Sorry, but I disagree with your skepticism. Everyone keeps bringing up the Mustang II when they talk about the 2015 model; Ford won't make that mistake again. Is everyone going to like it? No, but Ford is doing what's right for their company and making a product that will appeal to Europeans as well, since it's going global. I have pretty high hopes for this car. However, if they do blow it, I'll pick up a like-new 2013 GT and have fun with that.

Spied: Next-Gen 2015 Ford Mustang Prototype Goes For A Spin

Quote:
Is this the next-gen 2015 Ford Mustang? Not in its complete, finished form, it isn't - but our spy photographer believes this is an early test mule, designed to allow engineers to evaluate and validate the new Mustang's mechanical bits before its bodywork is finalized.

How so? The bodywork is certainly one clue. Though it looks like a standard 2013 Mustang GT, the mile-wide panel gaps, missing roof channel fillers (and, our photographer suggests, wider roof seam channels, to boot), odd cover over the fuel filler, and mutilated rear diffuser all suggest this car's skin is merely a temporary wrapper.

What's beneath the surface? That remains a little more mystery. It's widely believed the 2015 Ford Mustang will be the first to receive an independent rear suspension - something that was once planned for the current-generation car, but deemed too expensive by executives then in charge. Motor Trend suggests this new suspension setup may be an evolution of the so-called Control Blade trailing-arm setup employed on many cars across Ford's global lineup, and perhaps most similar to that used in the rear-wheel-drive Falcon sold in Australia.

What's underhood? The 5.0-liter badges may not be a ploy to throw us off, as we've heard the so-called Coyote V-8 will continue to serve in high-performance Mustangs going forward. There's a chance that engine could receive direct fuel injection going forward, but the bigger news lies with smaller offerings. Reports and rumors regarding the future of the V-6 are conflicted: some say it's dead in the water, while others suggest the present 3.7-liter V-6 will soldier on. Certainly, the 2015 Ford Mustang will be one of the first in decades to offer a four-cylinder offer. Either a 2.3- or a 2.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost I-4 is expected to join the lineup, but its status is still unknown. Some say the turbo-four will function as a new base engine, while others suggest it will instead be an option, perhaps as part of a new SVO-like package.

What's for certain is that the 2015 Ford Mustang's exterior will turn a new page - not only for the model line itself, but for Ford altogether. In an interview with Automobile earlier this year, Hau Thai-Thang - Ford's vice president of global product development - confirmed the next-generation Mustang will adopt Ford's Kinetic 2.0 styling language, which was previewed with the Evos concept and used to shape the new 2013 Fusion sedan.
Does that mean it will ditch all its traditional retro-ish Mustang cues in favor of Ford's latest look? Hardly. "We don't think the two [looks] are mutually exclusive," he said. Thai-Tang instead suggested the new Mustang's new sheetmetal will "move the Mustang forward" while adopting Ford's new "family look" - something the present car admittedly lacks.

Though details surrounding the 2015 Ford Mustang are still somewhat shrouded in secrecy, don't expect that mystery to last all that much longer. The very first Mustang officially launched at the 1964 New York Auto Show, and it's widely believed the new 2015 Mustang will be rolled out in front of press and public alike at the 2014 New York Auto Show - just in time to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Can't wait for more details on the 2015. Hopefully, the price doesn't go up much for a GT.

Probably an IRS test mule to make sure they get the geometry down before production.

There's no reason to believe that the 5.0, an engine they just spent millions to develop, is going to be dropped by 2015. If Ford did, they'd be throwing away a ton of R&D and an engine that's future-proofed for at least the next generation.

Heres an article on the IRS: http://www.leftlanenews.com/ford-mustang-2015.html

Ford will take its Mustang properly into the 21st century when the ponycar is redesigned for 2015, and we now know that a far more sophisticated suspension setup will also be part of the package.

Over the last few days, spies around Detroit have nabbed a black Mustang test mule running around. While the Mustang’s body was identical to the recently-refreshed 2013, an independent rear suspension was lurking underneath. The current Mustang boasts a solid axle that is rugged and simple – but also heavy and harder to adapt to curvy roads.

The newly independent suspension should allow for more degrees of wheel camber (a solid axle with camber is broken). In addition, the setup should allow for a vast improvement in rough road ride quality, which fits with Ford’s goal of taking the Mustang global for its next generation. Our spy included two photos of the current Mustang, which will allow you to compare its solid axle setup to the new independent kit in the 2015.

It’s unclear if the independent suspension will be offered on all Mustangs or if it will only be reserved for the GT – or even the next-generation GT500. Ford has only once offered an independent rear setup on the Mustang – for the 1994-2002-era SVT Cobra.

Underhood, the Mustang should retain updated versions of its current 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8, but a boosted four-cylinder is also likely to be part of the picture.

Styling department
Ford’s next-generation Mustang will reportedly ditch its retro-styling in favor of a new design inspired by the all-new Fusion sedan.

Ford successfully emulated the styling of the 1964 Mustang when it redesigned the iconic pony car for 2005, but buyers have since cooled on the Mustang’s retro look. Ford sold 166,530 units of the Mustang in 2006, but just 70,438 Mustangs found new homes in 2011, in part because of increased competition from Dodge and Chevrolet. As such Ford has decided to give the Mustang a fresh look for the 2015 model year.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the next Mustang will adopt many of the styling cues found on the new Fusion in a bid to attract younger buyers. Those that have seen the 2015 Mustang say it looks nearly identical to the Evos concept and has a distinct Aston Martin flair to it.

