engine starting problem, help, please!!
I live west of HR and if anyone has had this problem, let me know where you went to fix it:
Before I start explaining the problem, the battery contacts have already been cleaned off. I have a 99 OBS withg 105k mi. Ok, a few weeks ago my went to turn my car on and when I did the engine did not start, however all of my interior lights (radio, dome etc) worked and my headlights and brakes worked fine (no dimming). The starter itself did not move or turn even once, complete silence. As I turned the ignition fully, the headlights did not dim. This has lasted a few weeks with the engine working perfectly normal and then doing what I described above (at the worst possible times). My subie repair man thought it was a bad connection from the battery so he cleaned off the contacts and it worked fine for a few days before acting up again last night. My question is: 1) what the hell is wrong?!?!! 2) is it electrical with wiring issues? 3) do I need a new starter? 4) if this has happened to you, let me know what you did to fix it! Thanks, Brian

The first thing that comes to my mind is a bad switch at the clutch. It sounds like the car doesn't think the clutch is in and therefore won't start. There is a switch above the clutch pedal that closes when the clutch is in to allow the car to start. Of course, if you have an AT, disregard my post.
Keep us posted. josh |

sorry, didnt metion my car is an auto. I was advised that if I hit the starter with a hammer (lightly) the car would start, and if it did start then i need a new starter. Well, it did start and i need a new starter. Its something about the solenoids not triggering the starter motor...anyways, too complicated for me to understand, but I will be getting a new starter. Thanks for your help though.

Be sure to have your starter tested before you haul off and buy a new one. Just take it off and take it down to any good auto parts store and they will be able to test it for you.
If it's fine, I would start looking towards the solenoid or the ignition switch. Good Luck |
