I fragged 3rd in my 06 wrx. I've been looking at the RA and the LGT gears to swap in. This is my DD however I am running 400ish wtq. I'm looking for the most budget friendly option as I think a 6mt swap is out of my budget by a long shot. I don't abuse my trans, I would like to be able to drag it once in awhile, but that's very much secondary to something DD friendly but strong enough to not really worry about.

that long final drive on them 06-07...

I tell people if they can go 6spd, they should. '07+ STi tends to be more ideal for most average users.

If not then PPG. cryo treated should help prolong the life.

Isn't the final drive on the 07+ STi box actually 3.54?

The tranny itself is a 3.900. The transfer gear is 1.1:1 so the rear diff must be a 3.545.

This brings me to a question. Is there a way to get the final drive to be 3.545 ? I have an 05 six speed with 07 2nd,3rd,and 4th gears. Still not tall enough. Is there a 3.545 ring and pinion that can be used in the transmission along with the 07 rear diff ?

Simply put, no. You're stuck with a 3.90FD, and from my understanding (I'm at work which means my brain is off, correct me if I'm wrong here) using a 3.90FD with a 1.1:1 transfer gear and 3.545 rear end will not change anything.

Exactly. I would have to change the ring and pinion in the transmission to 3.54, leave it 1:1, and change the rear to 3.54. Just didn't know if that was a possibility

Change the gear ratios to taller ones. If you don't have funds for it, .... that's going to be tough. You can also rev the engine higher. What gears did you want taller? Are the current gears not tall enough or did you wanted a taller 6th?

PM Matt to see if he can make you a ring and pinion gear for your 6spd

Hello all. I'm looking for some advice. I have an 02 wrx, running 215/70/16 tires (which have yet to be driven on since the process is taking a little longer than I thought) as my winter setup. I run 235/40/17 in good weather. I've been researching different transmissions that would help get the car moving for the large tires, and wouldn't completely kill my gas milage on my summer set. I'd like to keep it a manual. From what I can tell, I need to get rid of the 3.9 FD and go with a 4.11 or a 4.44. Any suggestions on what vehicles I should pull from, or would it be easier to disassemble mine and change out a few things?

'04-'07 LGT 5spd. They would be 4.111. The newer ones are 3.900. Makes for a decent gearset. The JDM Ver-3-6 run a 4.444, which in turn makes the gearing feel very much like say a '00 2.5RS in speed and gear spacing.

You can change out your tranny's guts as well so you can start out fresh. Change your FD and also your transfer gear and rear diff to match.

The Outback XT 5spd would be nice to grab. Perfect tranny. The WRX SHOULD have gotten this tranny.
3.166 / 1.882 / 1.296 / 0.972 / 0.738 / 4.444FD

Thanks everyone. The only question left is the axle compatibility. I know that the trans and rear diffs bolt right on, but axles from vehicle to vehicle vary with lenght and spline count. Any suggestions there?

FXT bits will be a direct swap.

Ok. What about the Legacy GT and the Outback XT? Will the axles cross over there as well?

Yes, but you will have to transfer over the speed gear and sensor. Otherwise bolt on with matching rear.

LGT/OBXT have stronger gears than any WRX/FXT tranny, so it's the best and easiest 5MT option for increased strength.

I found an 06 FXT full drivetrain that is somewhat local. I could get it all for under $1000. As long as what everyone here is saying about the axles, I think I'll go that direction. I took a quick look at the outback and legacy forums. Transmissions are few and far between. My local u-pull-it places don't have cars that new.

Another question since I didn't think about the speed sensor. Since I'm running larger tires, the speedo/odom is off. Would the 06 FXT sensor work in the wrx? If so, that might help correct the difference.

You shouldn't have to change anything at all if it's from the FXT. The speed gear thingy in the tranny is for the 4.444FD. Now if you change just the FD of your WRX tranny to a 4.444, you need the FXT's speed gear thingy so it'll read speed correctly.

Should guy's who run the JDM Ver5 STi RA 4.444 trannies worry about running the correct speed? No because the tranny already has the correct speed gear in the tranny. The speed sensor is just the sensor. There are slight differences in the GC8 models in Version 3-6 but all the newer ones that still uses a speed sensor will work. For 5spds, I can use a '99 Impreza speed sensor on a '04 WRX. They are the same sensor.

I don't know if this has been answered already and i apologize in advance if it is. Anyway is there a teeth width difference for the jdm v5 and fxt with the 4.44 FD?

Alright guys, finally getting back into doing stuff to my car. I currently have LGT 1-2 with a 4.444 FD. Set up works great. Basically 1st gear is the same between the wrx gears and a 3.9 and LGT 1-2 and 4.444s. The other 4 all have much lower top speeds. However the shifting is much more linear between gears.

Here is my dilemma though. I have tried both the wrx and the FXT speedo gear and both are off. wrx is off by about 13% and the FXT is off by about 7%. The FXT speedo is still off becuase the FXT runs 215/60/16 which has a diameter of 26.1 inches. The 235/40/17 I am running has a diameter of 24.4 inches. So does anyone have any recommendations on what speedo gear out to get. I have no problems pulling down the transmission again, just want this right as it makes tuning a nightmare.

And recalibration is not an option as this time because the speedo and the ecu both work off different wires from the sensor from waht information I have gathered. And i have not found the variable to adjust the speedo in any of the tuning software I have tried.

Easiest fix: get different tires.

The tires still have alot of meat on them. And if i go any bigger it will defeat the purpose of lowing the FD and/or the purpose of low profile tires

Well then your next option is to give Tacoma speedometer a call and see if they can help you out.

Just a little more info:
I have no choice but to go with a LGT gearset installed into my wrx trans case. Turns out the LGT trans won't bolt up. I want to keep the 4.11 final drive. I know I will need the speed sensor gear.
Questions: What else would I need to get the correct final drive swapped out? Can I use a 00/01 rear diff (since it is 4.11 final drive, and has a VLSD) and use my stock wrx axles?
