I had just read about Jeff Perrin's EZ30 turbo build and swap into a WRX, and thought that it might be a cool option. It might ultimately be great if the engine were built to make 700 or so hp. It is smooth, sounds great and the low end torque and quick spool should be evident, but what you said is correct. It would have saved a lot of money, a lot of work and be 50 lb lighter with an STI engine. My understanding is that it would not need to come apart to make that power and a stock computer could have been used. I am glad that the details of using an EZ30 6 cyl have been worked out for people that may want that option, but the EJ is the more reasonable choice at this power level. So I guess my ignorance is the main reason -lol! I know more about Subarus now than when I started, but have a lot to learn.

Worked on wheel tubs today. The rear fender design on this car makes them very easy compared to most, but they are still tedious the first time. Bent a piece of 3003 aluminum to make a mold, then layed up 4 layers of carbon. Each side took 1 yard of carbon cloth ~ $30/yd. The bottom half is attached to the centerbody. The top half will be attached to the tail, but it is not bonded in yet. With these in the tires can't pick up rocks and throw them into the radiator and intercooler and the sidepods won't fill up with road crap.

Guess the inner fenders should be centrally lined with thin rubber sheet or something to protect the carbon...

Wheel tubs almost done. Took 2 lineal yards to be clear - roll is 50 inches wide, so 36 x 50 = 1 lineal yard. Used the extra bit for a top brace of the bottom tub part.

The bottom brace is a piece of carbon tube that somebody gave me. Made small triangular sections out of lightweight plywood to join the flat parts at right angles to flat parts with epoxy. Will add carbon layups later when I have the body off - takes 2 people and I'm alone today...

Note the conventional coilover unit. Just temporary...

What size radiator did you use? I am still trying to figure that one out for my build.

Thanks

Are you using stainless for your cooling lines?

There are some simple calcs (rule of thumb kind of work) and then some complex calcs (values you probably won't have) to sizing a radiator.
If you look on FSAE.com, you can find some pointers.

I'm quite anxiously waiting to see this car's finished design. I feel like I'm only seeing sectio.s of an entire picture LOL

No. They are all aluminum. Lighter, easier to bend and bead, match the material in the radiator and engine.

Griffin Radiator has been very helpful over the years. Tell them hp and use and they suggest a solution. Ambient temps, airflow in and out, water flow path and volume - so many variables... I try to overdo it rather than optimize it F1 style. Never had any real problems - hope this isn't a first time -lol.

Thanks for the FSAE.com link. Some good brains there. One guy wrote a program for radiator sizing that you can use. Even if it is not perfect, I'm still impressed...

Thanks Jdogma. I love Griffin. They even helped us figure out the best size for this...

No worries. A bunch of us FSAE alums are out floating about. I just don't have the time to go through all the details.

I'm guessing its a swamp buggy thing ( i forgot what they are actually called )

This build is sick. I wish I had the time and skills to form carbon fiber like that.

Motion picture wind machine, truck mounted. Although at gas stations when asked I sometimes tell them the wheels fold up once you drive into the water.

Airboat making wind, also Griffin radiator.

Put tail lights on the car. Brake lights now only. Will add resistor to use them as running lamps and flasher to use them as turn signals too. Wire is inside the edge of the endplate and comes out under the tail. Also added a side Gurney to the endplate, which should help the diffuser that isn't there yet...

Thought it might be interesting since there are no photos with other cars for reference, to give dimensions relative to some other cars.

Carma Wolf WB 102.5 in, L 172.0 in, W 79, Ht 43.0 in, Wt ~1800 (hoping for this, but has not been weighed)

'13 Subaru WRX WB 103.3 in, L 180.3 in, W 70.7, Ht 58.1 in, Wt ~3240, 3384 (STI)

'02 Subaru WRX WB 99.4 in, L 173.4 in, W 68, Ht 57 in, WT ~ 3100

'13 Porsche 911 Turbo WB 96.5 in, L 177.4 in, W 74, Ht 51.2 in, Wt 3509 (AWD)

Corvette C6 WB 105.7 in, L 174.6 in W 72.6, 75.9 for Z06, in Ht 49.1 in, Wt ~3150

Porsche and Vette width are without mirrors.

Default Niprotek

Updated Niprotek suspension units:
-ride height is set via pressurization (could be a pump controlled in cockpit)

-spring rate is adjusted via large hex nut

for ref: with ride height close to design, pressure in rear is ~260 psi, pressure in front is ~ 180 psi.

for damping there are 3 speed adjustments for rebound and 2 for compression

Build is easier now, there are fewer parts, and they are even lighter. Very easy to set up, adjust and comprehend!

Thanks for the encouragement from everybody!

Just wanted to post that I recently emailed Bremar in Australia asking if they made a 6 speed mid engined conversion, and they said " just wanted to let you know that since your email last month, I've had two more enquiries about a conversion kit for the STi 6 speed, so I'm going to have another look into what's involved in developing the 6 speed parts. It's not a definite goer yet, but I'm going to try and get hold of a box and figure out what needs doing. I'll need to do the sums, but it's likely that we'll need a minimum order before we can put the parts into production, so if you know of others who would be seriously interested in this kit, get them to drop me a line and I can start building a waiting list."
Their email is [email protected]