Although the Mustang is in line for a major overhaul, it will retain a few of its current design cues. Those in-the-know say the car new will keep its shark-nosed grille and round headlights.

No word on what engines might power the 2015 Mustang, but we’ve heard both turbocharged four and six-cylinder engines could be on tap.

Interesting they are ditching the retro syling! I've always liked how the fusion looked so it will be interesting to see what its going to look like.

Keep the shark-nose and round lights, but take cues from the Evos/New Fusion?

Hmmm...

I have no problem with it taking some design cues from the new Fusion.

2013 Fusion front:

Also, that article is wrong about what years the Mustang had IRS; it was only on the 99-01 and 03-04 Cobras.

Definately like the new front design language, but it definately looks just like a joining of Aston and Mitsu appearances.

I doubt the headlights will look like the renderings on page 1. I agree that it was likely pulled from the top half of the Fusion.

I support IRS in the 'Stang. I know the faithful may bark, or shall I say WILL bark, but an IRS in a Mustang GT and 302 and so forth, will make a huge difference. Look at how many road test professionals have said that "if the handling was modern, this would have won". I truly believe that it'll be a world-beater, with a modern suspension.

The only discernible disadvantage may be at the drag strip. Yes, the car earns a lot of its reputation there - but don't tell me that a solution can't be cooked up, by the aftermarket. Shelby & Roush will figure it out, if Ford can't.

Multiple articles say the Mustang will retain its round headlights so that's good. And as for IRS, there are Cobras in the 9s that still have their IRS so it's really not that big of a deal in terms of drag racing.

The Fusion front end with round headlights could be cool if done right.

Add to it some of those lines, with the sloping roof line, and some fleared fenders on the rear would be cool.

The new fusion is only an ecoboost V6 and manual transmission way from being epic

It would eat too much on the Taurus SHO. Granted, they have different markets, but I just can't see it happening. You're more likely to see a warmed over Ecoboost 4, AWD and revamped suspension as a "Sport" model (to make up for the lame-duck previous gen "Sport"). Probably no manual, but Ford has been serving up a lot of pleasant surprises lately.

That would be darn nice...but I don't see it happening yet. Maybe in a few years if things continue to go well for/with Ford.

You're probably right that a V6 EB Fusion would eat into SHO sales, but SHO sales aren't very good to begin with and the sales gained from a Fusion SHO would be much higher than the sales lost from the Taurus SHO. The Charger RT kills the SHO in sales. I test drove the SHO on a couple of different occasions and loved many aspects of it and hated a few and those few prevented me from buying one. Some of those few are: too long to fit in my garage, the rear seat legroom is too small for a full size vehicle, a little too heavy and suspension and brakes didn't live up to the engine performance. A properly tuned (suspension and brakes) Fusion SHO would address those issues.

Yeah, but we didn't get the 2002 Cobra in the US so that's why I didn't include it. The article is still wrong since it said "1994-2004" when in reality, the 94-98 Cobras did not have IRS.

I haven't owned a Ford since the early 90's and have never, ever been attached to the Mustang but 13 months into my 2012 GT and I'm hooked. Funnest car I've ever owned. I really liked my EVO X MR but I'm not sure I could go back to an EVO or STI. I believe the next generation Mustang will be my next car.

EcoBoost Engine Coming to 2015 Ford Mustang

Quote:
Spy photographers at Hooniverse spotted the rumored 2015 Ford Mustang being tested in the daylight.

The images show a current-generation Mustang, equipped with a purported new center stack and independent rear suspension setup. Previously, there were reports that the automaker is yet to decide whether it wanted an independent or solid rear suspension. However, there is a bigger chance that the upcoming model will feature an independent rear suspension, since all of Mustang’s competitors have one.

Its interior is not done yet, but it already features a tachometer with 6,500 rpm redline. It points out to the car’s design that brings to mind the past in a not-so iconic way. In relation to this, Ford’s Focus ST is redlined at 6,500 rpm. This makes the rumored car’s front-mounted intercooler to hype up the speculations that it was tested using ST’s forced-induction, 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

The 2015 Ford Mustang appears to be a revolutionary iteration of its predecessors. The car manufacturer is expected to shrink its size a bit, and it may also feature turbocharged power for the first time in three decades.

EcoBoost Engine: What You Need to Know

Prior to this, it was reported that Ford is still uncertain with the EcoBoost landing on its next Mustang. However, it is inevitable that the car will showcase the technology in the future, as pointed out by Ford’s Product Chief Derrick Kuzak last January.

It has been rumored for years that the EcoBoost engine will appear in the Mustang. In relation to this, the car manufacturer has always maintained that the technology would be commonly used throughout its lineup. Furthermore, the engine is offered in four- and six-cylinder variants in the United States.

Additionally, Ford updated its car for the 2013 model year. The automaker increased the model’s GT to 420 hp, as well as topping the Shelby GT500 at 650 hp with over 200 mph top speed.

Although it may still take a while before the 2015 Ford Mustang see the light of day, the recent spy shots confirm that the car manufacturer is heading to a new direction. There were also reports that the upcoming mule will take design cues from the Evos concept that was revealed during the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

That being said, the next-generation model is set to debut sometime in 2014, and it will feature the current model’s six- and eight-cylinder engines.
Interesting about the 6,500rpm redline. They could throw everyone a curve ball and only equip the 4-cyl Ecoboost model with an IRS and still offer the solid axle on the V8 models.
