If it was over filled during filling, it would have leaked out while they put the bolt back in.
There is a vent on the top, but normally that's accompanied by a hose that will terminate some where and allow air in and out - not fluid and it wont be at the diff its self.

If its cracked. That would be my only concern. Maybe they didnt torque the bolt down enough and its seeping.

Take a picture of it and try to get it off the ground.

Beauty of a rear diff is they are easy to re-seal if in fact that's what happened.

the vent is actually right on top of the dif with no hose at all. if the vent is plugged it could cause a leak. also if the drain plug was over tightened it could have cracked the cover and cause a slow leak. seen that one happen before

a diff is pretty well impossible to overfill. However when you drain it, the oil does spill onto the case. Because the oil wasn't changed very long ago, I would wipe down the case nice and clean (checking for any obvious cracks or something) and monitor it over a decent amount of time. It may be that the oil from draining has coated the case and now it has gotten dirty making it really obvious.

If it is cracked, talk to hpl. I'm sure they stand behind their work repair it.

If it is the gasket, then i would say that it is a warranty item and subaru would cover it. Pretty sure you're still in the powertrain warranty period...?

I think what you're seeing is the residue of the oil that was drained. Like suggested above, clean your differential. After a couple days look at it and see if it's still leaking.

When I changed my Differential fluid I used a bit of liquid gasket on the threads of the drain plug to make sure it's sealed good. Maybe they skipped that part/also didn't torque it enough.

Hi guys thnx for the reply. I went to shop who did the oil diff change. They cleaned around it. But then after a day of driving i can see oil creeping down again and its really coming from the vent. And i have a major power train warranty until 2016. And i have service sched this friday at subaru dealer. I can see some drips at my parking lot. I assuming the vent breather is broken or something. I dont see it any cracks or from the gasket. If it was ill be seeing alot more oil leaks. Ill update u guys on friday. I hope they will warranty it.

Definetely sounds like they over filled it a bit at the shop. Nothing to worry about. Im a mechanic for Ford and honestly about 60% of escapes come from the factory with to much rear diff fluid in them.

we have taken out the filler plug (in this case, the rear differential temp sensor) to check the level when he brought it back for his concern, there is no point to just clean it even tho he didn't make any appointment. There was only a tiny little bit is coming out just like normal.

I would assume, when you said "they over filled it a bit", is at least .3L on top of the standard 1L to 1.1L capacity on the STi; If it does, it should be leaking since 53k but not until very recently (owner claims that it was dry when he installed / adjusted his coilovers a week ago, then after some hard driving during the week he noticed oil leak ~ I do track my STi so I know it's not normal.

Eric from HBL Autosports.

ps: he came in when shop was very busy, so we were only checking it on the level ground outside the shop. He is supposed to bring it back on Thur for inspection (which is today) but I guess if he wants to try warranty now (as far as I know major powertrain only covers if differential breaks, but not when it leaks; who knows, maybe he gets a very nice mechanic + service advisor to do all the paper work

Can happen if you drive car hard and the rear diff fluid is too thin. Basically mists out at higher speeds (160kph+)

Mine leaked out a lot from the vent tube when I was using motylgear. Switched to extra-s and it's not as bad but still leaks

Have you tried thicker fluid Arthur? For the power you are putting down, everything might be a little bit different :P
