Default Keep / sell the wrx

I have a 2002 with 72k miles on it. Everything is in great condition but what else, the transmission. My fourth gear synchro is shot and will cost 1000 to drop the tranny and fix it. Would it be worth dropping the tranny or should I sell it and go off and buy a different subaru?

Me personally I love my wrx! I would do anything to keep it on the road, but I do all the work to anything myself to, which saves a lot of money! As most of you know!

Try ending a sentence with punctuation other than an exclamation mark.

OP: a new car will cost more than $1K.

just fix it. if you really love the car then that is the better decision. to me, spending a grand to fix it sounds a hell of a lot better than losing money on selling it, and then trying to go find another car you can afford.

I would just fix it unless you intend to to buy a newer wrx. Look at it this way, your car only has 72k miles and its an 02. It should have a very long life left if taken care of properly. If you go to sell it your going to take a pretty big hit because it needs repairs.

I know it sucks to drop a stack, but its probably the best thing to do.

at 72k you r looking at new struts sooner than later. that will cost anywhere from 350$ to over a grand for oem replacement, pending on if u do the labor or not. most other major maintenances will be at 100k+. it comes down to what u want, either a higher mileage car with maintenace costs or a new car with nothing but a monthly payment. this is all assuming u r not modding it out.

im at 145k n havent had any major problems n costs. new radiator, struts, timing belt, general tune ups, had a power steering leek. going to replace the clutch n fw at the end of the year. all in all its been nice not having payments for the last six years n i like working on it myself.

i cant comment on the trans issue ur having cuz i havent had an issue. ive seen ppl post good n bad bout the trans. seems mostly those with mods r running into poblems.

if ur not into ur third or fourth set of tires by now, that'll be up soon. of course, like stated all ready, youll have to put some $ into it to get a fair shake on the sale.

think about if ur trading in or going private. trading at dealer will be a loss. private sale might get u what its worth if ur trans is fixed. lots to consider.

fix or sell, ur still gonna have to shell out some dough unless u just sell at an adjusted cost. buying new means shelling out a downpayment n then a monthly bill for three to five.

This. Answer it. It might save you $1000. And be SURE to state what kind/brand/flavor of trans fluid was used....if you don't know say so.

I have no idea when it was last changed, what trans fluid should I get, because I love this car and want to save it if possible.

I would just find a used transmission in the fs section for $5-900 and drop it in. Then sell yours for a few hundred to someone looking for a transmission to rebuild.

My advice:

Dump whatever fluid you have now.
Refill case with Redline lightweight shockproof.
Good ebay deal on how much you need with here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RED-LINE-LIG...9c5041&vxp=mtr

Dump in 3 qts, then add/check/add/check until full.

Odds are it will cure all ills. If not, you wasted $XX on fluid and now you know your synchro is 100% toast and you need to use the expensive solution.

Any more opinions on this idea? I like it but before 70 dollars are spent I'd like to know

Shifting into fourth gear at high rpms, like 4500+ from third to fourth.

I feel a grinding in the shifter and it makes a loud bite sound.

Even if you plan to sell the car, it still makes sense to fix it. Anyone buying the car as-is will beat you down on price by more than the $1000 it will cost to fix.

^ This. I just watched an episode of Wheeler Dealers, where he knocked £500 of the buy price of the car (a Bond Bug, think Reliant Robin ) because of some grinding. The replacement transmission cost £75
