them, but I was able to drive mine with no problem after logging 300 miles on the car.

Now the car almost has 60,000 miles still on the original clutch, and I'm shocked its still holding up. I thought that due to my lack of skill during the first 300 miles that I would have had to swap the clutch out by now.

i didnt learn how to drive stick on my wrx but it was basically the same since i havent driven clutch for like a year and a half prior, but it was smooth for me, when i first learned was in my crx, my ****in pops put me right on route 1 and said drive without even showing me the basics and i didnt even have a license at the time, he just told me to drive, i stalled out soo bad at a light that my car wouldnt start, i had to wait like 5 minutes than it started moving again, a lot of people behind me were PISSED. But after lookin back, i think that was the best way to learn how to drive stick due to the pressure, i love pressure

It is.

I learned on my bro's Saturn Ion but even that had better torque and less bogging compared tomine (and by less bogging I mean no bogging). Now, the clutch and gear changing sucked on those, but that's another issue.

I dunno, I have a good friend with an 03 and he's trying to burn out his clutch so as to warrant a replacement so anyone who wants to learn learns on his car. With me as an instructor though, I've had three or so people who had never driven stick before drive perfectly in the WRX. His clutch is not in good shape either, so its even trickier than a healthy stock clutch. I dunno, I guess hondas are just so damn easy to drive that a wrx may seem impossible to learn on in comparison.

I severely apologize if I am resurrecting a dead thread. I pretty much know how to drive a manual for the most part, but had never driven an STi up until yesterday when I test drove a 2015. I had a hard time with making it stall quite a few times out of first gear. Would anyone say that is fairly normal for never have driven an STi with their clutch and still being fairly new at driving a manual? And would I have an issue learning/getting used to the 2015 STI if I purchased the car?

Don't these topics get locked or something? But when I first learned to drive, 2-3 weeks before my '15 WRX shipped (LOL) my friend taught me on his modded FXT. I got the hang of it alright, but when I got my '15 WRX i stalled and bunny hopped for like 2 weeks straight before I got the hang of it. So ... Idk if it'll help, but I did test drive an Si (many months after i've been driving my WRX) and I felt that if I had driven that first, it woulda been a really easy car to learn to drive. but then again, i could just have a jaded opinion.
