Cool Toluene & Xylene: Where to buy it in Orange County?

Can anyone tell me where I can find Toluene and/or Xylene at a good price in the orange county area? I'm wanting to buy it in 5 gallon containers.

Sounds like you are looking for a octane boost. I know that toulene is sold at paint stores. Not sure of the purity, but you may want to check it out.

Thumbs up Serious… yes.

I’ve made my own race gas for years when I raced water-craft and road raced motorcycles. But that was over five years ago. Things have changed and the stuff is hard to find now, at a decent price anyway. I’m checking with the local paint stores this morning. You could buy a 5 gallon pail at Home Depot (of either one) for around $20.00 five years ago…….. not anymore.

The purity they sell at a paint store can't be good for the motor. That stuff is dangerous too. Don't inhale!
I really do wonder if the solvent grade would be adequate.
This info from the OSHA site:

Toluene is used to make chemicals (e.g., benzene, toluene diisocyanate, benzoic acid), explosives, dyes and many other compounds. Used as a solvent for inks, paints, lacquers, resins, cleaners, glues and adhesives. Found in gasoline and aviation fuel.

Toluene is a clear, colourless liquid with a benzene-like odour. It is a FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOUR. The liquid can accumulate static charge by flow or agitation. The vapour is heavier than air and may spread long distances and distant ignition and flashback are possible. Liquid can float on water and may travel to distant locations and/or spread fire. Toluene can decompose at high temperatures forming toxic gases. Closed containers may rupture and explode in heat of fire. Toluene is harmful if inhaled or swallowed and is a central nervous system depressant. The vapour may cause headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion and incoordination. Toluene causes skin and eye irritation. It is an aspiration hazard and swallowing or vomiting of the liquid may result in aspiration into the lungs.

Toluene is also known as methylbenzene, methylbenzol, phenylmethane, and tolučne.

Cool Yes... be carefull. Its paint thinner.

“The purity they sell at a paint store can't be good for the motor.”

If it say's 100% Toluene or Xylene, that’s what it is. As long as you’re not buying a product that is “based” on the chemical your fine. As far as safety is concerned, common sense, which some don’t have, and your fine. Besides, I’m a licensed Haz-Mat handler.

Now back to the info I need, anyone know where to get the stuff cheap in small quantities?

Not to mention that both chemical have been proven to cause cancer.

When I am around those I usually wear a respirator with cartridges for porganic solvents.
[Where's my head... that should be organic solvents. Crikey!]
