When I bought my US 2007 STI Ltd in Calif., I had to pay an extra 6% duty for a Japanese car to bring it into Canada and register it in BC. This is still the case. Otherwise, I think the cost is just a bit more for the equiv. equipment. I think I saved about $4,000 over buying an STI in Vancouver- however, there were no Ltd for sale in Canada.

I do really like the redesign of both, but no Leggy wagon, no care! Had to stick with a new Impreza instead of what i actually wanted to buy!

Explain to me why the Forester Limited gets H.I.D.s while the Outback does not? Who was the marketing genius product planner that came up with that?
Cost cost cost. People were/are willing to pay more for the Touring Forester for the extras it has and they were able to justify HIDs on that one; and it still comes in less than an Outback(if just barely). Start putting all that on the Outback and the price would have put it out of competition. Let's see how much the price increases for the Limiteds now that there are memory seats, and the rear A/C vents.

Out of competition with what? My dad sold his Audi Allroad to buy the Outback, he wouldn't have blinked an eye at the extra $$. The whole point is the Outback is Subaru's most premium vehicle, yet the more lowly Forester is available with higher specs in some areas. A luxury buyer considering a Subaru is going to want both the buttery smooth H6 drivetrain and the HID headlights.

Nothing wrong with lots of luxury options on a car with a pedestrian brand. Have you seen the spec sheet of a Focus Titanium?

Well, the only cars I consider "competition" with the Outback are the Crosstour, the Venza, and the Edge. Most everything else is more expensive. I agree that there are plenty of people willing to pay, but how many is plenty? I think there are a lot of things Subaru should make as an option or accessory. I would sure love for someone at SOA(or anyone on here who understands it) to explain to me why some things couldn't be custom ordered from the factory, like interior/exterior color combinations. If someone was willing to wait, and even pay, why not allow it?

Well if you are talking about actual custom stuff, it is because just offering that type of stuff is expensive. There is overhead associated with every available option and part. Once sold, Subuaru still need to support it and warranty it, so if someone tears their custom pink leather or cracks a whale bone shift knob, Subaru can't just order another one like a normal item. This would lead to high replacement part cost and longer waits for customers. Eventually options will add the the bottom line of every car, not just the cars that have them.

A better question might be "Why can't I get a white Subaru with a black interior". That really just comes down to manufacturing, and when costs need to go down, so does flexibility

Not really custom. I have an accessory BOOK from Japan when I was there on 08. I ask to bring some, just some of what was in that book. They were/are all OEM things. I did talk to one of the guys responsible for our accessories at the Impreza training and some of it was explained to me. Again, it comes down to cost for the most part.

I always considered the Venza more expensive. Looking closer, it's almost 25% more expensive, in general. Edge and Crosstour aren't really in the ballpark, to me. Edge AWD's starting price 40% higher than Outback and Crosstour AWD's almost 50%! (These are 2012 numbers.)

Outback AWD MSRP range $23,295 - $31,695
Venza AWD MSRP range $28,875 - $37,915
Edge AWD MSRP range $32,930 - $38,960
Crosstour AWD MSRP range $34,440 - $36,540

Take AWD out of the equation, and Outback's still considerably cheaper, even with standard AWD... something like 20% cheaper than the cheapest Venza, IIRC.

If you can afford Venza, Edge or Crosstour, I can see cross-shopping Outback to save some serious money. Same reason Subaru appeals to some Euro-brand owners.

^^^ You have to use transaction prices for a fair comparison. Edge gets discounted heavily and Outback not so much (at least in my region). Crosstour had a lot of incentives last time I checked since it is not selling well. I have been cross shopping these vehicles for a while. I made the mistake of showing Subaru AWD (comparison) video to my wife. She doesn't want to buy any other brand AWD/4WD vehicle. So we will be probably getting an Outback. I am leery of getting a 2013 because of the new engine and second generation CVT. Might wait for 2014MY so that all the kinks will be worked out by then.

The engine is already being used in the Forester for 2 years and the Impreza already has the "2nd generation" Subaru CVT.

Also if you wait to 2014MY, in 2015 an ALL NEW Outback will likely be coming up for 2015MY...

^^^ But this will be the first implementation of FB25 with second gen CVT. I certainly won't buy 2015MY because it will be first year for ALL NEW Outback. I tend to keep my cars for 10~15 years, so I stay away from first year redesigned cars.

2016MY then

Fuji Heavy Industries is on of the pioneers in CVT tech and they license a lot of tech out to other companies. I wouldn't be too concerned about the first CVT connected to a FB25 blowing up or anything.

And nothing came of the first year of the Lineartronic CVT!

I looked up the KBB "Fair Purchase Price" for the lowest trim AWD/Auto available for each (except Outback... I chose Premium rather than Base). Outback $24.7k, Venza $27.9k, Edge $31.8k, Crosstour $32.3k.

The 2013 will probably be fine, but I suppose the 2014 would be an even safer bet. Sometimes toward the end of runs, though, I think the cost-cutters find ways to shave expenses by cutting corners. But then again, Subaru usually keeps adding value by upping the feature content, too, such as via a Special Edition package. *shrug* Lots of things to weigh.

that one was a bit misleading, the front was not an open diff or else no way that car would have been able to go up the ramp with one wheel only traction,

back to the topic, is this what your talking about? i guess to each his own but that still looks huge and ugly to me, maybe your right the previous version is more feminine , but so is every other exotic car, and why do we give the female attribute to our cars?
to me a curvy sexy women is always more appealing then some power lifting butch which the new legacy reminds me of btw
Yes that one, but in world rally blue with STi limited lip and wheels.

If you don't see one in person, you just don't understand. I also prefered the old one... up until seeing the new wagons in person. Saw so many in Japan.

They are much more aggressive and muscular. Maybe feminine is too generous to describe the previous legacy. It was not feminine like a Porsche or Ferrari, but rather weak, low presence.

Kind of like the New WRX/STi vs GD. Makes mines look so outdated, when parked next to a 2011/2012
