Maintance Question on 98 Legacy L
I went to get a free oil change today at the dealer and they said the timing belt, a/c drive belt need be replace. They also said the right rear O ring is leaking oil and theres a seal near the valves thats leaking oil as well.
My question is does this sound like a load of BS to you or is it normal stuff for a 9 year old legacy 2.2l with 91,XXX miles?

Timing belt should be changed every 60k miles on your car. Do you know when it was last changed? If it was at 60k miles like it was supposed to, you don't have to do it again until 120k. If you missed 60k, you're pretty far overdue.
You can visually inspect the AC drive belt for any cracks/wear - you only have to pop the hood to do that and verify. If you have an oil leak you should be able to verify that yourself too - but you'll have to crawl under the car |

I went for a "free oil change" and they came back at me with a list of all these amazing things they were going to do to make my 96 L run better.
I would talk with some friends and get your car looked at by a recommended mechanic. Free oil changes are never really free. |

Well I check the oil everyother time I fill the gas tank. It did look alittle lower than normal.

I *think* you can safely go 90K between timing belt changes on the 97-99 2.2, but if the belt hasn't been changed yet, you are overdue for a new one. Since this is an "interference" motor, you are best off not questing it, and getting it done properly.
Everything else you can put off for a while. The timing belt on your car is a "must do" item, however. I have 190K on my '96 Legacy 2.2 and no information on when, if ever, my timing belt has been changed. Yeah, I figure I am on borrowed time, but being a "non-interference" motor, I figure I can keep putting it off until it finally lets go. |

Well, I got the belts replace. I picked up my car 2 nights ago and when I went out to go to work yesterday...BAM 5 new scratches on the hood and driver's side fender. I have an "appointment" to take it back tomorrow and have them look at it. Im not leaving there till I get some money back or my hood and fender repainted for no cost. The time I was in before this for an oil change they spilled oil on the bumper cover and fender. Only reason I kept going there was the oil changes were "free."

I noticed them the next morning and called immediately. All I know is they will never get another penny from me in the service department. Their sales department is a whole nother story. They are great.
