8" puddle, bad vent solenoid, should it cost $900 to get fixed? :Resolved happily
I drove through some water 8" puddle, got a CEL light.
Had it diagnosed as bad vent control solenoid (05 RS wagon, 33k). Said it would be 900 to fix, and was not under warrenty. I am question the warrenty part right now, but should it cost 900 to get a vent control solenoid replaced ? I did a quick google while waiting and saw it for like $300 for the part on online parts store and paid my diagnostic fee and walked out pretty upset. I am going to my regular dealer shouls i expect about the same ? thx for any info ptrout***********

And yeah if the puddle caused the damage then no its not under warranty... not a defective part... see about your auto insurance perhaps. |

opps sorry, I meant say I am not questioning the warranty part.
I called them back and they said they didn't discuss price of parts over the phone. And only gave me a labor rate of $95 per hour. So thats as much info can get thx jay |

^^^^Not exactly honost, but probably your best bet if you want to pay less. You're not lying if you just walk in and say 'my CEL is on, fix it' then simply do you best to avoid situations where you might have to mention any 'puddle'.

Yes but if the part has failed due to being damaged from the pot hole then no matter who looks at it, it will still look the same way.
so $95 in labor? thats 6 hours approx in labor and $300 for the part? Thats a lot and something isn't adding up. |

My beef with all that would be them saying that the car cannot handle a puddle. The car should be able to handle water that does not involve an outboard motor. Take it to your regular dealer and tell them the light came on. If they ask the conditions tell them it was wet. You were not driving off road (I am guessing on that), and IMO, the part should not have failed becase of a little water (driving across a creek or something like that would be different).

You guys realise he said it was an 8 inch deep puddle right? leaves me wondering what else could have been damaged.

I guess the key here would be a better understanding of exactly how much water was driven through. When I read the 8" puddle bit, I think of a small puddle maybe 4-5' across that he hit, but it could have been 8" deep for 150' and he was out having fun splashing around in it. I have hit pretty deep standing water before and have never had any issue. Heck, I drove an Outback across a creek to the point water came up over the hood and through the air vents (forgot that we were close enough to the ocean that high tide affected water levels...creek raised 18" in about 2 hours). The car ran fine after that and never threw a CE light the entire time I had it.

I live in westchester NY, and recently we had a lot of rain. And 8" puddle is common on many roadways during heavy rain. Saw Mill, Bronx River, Hutch etc.. I have driven through patches of deep puddle through out that day, infact probably on and off dozen or so times.
I am not trying to be an ass, I like to think I have a good relationship with my dealership. I have never felt ripped off, and I am not trying to get away with something. If it in fact is my fault, so be it. However Having paid out $212 for diagnosis at another dealership (at the time I didn't know if CEL was serious so went to nearest to where I was ie, not my normal dealership). Then so hav them comeback with $900 estimate seemed a bit harsh. I just wanted to know before right off this particular dealership as a rip-off, I was just tryin to be more informed. I tried to google general price for parts just to get an idea, and maybe some feedback from you guys, as to if this was in the ball park. I was called backed the original dealership and they said they would take off the disgnosis fee from the final bill, if I came back to them to get it taken care off. However other factors (tell me not to go through insurance) just seemed suspect. I really do appricaite the help, and I guess I ll have to be even more careful when driving through puddles in the future. If some someone has a ball park figure for this kind of repair and would rather PM, please I would like to walk in my next appointment a bit more informed. I sitll think on the warranty issue, that a car should be able to handle 8" puddles. thanks again jay |

driving in wet weather is normal, but apparently puddles (particularly deep ones) are where the line to abuse is apparently crossed. i suppose this is because when you say "drove through a puddle" you couldve drove through a small puddle in wet weather or you couldve been doing your best colin mccrae impression through a creek (no offense to anybody who may have done the latter) good luck, and let us know how everything goes. Well Took it today my normal dealship in NJ (30 miles away, since I moved)
I told them exactly what happened, I said drove through puddle then CEL. They took the car, and I sat in the waiting room. 1 hr later, I am told I am all set. The rep,(she was hot), said the solenoid problem, the tech diagnosed water in the system(vent solenoid cone, and lines). They flushed and cleaned all the connectors and and solenoid was working again. She billed me for 1/2 labor rate and I walked out for $50. Having paid originally $200 for just diagnosis at the other dealership, I am writing them off as ripoff. But I am happy I was able to walk out of there hassle free and problems fixed. Thx guys for the info. jay |

honestly i wouldnt have mentioned anything, just said CEL came on..
i mean we have subarus they have ads with their cars going through puddles in the woods and stufff... and driving in the rain is going to cause a CEL? and also YOU DONT REALLY KNOW ITS CAUSE of the puddle. i mean technically speaking, we all assume its from the puddle, caus after u hit it the CEL came on, but we dont know if it was broken already from other things i dont know i just hate dealerships and i just hate it when people get screwed for stuff we shouldnt pay for - Danny |
